coming into the game we knew we would have a tough challenge on our hands. last time we played Canterbury the game was abandoned after a serious neck injury to our point guard josh mountifield it was a close contest & we had seen their many strengths. we would have to bring our A game to come out on top.
before the start we stressed tough defense & aggressive offense we had to take it to them.
from the tip we seemed focused. a changed starting 5 for us (due to exams) came together well & gio corpuz got us off to a good start speedily getting to their hoop! Canterbury settled & let the game come to them, a spread offensive set got them some easy scores! they went on a mini scoring run & we found ourselves down 15-7 early in the quarter. but sparked from an ian marshall 3-pointer we clawed ourselves back into the game! 2 big scores from jack ryan & a tough inside hoop from tom wyatt finished the scoring for the 1st & brought us to within a point, down 19-18 after the opening 10 minutes a good start!
the 2nd quarter saw us come out the aggressor. ian marshall driving to the hoop drawing a foul & getting to the free throw line, followed by baskets from tom wyatt & mutalib 'mimo' habib (fresh off the bench) to give us a 23-19 lead ( sadly this was our only lead of the game!) Canterbury answered & erupted with a 10 point scoring run. we stopped this with 2 hoops, 1 from louis harris & the other a great outside jump shot from ollie hunt! again Canterbury answered with smart basketball plays getting inside our defense. a buzzer beating 3 pointer from jack ryan kept us in contention going into the half down 32-30! ( we had been outscored 13-12 in the 2nd period )
at the half we heard their coach going mad at them as we had got them out of their sets with some tough defense, we had them somewhat rattled & had to keep in their faces! we had played a great half we had to now step it up a gear.
the 3rd quarter started & Canterbury went on a tear, they stepped up the intensity & went on a scoring run! we called time out! they had the momentum & we weren't being aggressive enough at both ends! we attacked their hoop after the time out & got to the line but couldn't connect & found ourselves down 44-31! scores from louis harris, ian marshall & tanaka mujeri brought us closer but were answered by dagger 3 pointers from Canterbury! 2 more hoops from ian marshall made the score 49-41 to Canterbury heading into the final stanza! ( we had been outscored 17-11 in the 3rd )
we had to chase the game, up the pressure & play harder than them in the final 10 minutes!
as the 4th quarter started it looked as if we had ran out of gas! Canterbury went to their big man & he seemed to score at will (10 points in the final period alone ) we couldn't stop him & the game slipped away from us! we never gave up & kept fighting, matt sharp hit a big 3 pointer to close the gap to 10 but that was as close as we got as Canterbury ran away with the game! we were outscored 20-12 in the 4th quarter! making the final score 69-55 to Canterbury! a tough loss but hats off to a better side on the day!
