BCS Women's Rugby 10s

Sleepy eyes were in evidence as the players and coaches met for the trip to the Army town of Aldershot. The competition was made up of four sides and to be played on a round robin basis. Worthing would play against Farnborough College, Peter Symonds and Brockenhurst College opening the and closing the event and hopefully defending successfully the title they won last year.

Worthing started off strongly against their less experienced opponents from Farnborough with a 48-0 victory, tries coming from all the way through the playing squad and every player getting on and into the competition.

Following this there was a lengthy wait and an opportunity to have a watch of the other teams assembled firstly the Symonds team that were heavily fancied owing to the many county and regional players within their ranks. Worthing got a 12-0 lead in the first half and then it got a lot more tight as the opposition found their form. Worthing managed to get out to 22-10 and then a very good try from the Symonds team made the last couple of minutes very tense indeed.

The performance from Gatland and Wilson Hardy both with a brace of scores was excellent this was as a result of some strong running and great evasive footwork. The team made good progress forwards and began to play some very good rugby.

On to the last game and a must win as there were still two teams that could mathematically win, however it was Worthing that had it in their hands, a win would mean a successful defence of their title.

Brockenhurst were depleted with injuries from the tough days play but this was to be put to the back of Worthing minds as it was game on. Some excellent inter play in the first half lead to trys from Northeast and Sophie showing how far the team had com in the short period of time they had been together.

The second half brought further improvement and Worthing scored more tries a great team effort lead to Moore scoring in the corner and Cave finished off proceedings with the best individual effort of the day beating 5 defenders from 60m.

A great start to the rugby season for Worthing as they begin to prepare for the nationals at Loughborough and the 7s at Rosslyn Park in March.

Every member of the squad was an excellent ambassador for the college and the improvement from all was outstanding. This is a talented bunch pulling from Hockey, Netball, Football, Athletics and Rugby itself, being a strong group there is plenty of enthusiasm for more competition I wish them all possible success for the rest of the season.
