Worthing showed great guts and determination to come back from a 7-1 deficit to a 7-6 score line, and could have quiet easily gained an honourable draw or even could have won the game, but a last gasp goal scored by the opposition put paid to that. To many errors and mistakes in the first half gave Sussex downs a 7-1 lead at half time, which it seemed Worthing would never recover from, the match wasn't over yet and we clawed their way back into the game, much to the annoyance of Sussex downs, so close yet so far!
Worthing at this moment in time have turned themselves into a "second half team" always forfeiting the first half and seem at this moment in time to a team that are on a real "rollercoaster ride" we need to compete more in the first half and to stop making so many mistakes, next Wednesday we are competing in the Sussex Sixes Tournament and could do well if we cut down on our errors!

Worthing 2ndXV 22 So

Worthing made the trip just inside the M25 to Strodes College (Founded 1704) for their ¼ final match against the bottle green team. On arrival Worthing took in some of the local surroundings before changing and donning game faces.

The referees pre game talk was substantial and should have been accompanied by an in flight meal alas no food but a game to be played.

Worthing started very well putting a number of phases together and the home side looked worried and a little surprised at the tenacity of the visiting side, smaller yet just as hungry for the win. With only a short period in the opposition 22 Worthing were rebutted by the larger pack and the opportunity was lost. Shortly after this the Strode’s backs made across the field form the set piece, the slide D worked well until a delicious back door offload from the attacking 13 (at this stage looking to be the class of the attacking field) and a good finish was added by the left wing, the kick was well converted. This was definitely a ‘Roe–sham-boe’ square in the gentlemen’s region as Worthing had made the early running, but suck it up they did and back to the attack they went, game back on.

The rest of the first half consisted of Worthing playing all of the rugby and Strode kicking away any possession they had through the cultured right boot of the 10, however this did mean that Conroy-Smith was able to counter attack (may be he could grow a kicking game?) with interest. The visitors used this as the catalyst to pour more and more pressure onto the home team at this stage playing off scraps but holding the lead. Jordan managed to slot a shot at the horns from inside the 22m after some more good work from the Worthing pack. 7-3 at the half and Worthing looking to take advantage of their technical if not tactical superiority.

At the break a step change in approach was called for in tightening up the play from the line out and pulling in more of the players form first phase. With just 5mins of the half gone the ideal chance to gain the initiative a line out on the home sides 22, catch and drive and Pitchford went over as a result of some excellent work from the pack. Metters added the extras Worthing taking a 10-7 lead.

Worthing played some very good rugby putting phases together but just letting the good work come undone at the minute. Wigzell and smart had their best games so far carrying well and dominating the scrum top work lads. Collins was consistent in the delivery of lineouts and the experience of Bush, Pitchford and Walsh was showing thorough. Cook continues his good work from the back row and Parker was starting to get the side going from the base of the breakdown.

Jordan was linking well with the centres well and making ground when given the chance, Metters, Fitzgerald and Hart and Frost before them closed down any attack from the home side keeping the tide flowing in the right direction. White Stirling and Lee were not in the game all of the time but when called upon they took care of business. In the same way that the forwards did with another excellent catch and drive expertly controlled and scored by Wigzell for his first Worthing 5 pointer.

The final nail in the Strode coffin was hammered in after a rampaging Walsh run and quick recycle, a great by Bush and gather by White finished the job. Matters hit the left upright with the conversion and it went over 22-7.

A good effort and a semi final to be played, well done to all involved.

Worthing college V collyers
An easy game for the academy today as we turned up to see a 5 man collyers squad.. We ran our bench for most of the game & comfortably strolled to a 64-42 victory!
Collyers didn't supply a scorebook so no personal scores or running scores available!
All Worthing members scored baskets in a convincing team performance!
As a sporting guesture after completing th match in quick time we ran a mixed team scrimmage with collyers, integrating both teams wich gave our guys an extra session to work up a sweat before cooling down & travelling home with the win

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 13

With the worst of the weather behind us both Worthing College Academy Football teams were in action this week, with the 2nd XI taking on Chichester High in the Sussex League and the 1st XI contesting their most important game of the season in Gloucester against a strong looking Cirencester side for a place in the last 8 of the English Colleges National Cup.

The 1st XI set off early to ensure a safe and relaxed journey west and all players were in buoyant mood after their Friday exploits against a physical Ravenswood team. The only change from that starting line up was Andy Heward returning in the heart of the defence to partner Jack Boxall with Nick Colwell being the unfortunate one to miss out due to suspension. Matty Rance returned to the bench to potentially secure his third cap for the Academy along with Chris Churchill and Phil Charman.

The main ethos from the team was to have “no regrets” and “not to miss out on this opportunity”. After speaking to the opposition manager coach Dave Hall alluded to the Worthing team that the Cirencester centre half had just been picked for England, so the boys knew the magnitude of the task ahead. The cup tie was played on a flat, yet bobbly surface with a strong wind blowing from left to right. Captain Luke Jearum appeared to lose the toss and this meant that Worthing were kicking with the wind at their backs, but the sun in their eyes. The boys could not have asked for a better start and were ahead inside 30 seconds (surely the fastest goal in Worthing Colleges’ Academy history!). Tomas Nemeth, who has impressed whenever he has played for the first team won the ball in the opposition third, played a one two with Alex Staines and played in left striker Sam Mannings to fire through the legs of the home goalkeeper. 1-0.

What a start!! However this got even better inside 3 minutes, Nemeth again was the provider putting in Mannings again to fire the ball into the top corner from 12 yards out. 2-0. Worthing needed to now concentrate because all too often teams who score too early often become unstuck, so discipline was the name of the game surely? The conditions were not too conducive for free flowing football and both sides struggled to string a number of passes together. The home side responded to the early set back relatively well and began to fly into the tackle, which was well dealt with by the referee. Worthing seemed to cope well with this response, with Andy Heward, Jack Boxall, Ali Giammattei and George Dowell standing firm as Worthing’s back line, but when Cirencester did attempt to break their duck goalkeeper James Fernandes was in inspired form.

As the half went on Worthing knew that a 2 goal lead was potentially not enough to secure this tie, so their attacking style was required to gain a third and it almost came from a Nemeth corner, which was swung in at pace and Jordan Clark rose highest only for the ball to be kicked off the line! That was a near miss, but Worthing were to add to their tally minutes later and it was Mannings again to complete his hat trick, this time straight from a corner, which beat the Cirencester goalkeeper all ends up. 3-0.

With not long to go now in the half Worthing just needed to keep their sheet clean to ensure the match was theirs, however this was not to be with the Cirencester number 10 getting in between Boxall and Heward to loop the ball over Fernandes with his head. 3-1. If you thought this was bad the worst was yet to come. Jordan Clark tangled with the “England player”, which resulted in the home player stamping on Clark (video evidence of this). Alex Staines looked to diffuse the situation, but this culminated into “hand bags” with the ball up and away in Worthing’s half. The referee was obviously watching the ball and left it to the Cirencester substitute, who was running the line to accuse Staines of an intentional headbutt. The referee then showed Staines a straight red card and left the England centre half walking away from the incident. Worthing needed to now keep their heads and get through the last 50 minutes or so with 10 men. Coach Dave Hall made the tactical switch of reverting to a 4-4-1 formation with Nemeth moving into the lone striker role. Luckily for Worthing their opponents failed to trouble Fernandes before the half time whistle.

The word at half time was to keep possession, be brave and have no regrets. With the wind at their back Cirencester were confident of taking the tie to at least extra time and started strongly by pushing players forward at will. Fernandes was called into action a few times in the opening exchanges of the half, but his handing was exceptional. With this pressure Worthing soaked it up with great maturity and commitment and were beginning to catch Cirencester on the break, Nemeth played in Mannings only for him to shoot wide. Back came the home side with a number of corners and throw ins, which seemed to come one after the other. Fernandes was brave with his punching as was Clark, Luke Jearum, Boxall and Mannings with their heading and clearing. By soaking up this pressure Worthing were rewarded mid way through the second half. Jordan Clark played in a Beckham style free kick by using the wind as his friend, which found Andy Heward, who had made an exceptional late run and he volleyed the ball past the despairing Cirencester goalkeeper, which led to wild celebrations and even coach Dave Hall “got emotional”. 4-1.

Worthing were again confident and changes were made to replace tired legs. Chris Churchill came on for Nemeth and almost straight away made an impact, but just failed to get his shot off after beating his man in the area. Cirencester were becoming increasingly frustrated and this began to show in their play and their whole approach to the game. The moaning began, as did the kicking. Ben Standing, who had been excellent throughout almost had his head taken off from a flailing boot, which led to heated exchanges between the sets of players. This led to Standing being replaced by Phil Charman and Andy Heward was replaced by Matty Rance for his third cap. This meant Jordan Clark moving back to centre half with Rance taking his place in midfield.

For the last 10 minutes Cirencester tried to give it all they have to get back into the game and they did finish the scoring with a long ball over the top, which beat the defence and the number 10 lobbed the ball over the advancing Fernandes. 4-2. There was still time for Worthing to have another chance to seal it. Mannings played the ball across to Churchill, who toed it through to Phil Charman who from a close angle found the goalkeepers chest rather than the goal.

As the final whistle went Worthing were respectful in victory and at the same time excited and pleased with their efforts. The lads performed admirably, even though it wasn’t the best they had played football wise it was a mature and professional team performance. All of the boys should be proud of their efforts and look forward to their potential opponents in the quarter finals.

Meanwhile the 2nd XI played against a better than expected Chichester High team, who ran out 4-3 winners in the Sussex League. Worthing raced into a 3-1 lead with Matt Dodd, Ezio D’Ercole and Zaki Rahman scoring for Worthing, however attitudes were poor and complacency set in, which resulted in this defeat. In reflection the lads are having a great season, but they must make sure that they continue to up their efforts to ensure that complacency does not rear its ugly head again.

Hope you all have a good half term and thanks again for all your efforts.

Onwards & Upwards!!

Worthing XV 29 v Plumpton/Central Sussex XV 17

The first victory of the week was getting two games on for the rugby squad so a big thank you to Tina and Mike for getting this one organised. Plumpton college also played their part in putting on the game and went so far as to make up the numbers by calling in a favour from Central Sussex College and it was 15 a side at 2.15pm.

The going was officially good to soft and heavy in places but the grass was in plentiful supply which allowed for a safe and competitive game to take place.

Worthing lined up with a changed line up with a mixture of players from both the 1st and 2nd teams, units and combinations being mixed up therefore allowing players to perform along side first second and third year academy students.

The start of the match went with the larger home side attacking one out from the breakdown and making inroads into the lighter younger visiting side whom could have been accused of tackling too high. This had the knock on effect of metres being lost around the ruck and an early foray in to the Worthing 22m was eventually halted by solid defensive organisation and manful efforts. This was the last trip up the hill for a while for the home side as the defence held firm and made Plumpton kick, this was charged down and gathered by Clare who made off down the touch line showing a clean pair of heals to the following defenders and dotted down under the horns for the first try.

A carbon copy run down the left wing was to follow minutes later as an excellent break out from the Worthing try line created by Jordan, Fitzgerald, Hart and onto Clare brought the 2nd 5 pointer.

Worthing toiled against a larger and more physical side that though short on cohesion were big on aggression and were more than keen to try everything within the laws (and some things outside them) to gain the advantage. Worthing had the ascendency in the lineout and first phase of the scrum with the tight areas of phase play being dominated by the home side. Worthing got a little excited and tried to run from all over the pitch, this was commendable however it did put the visitors under pressure leading to turn overs in inconvenient place on the field..

As the game progressed the were notable performances from Clare on the wing looking dangerous with ball in hand, White with a very high tackle count and Parker was industrious around the break down. Burgess was leading the front row strongly, Collins had a welcome return to play following a long injury and academic sabbatical, Luke carried well in open play and from the base of the scrum although as Pitchford said “his offloads and sling it” as the one handed show time didn’t get the job done as the two handed assist make would have done but that is for another day. Bailey again showed improvement in all areas of his game which is pleasing to see.

While the game was stop start with refereeing decisions, freezing weather (and snow) and changing combinations throughout the 4 periods of play and allowed the slightly more substantial and endurance challenged players the chance to get into and stay in the game. As this was the case standards dropped towards the end of the game and Worthing were able to cross for two more scores near the end Parker scoring in the corner which was a nice finish to the day.

Great to eventually get a game, not excellent having to change so much the day before but Worthing managed to take care of their business and that will do for now. Another big training and playing week to come the week after half term so have a good time out over the next week but make sure you take care of yourselves. Well done on a good win in difficult conditions.

Women's Football County Cup Semi-Final

Collyers 0-10 Worthing College

Worthing College Women’s Football Team continued the defence of their county cup in emphatic style away to Collyers in the Semi-Final. With Worthing playing some good football in patches and scoring some goals from the first whistle it was evident that there was only going to be one winner. Despite scoring 10 goals the girls will be disappointed they didn’t score more.

Player of the Match: Sophie Frost strong performance in the middle of midfield mixed in with some real quality on the ball at times.

Goals: Chloe Debaes 4, Danielle Lane 3, Sofia Bouyi, Lauren Binfield and Megan Priest

Worthing college V West Kent college

we have had great battles with west kent in the past so we were looking forward to a tough game today. west kent are very well coached very structured & athletic we had to play hard for 40 minutes to get the win
we had worked all week on a guard press defense so from the tip we came out full court & put the pressure on!
we jumped out the blocks & raced to a 13-2 lead louis harris connecting from inside & outside, our defense was awesome & set the tone of the game. matt sharp & lucy uncles came on & really stepped up the pressure. west kent were rattled & coughed up the ball & we punished them outscoring them 25-9 in the opening 10 minutes. a great start!
the second quarter started & we again locked up on 'd', matt sharp was all over the guards turning them inside out. we found our outside shot & hit 4 3 pointers, 2 from matt sharp, 1 from louis harris & 1 from ollie hunt off our bench! west kent kept plugging away though & found some success under our hoop with some offensive rebound put backs. we again outscored west kent this time 21-18 making the score going into the half 46-27
we had started really well at both ends. our defense was working hard & we had frustrated west kent we had to keep the pressure on them.
as the 3rd quarter started west kent opened the scoring & looked focused on the comeback. but scores from ian marshall & louis harris answered west kent's efforts. but on the back of a big 3 pointer west kent rallied & seemed to regain some momentum. we made some changes & matt sharp stepped up in the closing minutes of the 3rd to score 2 swift lay ins & a deep 3 pointer to give us a 61-43 lead heading into the final stanza ( we had been outscored by west kent 16-15 in the period )
as the 4th & final quarter started west kent went on a 7 point run. we answered with scores from jack ryan & ian marshall. west kent kept coming & again connected from 3 point range, they were hanging around trying to get back into the game. a jump shot from lucy uncles & free throws from louis harris kept our score board ticking over & us the advantage. as time ran down we kept our cool & stayed ahead closing out the game for a 72-62 win! we had been outscored in the 4th 19-11 but the early hard worked had paid off & given us a much deserved victory

Worthing College XV 82 v Itchin College IXV 5

With late cancellations and a week of friendlies Worthing fielded two squads of equal strength in this afternoons fixtures. With 45 fit players to select from it was important to ensure game time for all squad members in what was the final Wednesday afternoon of a very frustrating half term. The home fixture played at Worthing Leisure Centre saw Worthing run out comfortable winners against Itchin in what was the first fixture between the two colleges. The game was physical however Worthing’s structure and commitment to keep the ball alive resulted in some excellent scores from all areas of the field. In fact the best rugby from Worthing was shown during a set play from a lineout where forwards and backs inter link from one side of the field to the other and had the final pass gone to hand it would have been the highlight of the afternoon. A number of players who have spent most of the season within the IIXV shone well showing that the foundations are looking good for 2010/11.

The Worthing try scorers were Harcus, Birch, Goldsmith, Roberts, Bush, Ball, Frost, Dowglass, Brown, Bone, Double and Green. Kicking duties were down to Hills and Double who kicked well. The squad now look forward to the final push with big games coming up in the county cup, BCS elite cup and the Sussex league.

Alton College V Worthing College Netball 2nd Team

Our first Netball Match in a long time due to weather conditions, we took the hour and half journey up to Alton College, with navigator Pippa not getting me lost once!

The 1st quarter and the girls settled into the game, passing a bit loose and defending needing a bit of work but with the girls not having the opportunity of match for quite some time the score of  9 – 6 to Worthing College was a promising start.  With no shooter, Jodie and Emma M were doing a good job.

In the 2nd quarter the game plan started to fade a bit, Alton College upped their game and started matching us point for point, Worthing College started giving the ball away a bit and they needed to settle back down and play their own match.  At the end of this quarter is was very clear that we were going to have work very hard if we wanted to win this game.  The score was 13 – 13.

With a few half time changes in the 3rd quarter we went back in and tried to sort out our passing, but it was just not coming together.  With the shooting being still good, the girls were just struggling to get the ball up to Jodie and Emma M so they could get the points for them.  Worthing College held Alton College in this quarter with an end score of 19 – 18, with one point in it we knew to win we would have to get it together, sort out our passing and defending.

In the 4th quarter things just went wrong, a bit of panic from the Worthing girls, they tried to get the game under control but it just did not happen.  Alton College started to put together some good plays and started to test the Worthing girls.  The game was so close it could of gone either way, but to be honest Worthing College should of taken the game but they just could not manage it in the end.

The game ended on Worthing College 25 – Alton College 27.  Very disappointing for all the girls, but some points to take away and work on ready for the next game.

Hallsy's Academy Report - Friday Edition

Another guest reporter for you on this special Friday edition. Academy Captain Luke Jearum takes you through Friday's ECFA National Cup action against Ravenswood School of Kent.

Worthing College Vs Ravenswood School

There were two changes to the side that lost to Chichester on wednesday. Nick Colwell came in for Andy Heward who had work commitments and Thomas Nemeth came in to the middle of the park. This left Matt Dodd, Jack Carey, Iain Haggart and Phil Charman on the bench. Ravenswood started better, they were first to the ball, and worthing were giving them too much time. This led them to stringing a few passes together and having more of the ball early on. Worthing then came in to the game, with the return of form for Ali Giammatei. The versatile left back made some crucial tackles which then enabled him to run at ravens wood, releasing Sam Mannings. Manning then beat a couple of defenders and fired a shot over the bar. Another chance came Worthings way when Jordan Clark hit a free kick just over the bar after a good move involving Thomas Nemeth, Jordan Clark and Alex Staines. Mid way through the half, Ravens wood scored against the run of play, with a long punt from their keeper, which released the ravenswood number 9 who finished from a tight angle. Worthing continued to play some good football and won a couple of corners in quick concession. One of these lead to a goal with Jearum making it 1-1 on the stroke of half time.

Worthing started the second half brightly, playing higher up the pitch causing Ravens wood lots of problems.Worthings defence was very solid, with Nick Colwell "opening a can of Nick" on more than one occasion. Worthing were playing with a lot of confidence, getting the ball to the wide men, Standing and Mannings. Stains saw a good effort saved after he flicked the ball up and volleyed from the edge of the box. Jack Boxy also saw a volley go wide after good work from Ben Standing. At 1-1 Fernandez made a great save at the other end to keep worthing in the game. Ravens wood started to tire with Worthings fitness giving them a big advantage. Worthing continued to pile on the pressure, creating more chances but werent able to convert any. George "Glen" Dowell broke in to the penalty area and should of had a penalty after he was brought down. It was looking like "one of those days". With five minutes left Dowell went on another of his weaving runs beating the ranvens wood defenders getting to the by line, he then pulled the ball back to Jearum who tapped in from 5 yards. 2-1. Two Minutes later Worthing were safely through to the next round, when Clark released Mannings down the left who then crossed the ball for the substitute Charman who finished cooly with his head. 3-1. Next up Cirencester in the last 16 on wednesday.

Brockenhurst 43 Worthing Netball 1st 26 BCS Cup

On a wet, cold Wednesday the netball 1st team traveled to the New Forest to play probably one of the best teams at U19 in the country. It was an educational experience for some of the girls, who had never been to that part of the country before, seeing ponies wandering free in the forest and on the roads !

Following our narrow defeat to them in the league (3 goals) Brockenhurst came out with their full squad, determined to make it through to the next round. Worthing were equally determined to play much better than the week before and got off to a good start, scoring first and the game was evenly matched for the first 10 mins, a number of unforced errors on both sides, which then developed into more on Worthing’s part and we ended the first quarter 13 – 7 down.

The second quarter was more competitive with Brockenhurst winning it 9 -6, taking the half time score to 22 – 13. Changes were made in the defence as Caitlin had incurred the wrath of the umpires at both end, somewhat unfairly at times, as Brockenhurst are very good at contact on the blind side of the umpires, we are more obvious – something we need to learn.

Mele started well at GK, and Hannah but Worthing continued to be pulled for footwork and contact and heads started to drop – Brockenhurst won the 3rd quarter 13 -5. With nothing to lose Hannah went to GA, with Caitlin coming back on at GD. The girls were determined to give everything in the last quarter even though the result was beyond them. It was achieved as the score for the final quarter was 8 – 8, our best quarter. The final score was 43 -26 not a disgrace and a much better performance than 8 days before.

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 12

"Snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory" was the quote of the day from coach Dave Hall after the 1st XI unexplicably gave away a comfortable lead to lose 5-3 to local rivals Chichester College. Worthing started the game in positive mood and took to the diffuclt playing conditions better than their local opponents, by again playing the more attractive football but just missing out on the final piece of the jigsaw (goals). The opener came after defender George Dowell took it upon himself to shoot and shoot he did after beating a couple of opponents. 1-0.

Worthing began to dominate and looked relatively comfortable and at times played some excellent passing football, for which we have become renound for. However warning shots were fired with the home defence again being beaten by one ball only for James Fernandes to deny the Chichester striker not once, but twice. As the half grew Chichester became more confident and against the run of play equalised. From an outswinging corner the ball was only half cleared and the ball was returned with interest into the top corner (with a little bit of slice!). 1-1.

The response was first rate. Worthing seemed to go straight down the other end and restore their lead. Jordan Clark's shot was only parried for the returning Luke Jearum to knock the ball past the desparing keeper. 2-1. That was how it stayed until half time.

Surely now Worthing's only enemy is conplacency? Was it going to rear its ugly head?? The answer to that question is coming up...

Chichester started the half brightly and quicker restored parity. A long throw in was poorly defended and ended up with the ball finishing up in the top corner of the net. 2-2. Again Worthing responded well and played some exicitng football, but lacking clinical finishing Worthing couldn't put light between themselves and their visitors. Worthing did however scored an exceptional third goal with Dowell playing a short free kick to winger Ben Standing, who put in a tantilising cross for top scorer Alex Staines to notch his 11th goal of the season. 3-2.

From this point on until 8 minutes from time Worthing were extremely comfortable and could have extended their lead, however they ended up giving an experts guide to "how to lose a game in 8 minutes". However in conclusion this could be a positive indicator as to ensure that all players are grounded and not having the attitude of "thinking you are better that you actually are" and I'm hopeful that the ideal time to put this right is tomorrow in the ECFA National Cup.

Within Hallsy's Academy Report guest writers now have the opportunity to report on the 2nd XI team action. This week its the turn of defender Iain Haggart.

The 2nd 11 took on East Berkshire this week.
The squad was weakened due to injuries to Thom Taylor, Matt Dodd was called up to the 1st team and Zaki Rahman had an exam. Due to this problem we sorted the situation out by playing captain for the game Iain Haggart in midfield with Tomas Nemeth, Des O’Connor and Phil Charman.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at the fortress Worthing United but an hour before the meet time the game was moved to the back of the leisure centre due to United not wanting us to ruin their pitch before the weekend.
East Berkshire weren’t impressed with this due to the fact they had drove to United only to find out they were playing at the leisure centre. When they arrived at the leisure centre quite a large amount of the players looked awfully familiar to us. The reason was because they decided to bring down at least half of their 1st team ,(including Kenwyne Jones) who our 1st team beat in the national cup earlier this season.

The game began on a rather sloppy start for both teams possibly due to the heavy, boggy pitch conditions which made it hard to find a killer pass or get enough of a foothold in the pitch to make the breaks.
The first goal was scored around the mid point of the half and went to the away team. The ball was chipped over the top to the striker and he was allowed to turn on the edge of the box and shot scoring off the inside of the post.
This brought Worthing to life and once Iain and Tomas started getting the ball wide to Des and Phil there was more threat to the away goal, with Phil, Ezio, and Paul all came close to scoring. But towards the end of the half we got caught again letting the striker have too much room on the edge of the box and he scored in the bottom left of the goal just out of the reach of keeper Gillard.
Worthing continued to press for the final 10 minutes of the half and almost had an equaliser just on half time via a thumping header by Haggart from a corner but the keeper, who was their 1st team keeper, pulled of a world class save to his left to deny the goal after Haggart had rose excellently amongst a crowd of players, another day or another keeper and it would have been 2-1 at halftime.

The 2nd half began on a bad note with us conceding straight from kick off. A long ball over the top wasn’t dealt with and allowed the striker to have an easy finish. Worthing though after this dominated the rest of the match after that early goal and a new formation of 4-3-3 helped prevent any more chances for the away team allowing us to be more attacking up front. Chances continued to come but the ball wouldn’t fall in the correct position or go the correct side of the post and you thought it just wasn’t going to be our day.
This was until the yet again impressive Tomas Nemeth played a long ball towards the corner for Paul Jackson. It looked impossible for him to get anywhere seeing as he had two defenders closing in on him but after seeing Nani at the weekend replicated
one of his tricks by nut megging one defender and running round the other defender and shot past the keeper to make it 3-1.
However this was the last real piece of action in the game and the away side shut the game down and ended up losing 3-1. However on a positive note with the squad we had and the way we played in the 2nd half we can be happy with the performance against the best team we have played this season and with a full strength squad I believe the result would have gone our way.

So onwards and upwards to all and thanks to Iain for his report.

Cheers,

Hallsy

basketball match report 3/2/10

Worthing college V Canterbury college

coming into the game we knew we would have a tough challenge on our hands. last time we played Canterbury the game was abandoned after a serious neck injury to our point guard josh mountifield it was a close contest & we had seen their many strengths. we would have to bring our A game to come out on top.
before the start we stressed tough defense & aggressive offense we had to take it to them.
from the tip we seemed focused. a changed starting 5 for us (due to exams) came together well & gio corpuz got us off to a good start speedily getting to their hoop! Canterbury settled & let the game come to them, a spread offensive set got them some easy scores! they went on a mini scoring run & we found ourselves down 15-7 early in the quarter. but sparked from an ian marshall 3-pointer we clawed ourselves back into the game! 2 big scores from jack ryan & a tough inside hoop from tom wyatt finished the scoring for the 1st & brought us to within a point, down 19-18 after the opening 10 minutes a good start!
the 2nd quarter saw us come out the aggressor. ian marshall driving to the hoop drawing a foul & getting to the free throw line, followed by baskets from tom wyatt & mutalib 'mimo' habib (fresh off the bench) to give us a 23-19 lead ( sadly this was our only lead of the game!) Canterbury answered & erupted with a 10 point scoring run. we stopped this with 2 hoops, 1 from louis harris & the other a great outside jump shot from ollie hunt! again Canterbury answered with smart basketball plays getting inside our defense. a buzzer beating 3 pointer from jack ryan kept us in contention going into the half down 32-30! ( we had been outscored 13-12 in the 2nd period )
at the half we heard their coach going mad at them as we had got them out of their sets with some tough defense, we had them somewhat rattled & had to keep in their faces! we had played a great half we had to now step it up a gear.
the 3rd quarter started & Canterbury went on a tear, they stepped up the intensity & went on a scoring run! we called time out! they had the momentum & we weren't being aggressive enough at both ends! we attacked their hoop after the time out & got to the line but couldn't connect & found ourselves down 44-31!  scores from louis harris, ian marshall & tanaka mujeri brought us closer but were answered by dagger 3 pointers from Canterbury! 2 more hoops from ian marshall made the score 49-41 to Canterbury heading into the final stanza! ( we had been outscored 17-11 in the 3rd )
we had to chase the game, up the pressure & play harder than them in the final 10 minutes!
as the 4th quarter started it looked as if we had ran out of gas! Canterbury went to their big man & he seemed to score at will (10 points in the final period alone ) we couldn't stop him & the game slipped away from us! we never gave up & kept fighting, matt sharp hit a big 3 pointer to close the gap to 10 but that was as close as we got as Canterbury ran away with the game! we were outscored 20-12 in the 4th quarter! making the final score 69-55 to Canterbury! a tough loss but hats off to a better side on the day!

gio corpuz- 4 points

Hallsy's Academy Report - New Year Special (Late!)

This week the match report has been completed by quest writer and Academy left winger, Zaki Rahman.

Worthing started the game well, getting amongst Lewisham early doors, and were rewarded through an Ezio D’Ercole goal after 10 minutes. 1:0 Worthing
Worthing continued to press but were caught napping in defence to let in the Lewisham centre-forward for an unexpected equalizer.
Worthing usually bounce back well but a deep cross to the back post evaded the Worthing keeper and left an easy tap in – 2:1 Lewisham.
The big Lewisham centre midfielder began to dominate the middle of the park, and a well worked third goal came just before the half time break. Half time 3:1 Lewisham.
Worthing knew they had to step up their game and a second half change to a 4-3-3 formation proved inspirational. Immediately after half-time, the Lewisham left back darted into the area and was left to finish easily, with Worthing making the worst possible start to the second half. 4:1 Lewisham.
Straight from centre, Worthing were awarded a free-kick which was exquisitely converted by Tomas Nemeth. 4:2 Lewisham.
Worthing started to push harder and put pressure on a fragile Lewisham defence and a smart move from Worthing midfield saw Thom Taylor one on one with the Lewisham keeper, finishing at the second attempt. 4:3 Lewisham.
A moment later Worthing made it 3 goals in 3 minutes with makeshift centre midfielder, Zaki Rahman, catching the keeper out from 25 yards – a generous goal to concede. 4:4.
Worthing’s new formation continued to dominate midfield and the three strikers formed a good combination, pulling the Lewisham defence apart.
Man of the match, Tomas Nemeth, opened up the Lewisham defence with a darting run and a killer reverse pass, leaving Liam “Des” O’Connor to put Worthing in the lead for the second time in the match. 5:4 Worthing.
Lewisham will feel hard done by squandering a handful of chances to level the game – the closest being an edge of the area strike that hit the upright just before the final whistle.
Worthing showed great spirit to fight back against second in the table Lewisham who claimed it was the “easiest” game they’d played this season – but that just goes to prove football’s a game of two halves!

Cheers Zaki for producing such a good and hopefully accurate report,

Hallsy

BEACON COLLEGE 5 WORTHING COLLEGE 8
      SCORERS; RICHARDSON X3, HELMER X2, SYMONS X1LOCKWOOD X1, COOK X1
                                     M.O.M. SCOTT RICHARDSON.
                                  " A TALE OF TWO HALVES "

A team that goes 4 nil down after 12 minutes is a team that usually does not recover and win the match, but Worthing decided not to lie down and roll over and did just that.
Travelling to deepest ,darkest Sussex with only 10 men would prove to be a tough mission, which within the first 12 minutes was proved to be, the players were having to play out of normal positions and with poor marking Tom Gill,in goal could do little to stop a 4-0 scorline being achieved by the home side. A team going 4-0 up after such a short time will either go on and win the match convincingly, or will mentally think the game is already won and switch off, luckily the latter happened this afternoon and our cunning plan to go 4-0 down and then go on to win the game worked, Worthing managed to reply with 2 goals before half-time....game on!
It was pointed out at the half time team talk that Beacon had a couple off weak links in their defence, so we decided to target them and low and behold free hits and short corners were conceded by the hapless Beacon weak links, within 20 minutes of the re-start we went 6-4 up much to the annoyance of the Beacon supporters, then Beacon scored once again to make the match a nail biting one! Worthing did not loose discipline and shape and easily went on to score 2 more goals and win the match 8-5.
This was a fantastic achievement by the players and proved that they have got a great level of determination and effort and that they can achieve the impossible, bring on Eastbourne!
