we knew heading into todays match up that we would be in for a very very tough test. facing the undefeated Bhasvic team was going to be a great game & it was being played as a double header (league & cup)
from the opening tip we looked ready. we opened the scoring (jack roberts with a smooth lay in) but then the next few plays slipped past us! Bhasvic pressed full court & we stupidly played into their hands! after working on a press break all week in training we seemed to loose our minds & threw Bhasvic the ball repeatedly quickly finding ourselves 19-6 down! Timeout!
we re-grouped & on the back of some great play from ian marshall & a big 3 pointer from louis harris we closed the gap at the end of the 1st quarter to 23-14! we needed to step up
the 2nd quarter was a little tighter we stepped up our defense & slowed Bhasvic down making it tougher for them to score. both teams traded baskets & at the half we were still behind. 39-28! we had played better but had been outscored 16-14 in the period.
at the half we spoke about taking care of the ball & being more aggressive at both ends of the floor! we needed to go on a run!
the 3rd quarter started & we did just that. 3 scores in a row from captain ian marshall closed the gap. another big shot from louis harris & a put back from richard bell made the score 46-41 Bhasvic we were right back in the game. Bhasvic stepped up again & answered our scores but at the end of the 3rd the score was 60-50 Bhasvic! we had outscored them this time 22-21 & we had it all to play for in the final stanza!
Bhasvic came out in the 4th quarter & really put the pressure on! they were awesome at both ends & we found ourselves 18 points adrift! (72-54) ian marshall again rose to the challenge & scored 10 unanswered points to claw us back. we husstled & pressed to try & get the ball back but with time running out the closest we came was 5 points! we fouled to stop the clock sending Bhasvi to the free throw line where they were successful. louis harris ended our scoring hitting a shot as time ran out. a narrow loss 79-72! we had given a great performance but needed to replicate our good "spells" for longer periods! turnovers had handed the game to a very talented Bhasvic basketball team. but many positives can be taken on to the next game.
