Steyning 15 v Worthing 2nd 15

Worthing went to Steyning and were greeted with a small and wet field that considering the conditions held up well. Progress from last weeks poor performance was the target and unfortunately the start didn’t fill anyone with any hope that winning was on the menu.

The kick off was fielded well and recycled however poor decision making the in midfield facilitated a turnover and the initial score for the home side. The two sides traded penalties for the rest of the half and the Worthing side was lucky to be only 8-3 down at the half.

The second half brought a marked change in performance and good leadership from Walker and Hills pushed the visitors into better attacking positions. However it was the home side that scored first with a converted try to take the game to 15-3. Worthing found themselves in a real battle against a much improved Steyning side. This fired the visitors into action and from the 60th minute onwards Worthing got their game together and scored first through the forwards which Hills converted then a good team score leading to Lee going over wide out. Hills was close but unable to convert.

As the performance went the game was definitely one of two halves. The makeshift team worked hard and man points were handed to Wilson, Hatchard and many more for the efforts under injury. The backs managed to get some go forward in the second period and the forwards produced better first phase ball allowing an attacking platform.

At the very end of the match the now rampaging Worthing side nearly grabbed an unexpected victory from a good Steyning outfit however there was no final score and another penalty conceded on the Steyning 5m line put paid to any chance of the win.

Better than last week but more to come I think…..
