Netball 1 42 Tautons 1 10

There was a real buzz about todays game as the opposition had a reputation of being a quality college for Netball, often reaching the finals of the National Cup. They arrived for an early start on a dry afternoon.

A number of the girls recognizing some of their opponents from Regional U19 netball.

Amber was playing her first game back since her ankle injury and Hannah Carey reverted back to Defence. I asked the girls to focus and work hard on attack and defence right from the outset. The first 15mins were amazing, we blew Tautons away with our determination and desire to win, the passing was crisp and the work rate 100% - we lead at the end of 15 mins

15-2.    The play continued in a similar vein for the 2nd quarter with the scoring dropping off slightly and the score at the end of the 2nd quarter was 24-4.

It is hard to maintain the focus when winning easily and things dropped off after half time.  It was easy to understand the frustration of the Tautons coach as the girls had the netball skills to play the game but our want to win therefore we were first to the ball, and battled for everything they did not compete.

Changes were made going into the last quarter as the game was won and I wanted to see how players played in different combinations.

Final score 42-10 – excellent win

Man of the Match – Amelia Stubbs – New defensive partnership with Hannah – 10 goals conceded in 60 mins not bad.

Worthing Rugby 1stXV Regional FE 10s

A strong Worthing side travelled to Dorking RFC for what was to be an eventful day’s play. A lacklustre warm up followed by an indifferent performance and opposition break away try put paid to any chance of competing in the Cup competition come the latter stages of the competition. With plenty of disappointment in the eyes of the players it was clear that not too much needed saying and with that we moved on to the next fixture against Richmond 2s (Rich whaaart? ‘Richmond’). They were as usual abrasive in style and had a number of very dangerous athletes always putting the Worthing side under pressure, however Worthing managed to collect two scores and win comfortably against the Richmond second string side. Hereafter it was on like Donkey Kong, Worthing progressing into the second tier tournament to play Reigate and Esher.

The Reigate game was close for a short time then Worthing opened up the field with some excellent rugby scoring tries a plenty working together well as a side offloading well, creating space and finishing when the opportunity arose.

The final game against Esher was to be a tough encounter however the best was saved until last with the early Worthing lethargy being vanquished from memory and the sights of Conroy-Smith and Pitchford sprinting down the touch line replacing them.

In all a day of what might have been, a better warm up, more responsibility taken or a more direct approach during the opening moments of the day. However one tackle eventually shaped the entire day, if the Canterbury player is brought down a win was possible and that falls on every mans shoulders.

Lessons learned and better things lay ahead but for today the ‘Established Plate Winners’ title will have to do.

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 7

Both teams were in cup action this week with the 1st XI taking on South Downs in the ESFA National Cup and the 2nd XI travelling into Mid Sussex for a 2nd round County Cup tie against Thomas Bennett.

The 1st XI went into their tie with South Downs looking to learn from their previous week's reverse at the hands of Mid Kent and the result was an awesome first half display, which saw the hosts 3-0 up at the break.

The game began relatively evenly with both sides looking to play on the hallowed turf that is Worthing United??!! South Downs created the first couple of chances with their centre half just heading over from an outswinging corner being the closest. Shortly after however the home side took the lead. Alex Staines ran onto a short back pass and finished well. 1-0. This goal gave Worthing a huge amount of confidence and the began to pass and move the ball around all areas of the pitch. Worthing quickly doubled the lead when an Ali Giammattei cross found its way to Staines who cheekily flicked the ball over the advancing South Downs goalkeeper. 2-0. The confidence and ability levels were now flowing and chances were coming thick and fast with Sam Mannings, George Dowell, Jordan Clark, Luke Jearum and Staines all having good chances to extend the home sides lead. Thirty minutes had only just passed when Worthing added a third and in hindsight killed the game off. Staines again completed his hat trick with another low excellent finish. 3-0. More chances came with centre half Andy Heward having the best opening, when his free header went wide of the far post. Half time 3-0.

All those watching had certainly had a treat in the first 45 minutes with some of the best football that has been witnessed at the College Academy. However complacency had set in and this affected the second half performance. Even with this Worthing still had numerous chances to extend the lead with Staines, Jack Boxall, another Andy Heward free header and both Sam Mannings and Jordan Clark having great efforts from free kicks all coming close. South Downs also increased their performance levels in the second period and their hard work paid off with 20 minutes to go with their left back attacking the ball at the back post and beating Kieron Gillard in the process. 3-1. Even with their poor second half showing Worthing closed out the game relatively comfortably and will now advance to the 3rd round of the National Cup.

Meanwhile the 2nd XI were continuing their excellent form with an impressive 5-3 victory away at Thomas Bennett in the 2nd round of the County Cup. It again took the lads to fall behind before performing and coming out on top as they were 2-0 down at one point. Special mention must go to striker Paul Jackson, who scored 4 of the goals in this impressive victory. The lads have again showed great character and ability to advance to the next round. Defender Alex Cole rose at the back post to finish the scoring and thus completing a very effective performance.

All in all a great week for the Football Academy, however the lads must continue to take this forward into the rest of the season and if this does happen I'm sure the results will continue to come as they have done in this last half term.

Well done to all players!!

Cheers and have a good half term,

Hallsy

worthing college V haywards heath college

away at haywards heath is always a game to look forward to. a testing game both physically & mentally. we had to be focused to get the result.
first quarter; we won the tip & set the tone for the game. we looked lively & scored at will. great drives from ollie hunt, josh mountifield, ian marshall & tom wyatt made us look good on the offensive end but our defense was slack. we outscored haywards heath 25-10 in the opening 10minutes but 10 points was too many to concede, we needed to step up our D!
second quarter; we rotated the bench & looked for a defensive spark. we again cruised in for easy scores but couldn't get consecutive stops! baskets from matt sharp, ollie hunt & ian marshall effectively put the game away as again we out scored haywards heath. this time 17-10 making the score at the half 42-20
at the half we spoke about locking up on defense. trying to hold haywards heath to less than 10 points in the next quarter!
third quarter; intensity raised & haywards heath found it tougher to get their shots off. again we rotated players off the bench & everybody contributed! tough scores from stuart nayer & ollie hunt ( including a break away 2-handed dunk ) kept the scoreboard ticking over! our defense was better & we held haywards heath to 7 points in the 3rd, scoring 20 points ourselves ballooning the score to 62-27 heading into the final stanza
fourth quarter; the win was in the bag but we needed to stay focused at both ends. we again ran the floor well for more easy scores! again we scored 20 points in the quarter & did a decent job on the other end holding haywards heath to another 10 points! final score 82-37 worthing college win!

Worthing College Netball 2nd Team V Taunton

Worthing College Netball 2nd Team started their match against Taunton well with a 13 – 0 lead, the passing was going well and the defending and the girls put a nice pace into the game.

In the 2nd quarter the two Emma’s put in some impressive shooting (15 goals in this quarter) and extended the lead to 28 – 1, the defending was holding and the girls were increasing the pace of the game.  With the court being quite slippery due the huge amount of rain the night before the girls needs to ensure that they landed every pass, which they were doing.

Going into the 3rd and with some changes on the court, the girls were told not to have a Worthing Wobble as it is known when some of the dynamics of the game changes.  They kept up their impressive performance, defence still holding and the shooting still going strong the girls ended the quarter on 42 – 2.

Last quarter and the main aim was to keep the defence and passing going strong, it almost worked and the defence stayed strong but some of the passing went a bit off and there was quite a few missed passes happening.  The girls did manage to keep the impressive shooting going with another 14 goals in this quarter and the game ended on Worthing winning 56 – 5.

Well done to all the girls!

Netball 1st Team 48 v Hasting 8 BCS League

Due to the 2nd team cup game and the shortage of players, the squads were shuffled around this week with the intention of everyone getting court time.

Everyone played at least three quarters of the game and Nicky gatland (capt) played a half.

The passing was strong and direct but on occasions some movement was not as good with people not driving onto the ball.

From the beginning it was clear we were a stronger team and took the opportunity for players to try different positions apart from Georgia and Hannah but they took the challenge well and were very good.  Georgia's shooting was extremely accurate and every member of the defence went in for all the rebounds.

Around and into the 'D' the passing was excellent, just needed to rememeber to stay top and sides. Even though it was an easy match, everyone concentrated and there were very few silly passes and hardly any unnecessary penalties and free passes given.  Hastings were fairly aggressive and began to answer back but again the team stayed focused.

Those who don’t normally play with the 1st team players stepped up their game and worked really hard, Well done everyone

Worthing Netball 2 62 Collyers 2 8 Sussex K/O Cup

The netball team and rugby squad travelled to Collyers for two cup games, each hoping to progress to the next round.  The netballers arrived early and spent a pleasant half hour team bonding in Horsham Park.

The team of Emma Luke, Emma Mounford, Pippa Salt, Lizzie Northeast, Caitlin Kay, Ria Knight, Amelia Stubbs and Ellie Rees were looking forward to the occasion. They started slowly and despite their clear ability struggled in the first 5 mins to dominate the opposition, however by quarter time it was clear there was only going to be one winner. They took the game away from the opposition with some outstanding circle play and shooting from Emma L and Emma M and the defensive partnership of Amelia Stubbs and Ria Knight stood firm.

Some of the netball played was outstanding and despite the easy win, the players never rested on their laurels, worked hard and respected their opposition right to the final whistle. In the final quarter the shooting partnership of mounty and lukey scored 25 goals – outstanding.

Man of the Match – Emma Mountfield

Mens Hockey Cup 14.10.09 Worthing 5 Central Sussex 2

An all round solid display, with some key players missing The Academy squad showed strength in depth. The first half saw Worthing going in the half time break all level ,the solitary goal being scored by Alex Mason, a very scrappy first half had to be improved if we were to get anything out of the game. Second half saw Worthing coming out with all guns blazing, an absolute "rocket "of a goal from Luke Helmer, thundered it onto the goal in off the underside of the crossbar, a peach of a strike, it was going into the goal or car park, from then on Worthing showed composure and maturity and never looked to be anything other than winners, with Charles McCall, Jo Groom and finally James Cooke adding their names to the score sheet. A very professional second half, well done to all

Worthing 2nds 15 v BHASVIC 15

A day of nearly and what might have been was the end discussion within the Worthing camp after a fast and hard fought match between two evenly pitched sides.

The heavy weight visitors more substantial in size although less organised in structure, more than a match for the developing Worthing 2nd XV. Worthing started well scoring a penalty within the fist minute. The game was a turgid affair in the opening quarter with both teams striving for but not achieving dominance.

Both sides conceding turn overs at the break down, with Worthing gaining the benefit at the line out with good work by the lifting pods and excellent work by Wigzell with pin point darts.

Walsh was running well from the base of the scrum and every one of the bare 15 was playing his part in a tough encounter at the field of dreams. Worthing hung on for long periods with poor decision making and the penalty count stopping further scores. White made a last ditch 7point saver as did Conroy-Smith which maintained parity throughout the remainder of the half. By half time it was a 3-3 festival of not quite and if only but the 2nd period would dispel mediocrity from the preceding, as mediocrity has no mates and was no longer welcome.

Worthing hit hard in the second half scoring 2 very well worked trys, one from Hubbard going from 40m and one from Luke from 30m with Jordan converting one. Unfortunately the size of the squad came put the win in doubt as injuries took their toll. Firstly Luke’s thumb became an issue reducing lineout options and then Arnold was forced from the field with a hyper extended elbow. Down to 14 it was bring on the whistle time as the Worthing side had little left in the tank.

BHASVIC played some excellent attacking rugby from all parts, this coupled with an ever weakening defence lead to two trys for the visitors. The last of which on the 15m line provided a kick effectively fro the match, this spooned wide and Worthing lived to fight another day. With the final whistle blown, all players content with a tough contested match, Worthing probably the happier as Big Mo was on the visitors side at the end and 15-15 seeming a solid result.

Man points a plenty gained by all however a few sessions on the brain box may have supplement endeavour to the tune of a win. Hubbard showed good leadership in defence and distributed well, Keith was more of a threat, the front row scrumaged well, Wigzell Smart and Luke all contributing around the field. Birch and Arnold in the row were excellent at the line out and added value around the pitch while the back row worked well, White and Cook growing ever more effective and Walsh leading from the front at all times. The mid field was stifled for much of the day but defended more cohesively towards the end and Jordan and Fitzgerald complimented each other well. The back three was solid with Newson having his best game yet and Conroy-Smith running well when the opportunity arose. Hoddy in his first game deputised well on the wing and also on the flank later in the game a good first days work well done.

Video analysis is for another day, right now rest up and recover from a bruising encounter. Good effort chaps.

Worthing College 41 v Collyers 8 (A)

Round 3 of the Daily Mail saw Worthing travel to Horsham with 5 changes to the side that took the field in the previous round.

Worthing v Collyers is always a very competitive fixture and today would prove no different. From the Kick off Worthing gathered well and made territory which would lead to an early score that would go unconverted. Collyers countered well and dominated the next period of the game which led to a string of penalties from Worthing. Worthing rallied and responded well and went in at half time 12-3 up.

Collyers continued to challenge well at the breakdown after half time but Worthing were to up their game as they refocused at half time.

Worthing had the majority of second half territory and possession and this pressure would lead to some well worked scores.

Most pleasing for Worthing was that they counter attacked well with the back three constantly a threat but the collective performance of the forwards was impressive. The catch and drive was an increasing threat and the tight interplay between the front eight is developing nicely.

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 6

After donning our lycra last week in the spinning studio both teams were back in action with home matches, which produced a mixed set of results with the 1st XI losing out to a strong Mid Kent outfit and the 2nd XI continuing their hot streak of form with a win against Kingston.

The 1st XI took to the Arundel pitch high in confidence after a very mature performance last time out. Worthing's opponents were a strong and hard tackling Mid Kent side who took the game to the home side early on and forced keeper Kieron Gillard into a couple of fine saves. It took time for the hosts to get into the game but when they did they looked to do it in their free flowing football style with Ben Standing being the main catalyst. It was Standing's impressive run and cross, which just evaded Sam Mannings at the back post and gave Worthing one of their main chances of the half. Another chance came when striker Chris Churchill unleased a thunderbolt of a strike, which was heading goalwards but unfortunately for Worthing hit the advancing defender and away from goal.

The game was seemingly heading for a level scoreline at the break, but the visitors were to break the deadlock with the last kick of the first half. A Mid Kent corner was failed to be cleared and this led to the ball being played across the box for the Mid Kent centre half to take full advantage of. 1-0.

Worthing knew that the needed to play the ball in more advanced areas to create more chances in the second period, but they couldn't have asked for a worse start as Mid Kent doubled their lead. Another cross was not dealt with and this led to the Mid Kent striker tapping in after following up from a Gillard save. 2-0.

Worthing responded well to this by playing all the passing football and switching the play from left to right at ease. Unfortunately for the hosts they were not able to find the final ball, which their play deserved. The one golden chance to get back into the game came when the ball fell kindly to the in form Alex Staines in the box, however the ball was struck high and over the opposition bar.

The final nail in the coffin came with 5 minutes to go. Another cross was not stopped and even though it looked as if the Mid Kent number 10 had put the ball in with his hand, the goal stood. 3-0.

All in all the lads worked hard, but at times they needed to play the ball forward more quickly and not lose the ball in one areas, but we are still heading in the right direction.

The 2nd XI were back in league action and recorded their second win in the league against a physical Kingston team. The 2nd XI won 3-2 with a Paul Jackson brace and a Zaki Rahman free kick on the scoresheet. Another excellent performance by the lads against a technically sound side and both Danny and Dave are pleased with the progress of both sides. So onwards and upwards to all of you!!

Cheers,

Hallsy

1st quarter; in a slow opening period we came out on top 9-8! a low scoring affair as both teams struggled to find their shooting touch
2nd quarter; our defence stepped up & held bexhill to a single basket in ten minutes! we still could find our scoring form & were up 18-10 at halftime. the game was very sloppy & both teams were playing scrappy defence making scoring very tough.

Worthing College Women's football 6 v Bexhill College 1

Worthing started their ESFA cup run with a convincing 6-1 win over Bexhill. Missing their captain Megan Priest and goalkeeper Lauren Binfield Worthing still managed to control the game and take the chances they created.

Chloe Debaes scored a first half hat trick to put Worthing well in command at 3-0 up after 45 minutes. During the first half Worthing’s re-jigged defence were hardly troubled at all with Jordan Lucas and Megan Cave dominating in the centre and Vicki Cornelius and Chloe Lamley giving good support in the wide areas. As the half worn on Cornelius became more adventurous linking with Danielle Lane causing Bexhill problems down the right hand side.

After bringing Debaes off at half time and moving Lane central the 2nd half started in much the same way as the 1st . Worthing well in control and creating more chances than their visitors. Bexhill got back into the game after a bit of sloppy defending which briefly lifted the tempo of their game when they won several corners in a row. But Lane quickly killed the game off with her 1st and Worthing 4th. She added 2 more goals to her and Worthing’s tally in the last 15 minutes.

Player of the Match – Vicki Cornelius – overlapping from full back causing Bexhill lots of trouble as well as a solid defending at the back.

Goal scorers – Chloe Debaes x 3, Danielle Lane x 3

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 4

Both Football Academy sides came into Week 4 of the Academy programme full of confidence after last week's performances. The 1st XI travelled to Woking for a tricky away fixture in the ECFA League, whilst the 2nd Team visited Crawley school St Wilfrids for a County Cup First Round tie.

The 1st XI knew they were in for a tough game, but spirits were lifted after arriving at the very impressive Knaphill stadium, where the pitch was flat and wide, which would suit Worthing's style of play. The game began at a very fast pace with possession surrendered easily, with both teams being found guilty. Worthing were the first to settle and put in a very mature first half performance by not chasing after the ball and forcing their opponents to play the ball long. Chances were few and far between in the first half, however Worthing created the clearest openings. A fantastic run by George Dowell was only thwarted by an outstretched arm from the home goalkeeper. Wideman Ben Standing was causing all sorts of trouble down the right and his persistence was almost rewarded when after robbing the full back, a slight deflection on his cross ensured that the ball did not reach an inform Alex Staines, but instead the home goalkeeper's grateful hands. Worthing continued to frustrate their Surrey opponents and their work ethic was there for all to see for the opening goal. Ben Standing closed down the centre half and the ball fell kindly to Staines, who produced an accomplished finish. 1-0. Worthing continued this level of performance until the half and definitely deserved their lead at the break.

Worthing knew that their performance levels needed to be the same for the second half as Woking came out of the blocks fast and created a couple of half chances, however Worthing weathered the storm and at times looked comfortable. The turning point of the game came half way through the second half. A routine Woking corner was taken by keeper Kieron Gillard only for the ball to slip out of his grasp on his return to the ground. 1-1. This seemed to wake up Woking a for a ten minute spell they dominated for the first time in the game, however the back four of George Dowell, Andy Heward, Jack Boxall and Ali Giammattei stood firm and put in an excellent performance throughout the 90 minutes keeping the home team at bay. As the game drew to a close the closest Worthing came to winning the game was from a Sam Mannings right foot effort, which hit the outside netting. Full time score 1-1.

All in all a great point away from home and in the first half I have seen that the players are beginning to take responsibility for their own game as they put in a very mature and measured performance. Apart from the back four Ben Standing and Alex Staines impressed, whilst a special mention to skipper Luke Jearum, who after throwing up in the warm up managed to get through the 90 minutes. Well done all!!

The 2nd XI booked their place in the 2nd round of the county cup after coming from behind against St Wilfrids. Worthing were 2-0 down with one coming from the spot and the other a slide rule pass that was not intercepted. However the excellent team spirit again showed through and the difference was the introduction of Ash Beaken as a make shift striker, who put in a very committed performance. Goals came from Zaki Rahman, Tom Taylor, Paul Jackson and Phil Charman to make the final result 4-2 to the visitors. Again a good performance and result from the 2nd XI, however the team need to stop conceding goals before they begin to play, otherwise they may not get the positive results their hard work deserves, especially against the better sides.

Finally I look forward to seeing you all at the Sponsored Walk on Friday!!!

Cheers,

Hallsy

worthing college V kingston college

we arrived in kingston ready to redeem ourselves after last weeks loss! we were in for another tough test as kingston college are a very good side. we went through our pre game warm ups & were ready for the tip!
from the start of the game we seemed to be more focused than last week! we traded baskets for the opening minutes of the 1st quarter but then stepped it up on the back of an ian marshall 3 pointer to lead 14-7. kingston fought back but at the end of the quarter we were ahead 14-13!
between quarters we spoke about pushing the ball & locking up on the defensive end. we made some subs & took the floor.
the 2nd quarter started & kingston looked the aggressor. we seemed to quickly run out of steam! kingston took a slender lead 28-23 until back to back baskets from jack ryan leveed the score. again kingston surged & took the lead, we had let our tempo drop & had no energy! we rotated players off the bench but again couldn't find a spark! at half time we trailed 34-29! we had been outscored 21-15 in the 2nd quarter.
at the half we spoke about stepping up as we had not played well or hard enough at either end! we lacked poise & passion & had to wake up to get back in this game.
as the 3rd quarter started we picked up the pace. we ran the floor & pushed the ball for easy scores. we looked like a different team & fought our way back into the game! sparked by ian marshall's play (12 points in the quarter) & louis harris' defending we attacked & took the lead. only to see kingston connect on 2 big 3 pointers to tie the game at 50 after 3 quarters!
going into the final stanza we spoke about the game coming down to who wanted it more! with the score tied it was a 10 minute game! we had the momentum & needed to take the game to them.
we opened the scoring in the 4th quarter, another basket from ian marshall but kingston answered. we then rallied & took a slender lead at 58-55 only to see another big 3 pointer made from kingston! again ian marshall got inside & scored giving us a 1 point advantage with less than a minute to play!  60-59! timeout kingston.. we had to get a stop & the game would be ours! defense was needed & cool heads! from the time out kingston managed to score giving them a 1 point lead 61-60! 15 seconds left! time out worthing! we drew up a play for ian marshall to get a shot we had enough time to take the last shot! out of the time out we got pressured into an early shot & even had a rebound chance that popped off the rim! kingston grabbed the rebound & we fouled to stop the clock with 5 seconds remaining! 2 free throws for kingston.. the first shot was missed, we needed to get the rebound & somehow get a shot! the 2nd shot missed & we came up with the ball... with 43 seconds left ian marshall had the ball in his hands & surged towards kingston's basket, he had to force up a prayer from way outside the 3 point line only to see his shot bounce off the rim as the final buzzer sounded! a great effort but we came up short! kingston win 61-60 in a hard fought game! both teams shook hands & game one another loud shouts. we had been very unlucky not to get the win & find ourselves 0-2 on the season! we must again get better before next week.
