Worthing College IXV 54 v Steyning IXV 3 (A)

Worthing College started their Daily Mail Cup season with a convincing victory away at local rivals Steyning.

IXV debuts were handed to 8 players and the team saw a total of 11 changes from the BCS side of last week.

Worthing were dominant from the whistle with number 8 and captain Matt Sercombe scoring a 25 minute first half hat trick.

Jack Roberts at Blind Side had a very physical game and offered something very different to the normal Worthing College high tempo and free flowing game. The newly formed Back Row of Roberts, Laszlow and Sercombe worked effectively in both attack and defence.

At half time injuries to Steyning forwards required the game to go to uncontested scrums. This disrupted Worthing's momentum and coupled with some interesting refereeing broke up the game to a point where little of the first half shape and focus remained. Changes were made to the. Worthing side to ensure all players in the match day squad would have a chance to take the field. The whistle was blown early shortly after the 50 differential was reached.

Worthing will reflect on the game positively but will also recognise the importance of working in units and to maintain focus so as scoring opportunities are maximised.

Man of the Match - Matt Sercombe

Scorers - Sercombe 3, Roberts 2, Double 1 (7 conversions), Claire 1 and Harcus 1
