basketball match report 27/1/10

Worthing college V Angmering

we came into todays game expecting a very tough challenge facing a very talented Angmering side. we had to be focused for 40 minutes to steal a win!

from the opening tip the game was very tight. louis harris opened the scoring for us with a smooth score inside. ian marshall was aggressively attacking their hoop & scored some tough baskets but Angmering answered. both teams struggled to break loose in the first quarter. Angmering were ahead 3 points after the opening 10 minutes 22-19

going into the 2nd quarter we stressed tough defense & the game plan was to get to the basket. our defense stepped up & was sparked by lucy uncles & matt sharp off the bench forcing Angmering to take outside jumpshots that we rebounded well. 2 big 3 pointers from louis harris kept us going & we outscored Angmering 14-12 in the 2nd but they were still ahead 34-33 at the half!

we were in a fight & needed to step up our intensity at both ends!

as the 3rd quarter started Angmering stepped up the pressure & began to press. we didn't react well to this & coughed up the ball. our plan was to force the game inside but we settled for outside shots & were not hitting! Angmering took advantage & outscored us 18-16 in the 3rd. josh mountifield showed signs after 2 great takes to the hoop nearing the end of the period as we found ourselves down 52-49 going into the 4th!

heading into the final stanza i told the guys it would come down to who wanted it more go out & take it to them we needed to play harder & get fired up

Angmering took the early lead on the back of some great scoring drives. our defense was soft & we needed to up the pressure. each time we scored it was answered by Angmering we couldn't quite claw our way back into the game always down 2 or 4 points & time was running out! but then we found a spark, josh mountifield relentlessly attacked their hoop & scored 13 big points for us in the quarter! we didn't give up & after an amazing rebound put-back from jack ryan we found ourselves in a tied game with 22 seconds remaining! 74-74! Angmering called a time out. we needed to play some tough defense as we knew they would run a set play for a last second shot.. out of the time out Angmering did just that, ran a play for their shooter, we matched up & forced them into a tough shot that they hit! 76-74 Angmering. we called a time out of our own, 6 seconds remaining! we drew up a play for ian marshall to drive to the hoop! we needed a score to tie, or a 3 to win but sadly our play was rushed & i feel that fouls weren't called on the driving ian marshall or louis harris whom ian kicked the ball to for the final shot! sadly time ran out.the buzzer sounded & we were unable to fire up a shot! game Angmering 76-74! we let this one slip away, we had played with great fire & intensity in the final minutes of the game but we needed to bring it for the full 40! we must take that attitude into our next game. hats off to a very talented Angmering team.
