Netball Worthing 26 Hurstpierpoint 43

Quarter Finals – County Cup

On a bitterly cold afternoon, the netball team took on Hurstpierpoint in the County Cup, I always thought it would be a close game, having played them in the Nationals Knock Out competition and lost by 1. Unfortunately this was not to be the case.

Hurst always looked like the team that wanted to win, they started stronger, were first to every ball, we appeared stationery and at times uninterested. Shooting was poor and despite their defense being smaller than our attack, they collected all the rebounds. The first quarter ended 17-5 in their favour.

Changes were made but sadly this had little effect on the game, although we conceded less goals, 9 we only scored 5 – the score at the end of the second quarter was 24-10.

A further change was made at half time and during the third quarter, Worthing College started to play netball, we went on a roll scoring 8 goals without response and started to believe in ourselves, this rattled the opposition and they started missing shots and throwing balls away. Sadly Caitlin collided with the goal post, splitting her lip and inside of her mouth and with blood pouring everywhere, she had to leave the court. This meant the team had to be reshuffled again and we won that quarter 11-7.

Going into the last quarter 31-21 down was hard but 10 goals in netball is never too much and if we had started the 4th quarter as we started the 3rd we would have been in with a chance. Sadly we did not and the final score was 43-26.

A massive disappointment for me, as although on the night the best team won, sadly the Worthing College team did not turn up and play, apart from 10 mins.

We have some footage of the horror show which we will look at in depth and try and establish what went so badly wrong and why before we go and face Brockenhurst next Wed in the BCS Cup.
