Hallsy's Academy Report - Christmas Edition
A further pitch inspection at Gosport gave a more positive outcome and therefore the 1st XI made the short trip along the coast to Gosport Borough FC to play division higher Fareham in the ECFA Cup.
Conditions were "fresh" to say the least, but the pitch was wide and flat, which suits Worthing's style of play. According to Fareham's coach he had "rested" players, but in a Cup competition, surely progression into the next round is key? Anyway the game began evenly with Worthing playing more of the attractive passing football. Worthing again kept the ball well, but seemed to lack the cutting edge in the final third. The best chances of the half fell to Ben Standing, Chris Churchill and a well hit Luke Jearum 25 yarder. Meanwhile at the other end debutant James Fernandez was patrolling his troops well and came out bravely twice to deny Fareham's giant number 9.
The scores were level at half time and the general consensus was that the level of performance was good, but needed to be higher up the park. Worthing needed to ensure that missed chances were not going to haunt them as has happened all too often in the past! Again the second half was a fairly even affair with possession being kept by Worthing, but the ball just not rolling for them in the final third. Chris Churchill worked tirelessly up front and at times was isolated, but had the best chance of the game for Worthing up to that point with an overhead kick that was cleared off the line. As the game neared its final quarter Worthing needed to stay focused, however a long pass was to be their downfall and was finished by their excellent number 8. 1-0. Worthing responded to this well and went close with Sam Mannings and his deflected cross, which the Fareham goalkeeper just held onto. It seemed that straight away Worthing switched off again and in a blink of an eye were 2 down. ANOTHER long ball was not cut out, which led to the Fareham striker finishing from close range. 2-0. Tactics and attitudes had to changed and it could be argued that this is what changed the game. The returning Alex Staines came on for the hardworking Churchill and Matt Dodd replaced Jack Carey in the heart of midfield. Again Worthing pressed, but it seemed to no avail and it looked like Worthing were heading out of their second National Cup competition in as many weeks. However it took an innocuous challenge on full back Ali Giammattei to turn the game on its head. With Giammattei struggling to run off a dead leg he was pushed up front and Worthing resorted to a 4-2-4 formation. With Worthing pressing the game hard Alex Staines made a 30 yard run to close down Fareham's centre half only to clip the Fareham players ankle in the process, which led to his game coming to a premature end and leaving the hosts with 10 men. With time running out Worthing were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area, which was floated in for an easy claim from the goalkeeper. However this was not so easy as while all were turning their backs the ball was dropped and it was Giammattei of all people following up to put Worthing back in the game. 2-1.
Worthing now sensed that they could force extra time and continued to press in their new attacking formation and it wasn't long until parity was restored. Good interplay led to Ben Standing running strongly and crossing for Alex Staines to bag his tenth goal of the season, which led to wild celebrations in the Fareham goal, which caused annoyance in the home dugout. 2-2. This goal ensured that an extra 30 minutes was to be played and 50p was needed to be put in the meter for the floodlights. Both teams gave their all in normal time and this showed as players were beginning to tire. Worthing looked as if they just needed to turn up to ensure the game was won, however it was ten man Fareham that went ahead for the second time with tackles missed the lively centre forward ran through to slot home. 3-2.
In the past heads would have dropped, but this side has more about themselves and have a great team spirit and this was typified in this performance. Giammattei seemed to attract the ball in dangerous areas and this was the case for his second goal, finishing cooly from 8 yards out. 3-3. Worthing again continued to press, but were keeping their shape well with players changing positions to maximise performance. Staines moved to right back and full back George Dowell into central midfield alongside the assured Jordan Clark, which pushed skipper Luke Jearum alongside Giammattei as he was tiring after the shift he had put in. This culminated in Worthing taking the lead for the first time and again it was Giammattiei, who finished exquisitely under the advancing goalkeeper to bag his hat trick. 4-3. Even though the lead was taken Fareham are not in the top league for nothing and it took an outstanding full stretch save from Fernandez to deny the Fareham number 9. This was combined with a great defensive display from the back four with Jack Boxall, moving to left back, Dodd reverting to centre half alongside Andy Heward and the constant running of Dowell. As time passed there was still time for another goal to kill off the game. An excellent run from Dowell and link up with Staines led to the ball being squared to Sam Mannings, who drove the ball hard and low into the far corner of the net. A goal which his performance thoroughly deserved. 5-3.
An awesome team performance from Worthing and one that showed much maturity and responsibility for their own performance, which shows they are all progressing in the right direction. However that ONE BALL needs to be cut out and when it is this team will surely go from strength to strength!
So after the politically correct "dark Wednesday" for the whole Academy last week I must summise that this week must be "orange Wednesday" as on this performance and others in the Academy the future "looks bright!"
A great first term for the Football Academy and long may it continue with complacency and concentration being our only enemies!
Happy Christmas and New Year to ALL!!

Richmond 8 Worthing 35
Rich ‘wheeert?’ indeed. That was the question on a snowy Wednesday afternoon near rugby HQ, Twickenham. With the match being in doubt right up to the KO it was great news to see the game going ahead and
The accuracy of play, focus and determination seemingly a result of the robust training attitude carried through the week and it showed from start to finish. The good beginning continued with the Worthing side stretching the
The scrum again was an area of strength allowing the impressive Lowe to break strongly into the midfield on a number of occasions and create many of the attacking opportunities. One of these was clinically finished in the corner by Clare, showing speed and determination getting to the line before the covering defence.
Metters was having a strong influence on the game as were the forwards dominating lineout ball, scrum and the ruck area where the referee was not always consistent. The conditions were being played more effectively by the

This was again the catalyst for scoring and the lead was extended all the way until the end of the match.
Big performances from all concerned, Lowe, Walsh and Pitchford carried well, Bush and Harcus turned ball over and the half backs managed to get the ball into advantageous parts of the field. The back three was solid playing in behind the strong defensive effort of the mid field trio, all of which leading to the final score of the 35-8 in

The game was played to a very high standard with both players showing very well for the South team despite spending some of the game out of position. After an exciting game it finished 3-3 with Sofia Bouyi scoring the 3rd goal for the South team coolly slotting home from 10 yards.
Both girls where great ambassadors for the South, Worthing College and themselves throughout the day, now is the anxious wait to see if they have made it into the final 18 players.

On a bitterly cold afternoon, the girls took to the court in the BCS Cup.

The centre court was still not firing on all cylinders, however Emma’s shooting was excellent and the defense was working really well, with Briony Short taking some great interceptions. The second quarter ended with
In an effort to try and sort the centre court changes were made with Amy Wilson Hardy coming on at C and Georgia Williams at WA, the opposition came out fired up and put Worthing under pressure on every pass, silly mistakes were made and the shooting accuracy went off, it was a poor quarter which left Worthing with a slender lead of 4 goals at the end of the quarter.
Further changes were made with Nicky and Lizzie coming back on at C and WA.
It was not a convincing win and although the defensive work that we had worked in on training worked well, the centre court movement was limited.
Things to work on after Christmas.
Enjoy the break girls but make sure you keep your fitness levels up.
Worthing College IIXV 24 v The Weald IXV 13
Due to end of term fixture congestion kick off was set for 1100. A heavy overnight frost required a pitch inspection at 1130 to confirm that play was possible.
Worthing dominated the opening 10 minutes with Will Patrick leading the side for the first time. Chris Hubbard and Dan Hills also started brightly at half back. The opening Tempo from Worthing was fantastic and a significant improvement on the dark times of last week! An early score was achieved after a fine multi phase build up.
However at the re-start Worthing failed to retain their level of accuracy and gifted the Weald field position for the first time in the match. The Weald side put Worthing under enormous pressure and would maintain this level for the remainder of the game.
Worthing began to lose their composure and started to make a number of individual mistakes and also to concede too many penalties to establish any quality field position. The remainder of the game was dominated by Worthing infringements and continued pressure from the Weald.
Worthing will reflect on a week that saw significant improvement in standards. Some quality rugby was put together and no member of the squad need be disappointed with their contribution. Stand out performances from Sam Cook, Charlie Laszlo, Chris Hubbard and Dan Hills.
We now look forward to a well earned break and the new year. Also well done to Ben and the IXV today a fine 35-8 victory against Richmond College in the BCS Elite league.

Netball Worthing 1 30 Brockenhurst 34
This was a game we were looking forward to , having been beaten by Brockenhurst in the BCS Regional Final last Tuesday, now was the opportunity to put the record straight.
The girls had been working in training on passing a strong fast ball and moving into space, initially we started well taking a 3-0 lead. Brock were very strong in all areas of the court and didn’t let an early lead from
The second quarter started poorly and we were struggling in all areas of the court, passing was not slick, and heads dropped a little. The quarter ended 12 -21
Changes were made at half time with Caitlin Kay coming on at GD and Emma Mountfield at GA. This galvanized the team and the third quarter was about the netball we wanted to play. Brockenhurst were rocked, shots being missed and discipline gone. The third quarter ended 23-28. The girls were now very upbeat and went out determined to win. The game continued goal for goal with
An excellent second half performance – play like that at the Nationals tomorrow and we have more than a fighting change. Small things will make the difference – concentrate on your own game and not that of your opponents, don’t think about the things you cannot control.
Man of the Match – Bryony Short – Never shirked a challenge – never dropped her head.
Worthing College Netball 2nd's V Brockenhurst College
Before we even started the game the mood amongst the girls was very nervous, with the weather threatening to pour down any second we settled into the game. It was quick and the turnovers were happening all the time, we had to be on the ball with defending and quick passing. The 1st quarter ended on 5 – 11 to them.

BCS Regional Championships
A 7am start on Tuesday 24th November, on a wet windy dark morning was one of the highlights of the
We travelled to Fleet in Hampshire for a days netball against colleges in the British Colleges for the chance to represent the South Region at Loughborough in April.
The weather had improved slightly on arrival, but not ideal conditions.
The draw had given us a tough pool but confidence was high as we had been unbeaten all season. The first game against Godalming was a disaster, defensively strong, the attack was unable to convert the opportunities they had and after half an hour, the game was lost 9 -10.
We then had an uphill battle to win the group. Fortunately the girls rose to the occasion, and after making a change to the attack and giving Emma Mountford her debut in the first team, we beat Reigate College 30 – 3. We went on to beat Peter Symonds which then meant we had to beat Barton Peveril in the last game to win the group on goal difference. Barton Peveril had watched our previous game and were clearly concerned. We went out determined to win and beat them quite comfortably 18-6. We won the group easily on goal difference. This put us in a three way play off for the winner position. By now it was 4.15, dark and the wind and rain had really started lashing down. Our first game was against Basingstoke , who had won poole C, we again started off really strongly and never looked back – winning the game easily 18 – 5.
Now our biggest challenge to date, Brockenhurst, last years National winners who had managed to retain 3 of their U19 players. By now we were all very wet (both teams) however we started well enough taking a two goal lead. Unfortunately we could not maintain this and despite the girls giving everything we lost 18 -6 to the worthy winners, to finish 2nd overall.
Player of the tournament – Two actually – Emma Mountford and Hannah Carey – Outstanding performances from two Yr12 players.
Great day (after the first game) – looking forward to the Nationals next Thursday
Worthing 10 Peter Symonds 0
Windy, wet, sandy and cold, beautiful rugby conditions for the big chaps and not so much for the fleet of foot. The pitch having had lots of work completed on it in the past couple of weeks stood up to the test although would not win any prizes at the ‘Grounds-keeper Awards’ at least not in the aesthetics section.
To the second half and the game mirrored the first with the windward side doing the majority of the attacking putting all the pressure on.
Time was ebbing away too slowly for the home side as they defended wave upon wave of determined and direct Symonds attack. Then after a string of defensive penalties the referee (a late and more than adequate stand in for the non attending official) had no choice but to offer Laszlo 10mins rest for cumulative team infringements. The ensuing kick was missed owing to the terrible underfoot conditions. This was the last real chance the visitors had as time ran out.
More to work on for the
A very tough fixture to come in round 6, congratulations for the win, here is to everyone bringing their A game to training on Monday.
Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 11
The 2nd XI go from strength to strength after casting revenge on the only team to beat them this season, John Ruskin. According to coach Danny Cullip the boys played the conditions well and should have been 6 or 7 to the good with Liam "Des" O'Connor and Andy Herrington being the main culprits of missed opportunities. The scoreline of 2-1 seems close, however Worthing were comfortable at 2-0 with the goals coming from a Thom Taylor header and a Matt Dodd strike. Again I cant praise the lads highly enough with regards to their workrate, attitude and determination to develop and improve so excellent work and long may it last!
All in all a very mixed game day, but all must understand that consistency is key if we are to continue this excellent start of the season for both the 1st XI and 2nd XI teams.
Onwards and Upwards!
Cheers,

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 10
The 1st XI arrived at their destination to find a pitch that all farmers would be proud of for this time of year, the grass was long and divots a plenty. However the ethos was still to pass and move the ball with pace and purpose. Worthing started the half playing into a strong wind and this affected judgement and at times the quality. However the attitude from the Worthing lads was plain to see as they raced into a 3-0 lead at half time. Chris Churchill, Alex Staines and Jack Carey were the scorers.
This half time score was exactly the same when South Downs visited earlier in the season, but this was never added to as complacency set in. In this game however the Worthing players never took their foot off the gas and continued to create chances and score more goals. In between goals being scored both post and bar were struck so it could have been more! The most pleasing site was the players dominating the game and taking responsibilty for their own play. As the score racked up this gave an opportunity for those "modern day" centre forwards to make their case! Defenders Ali Giammattei and George Dowell were moved up front alongside the impressive Ben Standing and all credit to those swapping positions as they never looked to "showboat" and disrespect the opposition. Worthing added 10 further goals in the second half to advance to the next round of this second national competition. The excellent Alex Staines completed his hat trick, skipper Luke Jearum also weighed in with 3, George "Shearer" Dowell bagged a brace, Ali Giammattei and the dominant Jordan Clark also netted, however the goal of the game (arguably) was dispatched by Andy Heward, whose 30 yard drive thundered in off the cross bar for the final goal of the game. 13-0.
A well disciplined performance from all players because at times Newbury players were being a bit naughty to say the least with their tackles and off the ball antics. This team are really developing and if they keep their consistency up who knows what may happen.
The 2nd XI have stretched their unbeaten run to 7 games thus claiming their place in the County Cup semi finals. Coach Danny Cullip felt that the lads under performed in spells, but by getting the right result shows the sign of an accomplished team. Imberhorne were brushed aside 4-1 with the goals coming from Phil Charman, Liam "Des" O'Connor, Matt Dodd and Thom Taylor. The boys have been nothing short of excellent up to this point and are now only one game away from a chance at picking up the first piece of silverware for the College since 2007.
Again a great set of results from the Football Academy, however all need to make sure that feet are firmly planted and work rate continues to ensure that our season runs later into next year, rather than being all over by Christmas!
Cheers,
Hallsy

A chance for both squads to support each other this afternoon when both teams were drawn away in East Grinstead in the Sussex Knock Out Cup.
The first match of the day saw the 1st team take on Sackville in a lovely sports hall, just made for netball ! The score line at quarter time of 16-5 flattered
An easy win for
The 2nd team had the rough end of the stick, playing outside on a slippery surface in very windy conditions at Imberhorne school, kicking off at 3.30pm. We knew it was going to be a tough game as a number of their players play Regional Netball and the 1st team beat them by a very narrow margin last yr in the semi final of the cup. At the end of the 1st quartr we were losing 8-4 and felt we were still in with a chance. Sadly Imberhorne started the 2nd quarter well and the game began to go beyond Worthings reach as the quarter ended 22 -7. Changes were made and the girls were told to go out and compete for every ball, things improved and the third quarter was much improved. Imberhorne stepped up their game again in the 4th and ran out winners 44-18.
We are once again likely to play them in the semi finals of the cup at Worthing. A game the first team will no doubt relish.
Well done both sets of players for the support shown in both games.
A pleasure to be with.

Canterbury contested the ruck and played to the referee very well and constantly challenged Worthing possession. The Canterbury 15 would also be a constant threat throughout the game.
Worthing played with the slope and wind in the first half and would score all of their points in the first 35 minutes. Worthing's first score came from a solid scrum with Jack Metters working the ball blind and capitalising on the space created. The try was also converted by Jack.
Worthing's next two scores would come from Stephen Brown who finished well on both occasions beating a total of at least 6 defenders. Both scores where unconverted and fine examples of the style of play Worthing are working to achieve.
Worthing's final score came a minute before half term when Tom Lowe finished a very strong Worthing set piece. The final try of the half would be converted by Jack Metters and the half time score was 22-14.
Playing in to the wind in the second half Worthing played some of their best rugby of the season. Both the lineout and scrum were dominant for Worthing throughout the game and these would provide excellent first phase possession for the Worthing backs. The referee became increasingly involved in the second half with the breakdown becoming very scrappy. The scoreless second half was concluded with a full length attack from Worthing which would be turned over close to the line.

We arrived at Chichester College in good spirits and ready to play, after being delayed by a training session in the hall we started the match 20 minutes late, and the first thing we noticed was the quite large amount of support that the Chichester girls had in the hall. But we certainly were not ready for this kind of support.
The first quarter went well with the
With no changes for the 2nd quarter we started well, and so did the Chichester girls they started to up their game and that was a bit of a shock for us, and then the support from the side lines started, but it was unlike any support we had ever heard. It was not cheering, it was jeering! On several occasions they were asked to be quiet by their teachers but this was not happening. Also they did not seem to understand that the court was for the players and not for their feet! But despite this the
We ended this quarter on 27 – 11.
At half time the talk was psychological more than anything, the girls needed to block out the noise (not support) that was coming from the side lines, they needed to just concentrate on the game and listen to the whistle.
