Worthing 2ndXV 25 Central Sussex 0

Worthing academy 2nd XV waited for their opponents until 2.40pm on a graying afternoon in late September and finally made a 3pm start.

The game was error strewn in the opening periods and players were trying to get into the game and make their mark on proceedings. Then 4mins in the ball was expertly won by Arnold at the front of the line and the ball eventually made its way across to Bone hitting the line at pace in the 15 channel. He beat 3players including 1 substantial fend then carried two players over the line andthe official eventually gave the score. The kick was unsuccessful.

The following minutes were less than exciting with further scrappy phases being played out.

Worthing were beginning to dominate the scrum and line out with Birch and Arnold doing most of the damage to the Central Sussex ball.

Hatchard was having the game of is life making numerous tackles and providing the team with good turnover ball. Walker was doing a good job of winning the opposition scrum ball along with his partners in crime Wigzell and Smart.

At this stage the rucking from the Worthing side was beginning to be a real difference between the sides with the extra organization of the home side showing through. Central Sussex put a plenty of pressure on the Worthing line for a short period of time towards the end of the  half before another Bone run relieved the pressure.

At this stage of the game the Worthing forwards were out shining their back teammates with the backs not using the ball to the best their capability or making the best decisions as a result it kept the visitors in touch at only 5-0 down.

Asolid Wilson clearance kick managed to reduce the pressure on from the Worthing22m. This was chased up by the impressive Bone who jumped high into the failing autumnal light and beat the Central fullback to the ball.  Quick support from Arnold and the effective Birch took the game into the Central 22m where Birch received a short arm to the snoz, whereupon it morphed into a nose of a 30yr pro boxer (one that hadn’t won many fights and lost most by knock out). He came off for blood and Anderson moved to wing with the energetic P White moving to the back row.

The new look forward pack then had Two backs in it as both P White and Newson were in the Lock and Flank positions, giving height if not weight to the young pack.

However in the second half Worthing started to outstretch their opponents with some patches of very tidy play.

While still running laterally across the pitch far too often, Hart did manage to feed Bone who traveled 60m beating 3 players without being touched. As a back three player that used to run reasonably well I can tell you that the performance of the Worthing 15 was exceptional in every facet. Bone ran with balance and poise(ironic seeing as he so regularly falls over his own feet) to score two tries on the day and play a part in another.

Cook manned up as he continued to play with an arm injury and was rewarded by scoring after some very good forwards work taking him to 2 trys from 2 games.

The best team try of the day was arguably scored by debutant Anderson after good work from N White and a delicious pass from man of the match Bone.

The  final try came from more good Worthing work a great pass from Walker put N White in for the score.

In summation lots of positives for the team expertly lead by the captain Rogers(playing through illness- man points), excellent scrummaging by Wigzell, Walker and Smart all of whom contributed around the field and Walker’s darts were simply scrumptious throughout.

The second row players Birch, Arnold and Newson provided good line out ball all game and the back row players put the opposition under pressure all day. Hatchard was quick over the ball, Cook was industrious, Rogers carried well and back row debutant P White was brilliant considering his lack of experience he also made the biggest hit of the day oooohhh booomb!

Parker was active and a handful when on the ball, Keith got the backs moving, Wilson was energetic and a good link player. Hart put width on the ball and cut good lines, while the back three were all dangerous and scored 4 tries between them.(Bone 2, N White, Anderson)

Lots to work on but a good win against a big and talented side. Well done chaps.

Worthing College IXV 54 v Steyning IXV 3 (A)

Worthing College started their Daily Mail Cup season with a convincing victory away at local rivals Steyning.

IXV debuts were handed to 8 players and the team saw a total of 11 changes from the BCS side of last week.

Worthing were dominant from the whistle with number 8 and captain Matt Sercombe scoring a 25 minute first half hat trick.

Jack Roberts at Blind Side had a very physical game and offered something very different to the normal Worthing College high tempo and free flowing game. The newly formed Back Row of Roberts, Laszlow and Sercombe worked effectively in both attack and defence.

At half time injuries to Steyning forwards required the game to go to uncontested scrums. This disrupted Worthing's momentum and coupled with some interesting refereeing broke up the game to a point where little of the first half shape and focus remained. Changes were made to the. Worthing side to ensure all players in the match day squad would have a chance to take the field. The whistle was blown early shortly after the 50 differential was reached.

Worthing will reflect on the game positively but will also recognise the importance of working in units and to maintain focus so as scoring opportunities are maximised.

Man of the Match - Matt Sercombe

Scorers - Sercombe 3, Roberts 2, Double 1 (7 conversions), Claire 1 and Harcus 1

Netball 1st Team

South Downs arrived early and keen to play and looking the part in their matching kit.

Worthing had warmed up well and it became apparent very early on that this was going to be a one sided game.  Georgia Williams and Hannah Carey have formed a very good partnership in attack and with Lizzi Northeast and Nicky Gatland controlling the centre court, Worthing took an early lead to end the first quarter 17 -1. The 2nd quarter was poor with Worthing losing their concentration and getting frustrated at some umpiring decisions and we ended the quarter 29-7.

Several changes were made to enable the whole squad to play and for me to see how players reacted to being in the 1st team. South Down made several swops between the teams however Worthing continued their domination, with the subs working hard. The game ended with a 68-15 win to Worthing.

Barton Peveril next week will prove much stiffer opposition girls be warned !

Worthing College 2nd Netball Team V Southdowns

Southdowns College arrived with a team that consisted of 4 Netballers and 3 Footballers, but the girls were in good spirits and ready to play.  The 1st quarter ended on Worthing winning 14 – 1, so with a quick team talk we decided that Worthing needed to work on their passing and movement on the court.  This went well and we continued good form and ended the 2nd quarter on 29 – 1, defence was working well for the team as Southdowns did not manage to get anything on the scoreboard.  So into the 3rd quarter with a few team changes, which somehow always slightly unbalances the team Worthing went straight back into the attack and with Amy moving to Goal Attack to work with Emma on the shooting we managed to keep the score going and ended on 40 – 3 to Worthing.  The last quarter and to gives the girls something more to work for I gave them a challenge (this worked well last season).  I told them I wanted at least 12 points this quarter and at the same time they were not to let their defence or passing let them down.  The girls succeeded and finished the 4th quarter 54 – 3 to Worthing and nice 14 points gained.  Well done ladies!!

Women's Football match report

SEEVIC 3-5 Worthing

Worthing travelled to SEEVIC with both team having a 100% record. After a poor start from both side and the ball being given away sloppily in the middle of midfield on a number of occasions, Worthing took the lead with after a moment of quality by Chloe Debaes when she beat the defender got a shot away which the SEEVIC keeper could  only parry into the path of the unmarked Danielle Lane. 1-0 Worthing. Worthing continued to press forward and create chances. SEEVIC still looked dangerous on the counter with their number 10 causing problems at the back. Lauren Binfield making a very impressive save from a corner in this period. Another SEEVIC break away down the right brought the equaliser as their forward cut in and smashed the ball into the bottom corner leaving Binfield with no chance. 1-1. Back came Worthing with a number of corners in a row and a number of efforts on the SEEVIC goal. After a prolonged period of pressure Worthing finally got the goal they deserved from another corner to the back post Which Megan Priest headed home from 3 yards out. 2-1 Worthing. More sloppy defending allowed SEEVIC to get back into the game for a second time this time on the left and the ball was played along the 6 yard line for a simple tap in at the far post. 2-2. In the dying minutes of the half Worthing took the lead they deserved at half time with another corner to the back post for again Megan Priest to nod home. 3-2 Worthing Half Time.

After the change around the game took much the same pattern with Worthing controlling the game and SEEVIC looking dangerous on the break. For the third time in the game SEEVIC brought themselves level with a well taken goal after the forward cut in from the left and fired the ball past Binfield. This signalled SEEVIC’s best period of the game when they took control for 25 minutes. They were winning every 1st and 2nd ball but were never creating any real chances. With 15 minutes left and against the run of play Chloe Debaes put Worthing ahead with a great goal beating two defenders before firing the ball into the top corner. 4-3 Worthing. This seemed to deflate SEEVIC allowing Worthing to once again take control and put the game beyond the reach of SEEVIC after great work from Vicki Cornelius down the right and a very good cross led to Gemma Stanley putting the ball in at the far post to kill the game off 5-3 to Worthing.

Player of the match: Megan Priest for marking SEEVIC’s best player out of the game and scoring 2 goals herself from centre back.

Rugby 2ndXV v Brockenhurst

A new look 2ndXV made their way to the New Forest in good spirits have had a number of very good training sessions. Ultimately the older, larger, more experienced side won through, although the Brockenhurstians were run very close by the younger inexperienced side from the south coast.

The early encounters went the way of the home side and Worthing were 3-0 down after only 1min following a penalty being awarded just left of the posts which was well converted by the home no 10.

Following this Worthing tried to piece together phases stretching the home side across the pitch, although the lack of quality first phase ball from scrum or line out scuppered the advances.

The Worthing back row was standing out against the stronger opposition players with Laszlow and Roberts turning ball over and creating a high tackle count. Mills was harrying the opposition 9 and turning over ball on more than one occasion. Unfortunately the midfield was not firing on offence but was making a solid defensive effort, this until halfway through the 1st half where a 5 minute period of good attacking play saw Bone make two very good runs down the right wing the second of which he linked well with Hills and a delicious left handed reverse offload put Cook in for the score.

Worthing went well in the early stages of the 2nd half and made a number of challenges on the Brockenhurst 22m line finally after good continuity skills and fast ruck ball Clair was put over for a debatable touch down by a very good pass from Hart.

With all substitutes used Worthing tried manfully to hang on to their 10-8 lead, however, a lack of fitness and subsequent poor tactical execution lead to 2 more very good tries for the home side.

In conclusion there were more positives than negatives, all players showing skills and qualities of 1st Xv standard. However as with any new side at the start of a new season there were a large portion of mistakes which ultimately could have made the overall difference between two closely matched sides, the good news is they will be playing the return leg at Worthing towards the end of October.

A number of these 2nd XV players will be involved with the first team in the Daily Mail game next week and I believe they will do themselves justice and do the college proud.

Netball 1st

Worthing College 1 25 Peter Symonds 1 15

The decision to play in the Hampshire League looks like being the right one. Peter Symonds proved the toughest opponents Worthing have faced in a long time and they got off to a shaky start conceding the first two goals. The team were unsettled having lost Amber O’Brien to a fractured ankle and this meant moving Hanna Carey into GS, when she had started the season as GK, a big ask.

As time went on, we started to improve our passing and settle more and some excellent shooting from Hannah helped the situation, we went in at quarter time up by 5. The game was littered with some silly mistakes and poor passes, then some great moments of play and defending.  We never looked we were going to lose however never had a big league, a strange feeling for a team that were used to beating local opposition easily.

Amelia Stubbs came on at half time and had an excellent debut, taking a great interception within 30 seconds of her debut. A very promising player.

Lots to work on, but Hannah deputized extremely well for Amber.

Well done girls

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 3

It turned out to be six of the best for the 1st XI this week as they romped home with an impressive second half display and the 2nd XI kept up their decent start to the season drawing in a six goal thriller!

After having last week off the 1st XI knew that they needed to get their season up and running against new opposition in the form of Sandwich Technology School from Kent. In their first home game of the season Worthing had no excuses as their home this year is Arundel FC, where the pitch is flat and large, which will hopefully suit Worthing's passing game. The light drizzle also helped proceedings with the ball fizzing around at pace. Worthing came into the game after a great week of training and with a new 4-3-3/4-5-1 formation felt confident in each other and their abilities. The game however started very evenly with both teams trying to play attractive football. Both teams had chances and Worthing had Kieron Gillard and a post to thank for keeping the scorline level. At the other end Sam Mannings from a counter attack and the forgotten man Alex Staines both had great chances to put Worthing 1 up. The possible turning point of the game just before half time. A Sandwich corner was half cleared and the ball was played back into the area and Gillard seemed to punch the ball back into the danger area and onto the head of the Sandwich number 10 to finish, however the goal was ruled out for a foul on Gillard. Half Time 0-0.

Worthing had a couple of areas to work on for the second half, one of which was to push up the pitch, especially in midfield and this was shown for the first goal. Luke Jearum broke into the area and squared the ball to midfield partner Jordan Clark to break the deadlock. 1-0. This seemed to breathe life into Worthing and they were now extremely confident on the ball. The second goal was not far away and the scorer was Alex Staines, who was working hard as the high point of the Worthing attack and he finished coolly. 2-0. Worthing were really on top now and this was typified by the third. Holding midfield player Jack Carey ran ahead of the attack and was found excellently and finshed with aplomb into the bottom corner. 3-0. Worthing's opponents were now beginning to get on each others backs and this just lead to more opportunities, which were taken. Luke Jearum got in on the act to make it 4-0. Alex Staines scored a well deserved second. 5-0. Skipper Jearum rounded off the scoring with another cool finish to make it 6-0.

At times Worthing played some breathtaking football and created numerous opportunities, which could have been taken if the boys were not trying to walk the ball into the net Arsenal stylie. A prime example of this was another Luke Jearum effort, which was lobbed over the keeper only to hit the bar. Great move.

Meanwhile the 2nd XI were playing their first home game at their new home Worthing United against Amersham and Wycombe. Coach Danny Cullip was again "very impressed" with the teams attitude and desire to get back into the game after coming from 2-0 down and 3-2 down. Worthing's goals came from 2 stonewall penalties, which were converted by Phil Charman and strike partner Paul Jackson also got in on the act with a goal to cap an excellent personal performance. Cullip again praised the team by saying "the boys again did well today. They showed great spirit to come back from 2 down and again created opportunities to win the game. The lads are really developing and beginning to develop as players already, which is a very good sign."

So all in all a good week for the Football Academy and hopefully this will be a stepping stone for all Academy members to develop further as footballers for the rest of the season.

Cheers,

Hallsy

Worthing College IXV 28 v SEEVIC IXV 26 (A)

Worthing travelled to Southend RFC for the first league fixture of the season full of confidence after a good pre season which included a strong showing against Worthing RFC IIXV.

Worthing started the game strongly and had the major share of possession and territory which led to a score for Greg Bush and a penalty for Jack Metters.

SEEVIC responded well to this pressure and played some solid attacking rugby which forced Worthing to concede a number of kickable penalties and with 5 minutes to go before half time SERVIC led 12-8. Worthing then created a scoring opportunity which was excellently finished by Stephen Brown. Half time Worthing led by 1 point.

The second half was dogged by injuries and somewhat questionable decisions from the ref. This led to a very scrappy half which bred frustration for both sides. In the end the difference between the two sides was the Worthing back three with Joss Lee, Bobby Conroy-Smith and Chris Double all crossing for well worked scores. Worthing conceeded two tries in the second half which due to poor defense allowed them to be easily converted.

So a win but a very scrappy start to the season for the IXV in the BCS Elite League with many things to work on at training.

basketball match report 23/9/09

worthing college V uxbridge college

our first game of the season tipped off this afternoon at the worthing leisure centre. a tough, tall, athletic uxbridge college were in town for todays match up. after watching them warm up i knew we were in for a good game & would have our hands full in our first test!
we won the opening tap & started well with a 3-pointer from louis harris followed by a drive from ian marshall giving us an early 5-0 lead! but uxbridge found their feet & went on a scoring run taking the score to 14-5! we called for time out to settle down. uxbridge were trying to intimidate our ball handlers & speed us up forcing us into silly mistakes & it was working! we were rattled by their pressure so we needed to relax & slow down. after the time out we looked a little better, getting scores from ian marshall, josh mountifield & tom wyatt closing the point spread. a 3-pointer from richard bell & a lay in from jack ryan ended the 1st quarter with us trailing by 2 points 18-16!
between quarters we spoke about taking care of the ball as we had turned it over far too many times practically handing uxbridge easy scores. we changed up the defense in to a 2-3 zone!
again we scored the first basket of the quarter, ollie hunt with 2 free throws fresh off our bench. another lay in from jack ryan gave us a 20-18 lead. our change of defense was working but for the majority of the 2nd quarter both teams traded scores! 5 quick points for lucy uncles gave us a slender advantage but uxbridge answered again going on a scoring run. 3-pointers from richard bell & matt sharp & free throws from tom wyatt ended the 1st half (both teams had scored 24 points a piece in the 2nd quarter) so the score at halftime was 42-40 to uxbridge!
at halftime we talked about intensity as it felt like we hadn't got out of 1st gear! our body language was bad, heads down shoulders slumped like we had already lost & it was only a 2 point game. we weren't doing anything well we needed to step it up & take the game to them. we had a loud team shout & took the floor for the 2nd half
the 3rd quarter started & for the opening minutes both teams again traded baskets! uxbridge then stepped it up a gear & really upped the tempo. they closed us down defensively & made it tough for us to score! offensively they found easy routes to the hoop! we had no answer. to make things worse, lucy uncles twisted her ankle & had to leave the game! i rotated players in & out but we couldn't find a spark finding ourselves trailing by 10 points at the end of the 3rd! 62-52 uxbridge had outscored  us 20-12 in the period!
going in to the 4th & final quarter we tried to get pumped up & find some energy! we were playing very badly & couldn't get going at either end of the floor! it was "now or never time' & we had to step up if we wanted to get back into the game!
the 4th quarter started & we had a mini run to bring us back. scores from louis harris, memo habib, & ian marshall got us within touching distance at 66-61. but again uxbridge answered back & weathered the storm. both teams traded scores & the minutes ticked away! time out! we changed the defense into a full-court press. we needed urgency & pressure on defense to get the ball back & score! uxbridge handled it well & kept a cool head staying in front. baskets from richard bell & louis harris concluded our scoring & we came up short! the final quarter was close (uxbridge outscored us 20-19 in the period.) the damage was done in the third quarter when we were held to only 12 points. the final score was 82-71 to uxbridge! a disappointing first game as we didn't really get going, we had played a disjointed game. we weren't all on the same page & have a lot of work to do before our next match.
scorers;
memo habib- 2 points
ollie hunt- 3 points

jack ryan- 4 points
josh mountifield- 4 points

Netball 2nd Team Report

Worthing College 2nd Netball Team V Peter Symonds - a very close and even match from both teams.  The 1st quarter ended on only 4 – 4 we then realised that we were in for a close match.  The girls worked hard defending as well working to get the passing under control.  Going into the 2nd quarter the girls settled into the game more and began passing more across the court, the quarter ending on Worthing College winning 9 – 8.  Starting the 3rd the girls had to keep the pressure on with their defending and passing, they managed to keep Peter Symonds working hard and ended the 3rd quarter Worthing winning 12 – 11.  With a quick change of two players into the 4th quarter the game became very quick and both sides giving a lot of turnovers, Worthing College did not manage to keep the pressure on in the last few seconds of the game and we lost 13 – 14 to Peter Symonds who managed to get the winning shot in the last 15 seconds of the game.

Peter Symonds named Elouise O’Connor-Wright as Player of the Match.

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 2

This week saw the first team having no fixture so they were left to contemplate their poor performance in training whilst the second team took centre stage by travelling to Surrey to face a very competitive John Ruskin side. The seconds have shown a great desire to learn and develop since the Academy has begun and they were in bouyant mood after hitting four past their hapless Thames Valley opponents the week before. Coach Danny Cullip prepared the team extremely well and the game's early exchanges were fairly even with Worthing's defence holding a good high line to catch their opponents offside on numerous occasions. However later on in the game this tactic was to be their undoing.

The first chance of the game fell to winger Zaki Rahman, who turned in the box on his less favoured right foot, but still managed to force a save from the home goalie. From this point Worthing began to dominate possession and territory, which led to what some might say the crucial point in the game. Striker Phil Charman, who had been terrorising the home defence with partner Paul Jackson broke free into the box only to be cynically brought down by the John Ruskin full back as he was about to shoot. All around thought this was a stonewall penalty, with Danny Cullip being heard saying "you could get 6 months for doing less than that!". However the man that counts decided that Charman was already going down and with the referee asking for the video of the game he may in hindsight feel that his decision could have been different. This injustice motivated Worthing even more with Rahman, Paul Jackson, Matt Dodd and Phil Charman all going close. As half time approached it was winger Liam O'Connor, who should have put Worthing in front, but his close range effort sailed over the bar.

At half time the boys were all confident and happy with their performance in the first half, however the first killer blow came two minutes after the interval. Andy Herrington failed to clear a through ball and the full backs were out of position and this led to the pacy John Ruskin striker going through on goal and finishing cooly above goalie James Fernandez. 1-0.

To their credit Worthing's heads did not drop and chances kept on coming with Dodd (2 shots), Rahman, Herrington (from a corner), Charman and O'Connor, who went closer again with a chip that went over the onrushing goalkeeper, but over the bar. At the other end substitute Luke Jearum, who came on for the injured Liam Dunbar made a well timed tackle to prevent John Ruskin doubling the lead.

All of the Worthing pressure finally paid off with the scorer being the excellent Matt Dodd. After being alomst decapitated Dodd picked up the ball and smashed his free kick goalwards only for it to hit the bar and bounce down. Both the assistant referee and referee agreed that the ball crossed the line, which started some over enthusiastic celebrations. 1-1.

It was there for Worthing to take the initiative and Tom Taylor tried to put Worthing in the lead, but his shot sailed over the bar. After that chance disaster struck with another through ball cutting the Worthing defence in half and the substitute striker finished with aplomb. 2-1.

Worthing were now beginning to lose their shape slightly for the first time in the game, but chances still kept coming. Matt Dodd and Paul Jackson (2 chances) had a chance to get Worthing back on level terms. Unfortunately for Worthing it was the home side who had the last laugh with the second striker mis-hitting the ball over the unlucky Fernandez. 3-1.

All in all the result may not be positive but the performance certainly was, which prompted Danny Cullip to say "I feel we were better than last week. The team spirit is really coming together and its such a shame that we didn't take more chances. In total we had 17 clear cut chances and their players and management can't believe they have come out on top! However we have to look at our defensive shape and not switch off because all our hard work has been undone today, but again I'm proud of the lads and the attitude they have shown!" So another positive performance from the second team with James Fernandez and especially Matt Dodd performing excellently.

Cheers,

Hallsy

2nd Team Netball Report

1st friendly of the season against Collyers and the girls who have been training hard in the Academy were a little nervous to start of with.  They started of with a steady pace, a bit wayward with the passing, and also had a slight problem with spacing on the court but they ended the 1st quarter with a comfortable 12 – 3 lead.  Collyers then began to start finding their feet a little and kept the Worthing girls working hard to gain more goals the 2nd quarter ending on a 19 – 6 lead.  After a half time talk and a few team changes the Worthing girls began to sort out their passing a bit more, and demonstrated a few very good set plays and extended their lead to 38 – 11 in the 3rd quarter.  Going into the 4th quarter the girls were told to work on their defence more, and the Collyers team started to improve on their defence as well and kept Worthing out of the scoring zone throughout a lot of the match.  The end result was 41 – 12 to Worthing Academy 2nd Netball Team, a good first game, well done ladies!

1st Team Netball Report

A friendly against Collyers 1st and 2nd team gave all the girls in the Netball Team a chance to show their skills in a competitive environment.

The starting 7 for the 1st  team comprised of Amber O’Brien, Georgia Williams, Lizzy Northeast, Lizzie Anderson Easey, Caitlin Kay, Hannah Carey and Bryony Short. They got off to a flying start leading 10-0 after 10 mins, concentration lapsed a little and the score at quarter time was 16-5. The second half commenced with the same pattern as the first, Worthing storming away with the first 10 mins then lapsing again with 5 to go – half time score 32 -10. Three changes were made at half time and although Worthing had a better quarter defensively, only conceding 2, we only scored 10.  A further change was made at three quarter time with Hannah Carey moving out of defence to attack and Worthing scored a further 16 to their response of 2 to win the game 58 -14. A satisfactory day, only spoilt by Amber O’Brien fracturing her ankle in training Wed night.  This leaves opportunities for others to shine – all is not lost girls.

Report:

After a motivating team talk from the captain, the game started off on a high with Worthing breaking the deadlock in just under 10 minutes. With a goal from jack Symons which all started from a great bit of individual play from Ben Chipperfield in defence. Collyers then reacted with a lucky break a great save from Connor but was unlucky not to stop the rebound. Worthing kept there heads high and proceeded to give 100% commitment into the game this paid off with a well worked bit of team play finished by Alex Mason slotting it into the net. The game proceeded with end to end action but a miss communication in defence left a man unmarked who managed to equalise for Collyers. After a break and a talk the team setup ready and motivated to win. Unfortunately a Collyers break on the goal managed to make the score line 3:2 with one of the flukiest goals ever. But Worthing kept on fighting and it paid of with an excellent bit of individual talent which saw Scott Richardson make his way though players and slot the ball past the keeper to make it 3 all. Coming into the last 5 minutes of the game and Worthing knew they had left it late but they were still looking for the win. A great bit of team play found Worthing winning a penalty corner. We knew that this was the best chance we would get to win the game. A perfectly injected ball by the captain and excellent and excellent stick work and skill at the top of the Dee by Luke Helmer left it on a plate for Charlotte White to tap it home and make it 4:3. Worthing stayed calm and played keep ball for the remaining couple of minutes to run down. Overall am very impressed with the team’s first performance and hopefully the beginning of much success.

Women's Football

Worthing 2-0 Chichester College

Worthing College Women’s football started the season with a 2-0 win against their local rivals with a goal in each half from Sofia Bouyi and Danielle Lane in the ECFA league. After a dominate start which saw Worthing have most of the ball and them camped in Chichester half it was Worthing who created the first chances with Chloe Debaes, Sofia Bouyi and Jordan Lucas all test the Chichester goalkeeper. With the Worthing defence barley being tested but Worthing being wasteful in front of the opposition goal it was a Bouyi corner that broke the deadlock with her scoring straight from the corner, which saw her drill the ball in at the near post and it somehow snuck in between near post and the Chichester goalkeeper. With a 1-0 lead Worthing started to relax and move the ball around well with Lucas, Hale and Bouyi grabbing the initiative in midfield but no more goals came in the 1st half.

The second half started with Chichester coming out and raising the tempo chasing every ball and making plenty of tackles. With this they started to gain more of the ball and test the Worthing defence more without every really testing Lauren Binfield who came on in goal for Britani Wilson at half time. Despite being under more pressure Worthing continued to create chances at the other end with Danielle Lane missing a one on one with the keeper after some good work in midfield. Chichester continued to press for the equaliser throwing more bodies forward and Worthing capitalised on this when Danielle Lane again broke through the defence and this time made no mistake and smashed the ball into the bottom corner of the net. The game finished 2-0, with the games only going to get tougher.

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 1

After a well attended and positive pre season programme the Men's Football Academy had a mixed start to life to their ECFA campaigns, however levels of performance were very promising and therefore this definately bodes well for the rest of the season.

The first team travelled to Eastbourne for a local derby against Sussex Downs and on a small and difficult pitch Worthing started the brighter with some sharp passing football. However their opponents were big, strong and direct and this led to Sussex Downs being 2-0 up at the break with goals coming from one long ball and a poorly defended cross. The next goal was vital and Worthing started the second half like an express train and got that vital goal with Shaun Charles curling the ball over the stranded keeper. 2-1. Worthing could have wondered what might have been if full back George Dowell had slid the ball under the advancing keeper, however his shot was high and blocked. Despite the result Academy coach Dave Hall was still upbeat in reflection; "the lads worked hard and showed a good reaction, especially in the second half. However we need to make sure we cut out the errors and take more shots at goal, but at times the passing and movement is a joy to watch." Jordan Clark, Jack Boxall and George Dowell were the players who caught the eye on the day.

The second team made their debut in the ECFA 2nd XI League and started off by demolising Thames Valley 4-0 at Reading. The goals came from Zaki Rahman, Liam O'Connor and a brace from striker Phil Charman, which led to Academy coach Danny Cullip praising the whole team by saying "all the lads were brilliant today. They all had an excellent attitude and played with smiles on their faces. This is a great start and hopefully it will continue. At times the passing was superb and Liam's goal was an awesome strike!"

Finally Danny and I would like to thank you all this week for your work rate, attitude and most of you making effort with your pre match wear. Hopefully after this week we can look forward to the training, which will develop your game over the coming season. Keep a look out next month for the first edition of Academy "Team Mates", which should bring up some interesting views!!

Cheers,

Hallsy
