Hallsy's Weekly Look Around the Academy - Make or Break...

It was a make or break week for both Worthing Colleges' Men's Football and Rugby sides as they took on top quality opponents in their respective National Leagues. The Rugby Performance Programme took on SEEVIC (Essex) in a double header, which would see the victors progress in the BCS Elite Cup as well as take command on the South East BCS Elite League. Worthing were out for revenge after SEEVIC defeated Worthing in the corresponding fixture back in October and were clearly up for this match in front of a healthy crowd at Worthing Leisure Centre. Worthing ran out 19-8 winners. Kieron Leeming touched down on his return to the side and this was added to by Brad Parker and a catch and drive try from Elliott Luke. The trusted boot of Bart Pegg scored the extras. Performance Programme Coach Ben Coulson was delighted with his players "Upon reflection the boys were superb and showed the correct work ethic, which was combined with their technical abilities. However the boys need to refocus to ensure that this excellent result is not wasted and that we continue at this level of performance for the rest of the season."

Men's Football Coaches Dave Hall and Danny Cullip were in the same frame of mind after an excellent away day result against Kingston College, who have dominated each opponent at their home ground for the last 2 seasons. In this top of the table ECFA National League clash Worthing College 1st XI took at 2-0 lead before half time, with Joe Warner grabbing his 13th goal of the season and Dave O'Callaghan's long range deflected effort. Worthing also spurned many chances to increase their lead and Kingston's goalkeeper was also in fine form, which could have come back to haunt Worthing, especially after Kingston pulled one back, but this was in vein and Worthing ended up 2-1 victors. This now puts Worthing three points clear of Kingston with a game in hand and in addition to this Worthing also have the last 16 of the ECFA National Premier Cup and both 1st and 2nd XI's in their respective County Cup Semi Finals, so there is still plenty to play for during this final three months of the season.

The Women's Football Performance Programme were also in BCS Elite League action against the Chelsea Academy at Chelsea's Cobham training ground. Worthing battled hard and ran their opponents close, but in the end Chelsea were just too strong for their opponents and ended up 2-0 victors. Coach Mike Bridges was still extremely proud of his players and knows that this group of players will learn so much more from this defeat rather than in some of the straight forward victories that this squad has had this season.

Hallsy's Weekly Look Around the Academy

Worthing College Men's Football Performance Programme 1st XI progressed to the last 16 of the ECFA National Premier Cup after a tight cup tie, beating SEEVIC (Essex) 1-0 at the Basildon Sports Village. Lee Mottershead's diagonal pass was latched onto by fellow winger Ryan Fergany, who lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper and took a clattering in the process. The 2nd XI played Strodes in the BCS Performance League and were narrowly defeated 1-0 despite playing all the attractive football. Performance Programme Coach Dave Hall is looking forward to the upcoming fixtures as well as the future of the programme "Both teams this week performed admirably and I'm really looking forward to the next few weeks with league deciders and both County and National Cup matches still to be played. Its a delight to watch both teams playing attractive football and developing as individuals as well as a team, which is what this programme should all be about."

The Women's Performance Programme took on rivals South Downs College of Havant in the BCS Elite League and Worthing turned in an excellent performance to come out 11-3 winners. Sophie Frost, Aliss Pidduck both hit hat tricks, Darcey James and Kirstin McGregor also scored. The remaining three goals were scored by Lucy Somes, who scored these goals in the ten minutes she was on the field of play. Performance Coach Mike Bridges was extremely please with the performance of the whole squad, however special praise was saved for McGregor, who put in a very strong performance in the middle of the park.

The Rugby Performance Programme 1st XV warmed up well for their winner takes all match vs. SEEVIC next week by defeating Godalming College 38-8 in the BCS Elite League. Scorers on the day were Sam Bath, Lewis Maslen, Dec Peake, Sam Cook, Jack Roberts, Harry Green with Barney Lyons adding the extras. The 2nd XV learnt some valuable lessons against Chichester Colleges' 1st XV narrowly losing out 22-17. Josh Bath, Gage Pestridge and Rhys Thompson scored the tries with Gordon Coree adding the extras.

This week the Netball Performance Programme 1st team defeated Sussex Downs of Lewes 30-18 in the Sussex League, a match that Tina Price used her squad to the full as a few squad members were carrying injuries with Amelia Stubbs' ankle injury being a cause for concern with upcoming big fixtures to play in both locally and nationally.

Hallsy's Weekly Look Around the Academy

Worthing College Performance Programme Women's Football Coach Mike Bridges was full of praise for his 1st XI squad even though they just lost out to reigning ESFA National Cup winners Filton College of Bristol in the last 8 on Wednesday at Wick FC. Worthing came from 2-0 down with goals from Jade Widdows and Becky Simmonds to send the tie into an exciting extra time period. Despite Worthing hitting the bar it was Filton who struck first with 5 minutes to go to lead once again. However with two minutes remaining Jade Widdows converted a penalty to send the tie into the lottery that is penalty kicks, which Worthing eventually lost 4-3. "The girls gave it their all today, leaving everything on the pitch and came extremely close to knocking out a side that have been National Cup winners for the last three years, so there are so many positives to come out of this performance, which I'm sure the girls will for the remainder of their BCS Elite League and County Cup campaign." Bridges commented after the final whistle.

The Rugby Performance Programme had a great start to 2012 with a convincing 56-0 victory at East Berkshire College in the BCS Elite League. East Berkshire are a new team to the league, who brought some physicality to this match up, however Worthing's quality on the ball eventually won through. Try scorers were Dec Peake (2), Josh Mitchell (2), Sam Bath, Henry Birch, Brad Parker, Barney Lyons, Farhad Al-Dahimi with Parker kicking the remaining points.

Both Netball Performance Programme teams were in Hampshire League action and they both took on a strong Brockenhurst College at home. The 1st team continued their fine run of form with a 53-24 win, whilst the 2nd team pushed their opponents hard, but were eventually defeated 40-27. These results still leave both sides relatively high up in their respective leagues and this will be something that coach Tina Price will be extremely happy with as the players are competing against high quality opponents, which can only put them in good stead for their upcoming County and National events.

The Men's Football Performance Programme were both in league action this week looking to build upon their solid 2011 form. The 1st XI took on Boreham Wood at Arundel FC and eventually came out 4-1 winners. Joe Warner (2) and two excellent long range efforts from Lee Mottershead and substitute Nathan Webster sealed the points with Worthing still joint top of the ECFA National League with Kingston, who Worthing have a game in hand. Performance Coach Dave Hall was relatively happy with the first performance of 2012. "The lads worked extremely hard to get back to their sharpness levels after the Christmas break and at times played some superb football on a heavy surface. Another positive is that the players are creating chances and this will set them up nicely for a difficult month ahead. If we are still in this position come the middle of February then we will look to change our targets again towards finishing up the National League as high as we can in our first season, but at this point the players still need to keep their feet firmly on the ground." The 2nd XI cemented their second place in the BCS Performance League with a solid 1-0 away win at the City of Westminster College. Chris Potkins netted his third goal in two matches after following up a Ryan Hallett free kick.

Hallsy's Weekly Look Around the Academy - New Year Edition

The Worthing College Sports Performance Programme saw two squads in competitive action this week. Whilst Men's Football, Rugby and Basketball took part in extensive training sessions back at Worthing College the Women's Football Performance Programme travelled to local rivals BHASVIC in the BCS Non-Elite league. This gave Performance coach Mike Bridges an opportunity to see the younger members of the squad in action, possibly looking for future starters in the Elite League. It also gave an opportunity for those coming back from injury a chance to get in some all important game time. In a relatively close affair in the end Worthing's quality shone through in a 3-1 winning scoreline. The goals came from players coming back from injury. Dannielle Lane put the missing out of the final British Colleges' trial behind her with a brace and striker Chloe Debaes netted the third for Worthing.

The Netball Performance Programme took 14 players for both their 1st and 2nd team matches when they travelled to Basingstoke to take on Queen Mary's College, with the emphasis being on all players getting competitive minutes. Worthing left 1st team members Anna Van Eetvelt and Mele Jackson back home to rest, but this did not seem to affect both sides who performed excellently despite their two week layoff over the Christmas period. The 1st team won 42-26 and the 2nd team ran out 38-17 victors. Performance Coach Tina Price was pleased with the afternoon's work "This has been an ideal start to 2012. Today has given all the girls a chance to get all important court time and allow myself to look at the whole squad to see who will be taking their places in the important County Cup and National competition matches later this month. Great credit to all involved as their attitude throughout was excellent."

I would like to wish a happy and productive 2012 to all readers and performance programme players and staff,

Hallsy's Weekly Look Around the Academy - British Colleges Call Ups

The Worthing College Sports Performance Programme have been celebrating individual successes after six of its members have made it through to the final British Colleges' squads in their respective sports. Hooker Dec Peake, lock Charlie Watts and scrum half Brad Parker made it into the final 25 man Rugby squad after being successful at their final trial in Gloucester. The trio will be taking on a Leicester as well as two away fixtures against Portugal. Parker was extremely happy with his call up saying "I felt the trials went well, even though I had a couple of niggling injuries. I'm really looking forward to gaining great experiences from this programme, especially playing the sides we will be taking on in 2012." Parker also praised his team mates as well as Performance Programme Coach Ben Coulson. "I'm so pleased for Dec and Charlie as they have worked extremely hard and performed well over the trials that we went through. I would also like to thank Ben for giving us this opportunity as well as the time and dedication he gives to the whole programme. I'm also looking forward to the rest of the season with the College and hope we progress far in the BCS National League and Cup as well as the County Cup."

The Women's Football Performance Programmes Lucy Somes made it through to her final squad, with the unfortunate Darcey James and Danielle Lane missing out. Performance Coach Mike Bridges was full of praise for all the girls saying "I'm delighted for Lucy as she has performed consistently for us over the last 18 months and this will be an experience that can only make her an even better player. I felt that Darcey also performed excellently in her trial, so I feel for her that she didn't quite make it along with Danielle, who had to pull out of the final trial through injury. Despite only Lucy being successful it shows that the programme has come a long way in such a short space of time and this should be something that the whole women's squad should be proud of." Somes will be attending a February half term training camp at West Brom before moving onto their 2012 fixture programme.

Mele Jackson of the Netball Performance Programme also made it through to the final British Colleges Squad. Jackson was delighted, yet surprised with her selection. "I'm really please to have made the squad as the final trial was so tough. All the girls were extremely talented, so it was a nice surprise when I got in." Performance Programme Coach Tina Price wasn't surprised by Jackson's reaction. "Mele is a really down to earth and is not one of these people who shout about their successes. Mele has performed to an extremely high standard whilst being with us at the college and this is a reward for all her dedication as well as consistency, especially this season." At the end of this month Jackson will be travelling with the squad to Scotland, where she will be taking on the Scottish Under 19's as well as the Scottish Universities sides.

Also in her role of Performance Programme Co-ordinator Price congratulated Worthing 1st Team Hockey player and Worthing College student Ellis Woolley on being the sixth student to gain National Representative honours this season. "As well as our success as teams these individual highlights show how far the Programme has come in just five years. We are now playing at some of the highest College levels for sport in the country, which can only develop the performance of all programme members. The individual success of these six students have been celebrated by all squads and will motivate all to work hard and make sure that 2012 can be a successful year." In addition to this Worthing College student Elliot Storey has tasted success in the recent qualification round of the British Colleges Trampolining Competition. Storey showed good form during his high tariff voluntary routine, which eventually gave him the scores to not only progress, but to win the qualifier. Storey will now compete in the regional heat and will be looking to book a place in the National competition later on in 2012.

Happy New Year to ALL players and staff and here is to a successful 2012,

Hallsy
