we arrived in kingston ready to redeem ourselves after last weeks loss! we were in for another tough test as kingston college are a very good side. we went through our pre game warm ups & were ready for the tip!
from the start of the game we seemed to be more focused than last week! we traded baskets for the opening minutes of the 1st quarter but then stepped it up on the back of an ian marshall 3 pointer to lead 14-7. kingston fought back but at the end of the quarter we were ahead 14-13!
between quarters we spoke about pushing the ball & locking up on the defensive end. we made some subs & took the floor.
the 2nd quarter started & kingston looked the aggressor. we seemed to quickly run out of steam! kingston took a slender lead 28-23 until back to back baskets from jack ryan leveed the score. again kingston surged & took the lead, we had let our tempo drop & had no energy! we rotated players off the bench but again couldn't find a spark! at half time we trailed 34-29! we had been outscored 21-15 in the 2nd quarter.
at the half we spoke about stepping up as we had not played well or hard enough at either end! we lacked poise & passion & had to wake up to get back in this game.
as the 3rd quarter started we picked up the pace. we ran the floor & pushed the ball for easy scores. we looked like a different team & fought our way back into the game! sparked by ian marshall's play (12 points in the quarter) & louis harris' defending we attacked & took the lead. only to see kingston connect on 2 big 3 pointers to tie the game at 50 after 3 quarters!
going into the final stanza we spoke about the game coming down to who wanted it more! with the score tied it was a 10 minute game! we had the momentum & needed to take the game to them.
we opened the scoring in the 4th quarter, another basket from ian marshall but kingston answered. we then rallied & took a slender lead at 58-55 only to see another big 3 pointer made from kingston! again ian marshall got inside & scored giving us a 1 point advantage with less than a minute to play! 60-59! timeout kingston.. we had to get a stop & the game would be ours! defense was needed & cool heads! from the time out kingston managed to score giving them a 1 point lead 61-60! 15 seconds left! time out worthing! we drew up a play for ian marshall to get a shot we had enough time to take the last shot! out of the time out we got pressured into an early shot & even had a rebound chance that popped off the rim! kingston grabbed the rebound & we fouled to stop the clock with 5 seconds remaining! 2 free throws for kingston.. the first shot was missed, we needed to get the rebound & somehow get a shot! the 2nd shot missed & we came up with the ball... with 43 seconds left ian marshall had the ball in his hands & surged towards kingston's basket, he had to force up a prayer from way outside the 3 point line only to see his shot bounce off the rim as the final buzzer sounded! a great effort but we came up short! kingston win 61-60 in a hard fought game! both teams shook hands & game one another loud shouts. we had been very unlucky not to get the win & find ourselves 0-2 on the season! we must again get better before next week.
