Worthing 2-2 Lewes Sussex Downs (after extra time)
(Worthing won 5-4 on penalties)
For the third year in a row Worthing College won the Sussex under 19’s County Cup thanks to a dramatic 5-4 win on penalties. After falling 2-0 down inside the 1st 15 minutes despite having the majority of possession Worthing faced an uphill battle. Two break away goals by the lively Lewes forward gave them something to defend. Worthing kept moving the ball and trying to play the right way and this brought them some joy on the half hour mark when Meg Priest scored from a Sofia Bouyi corner. The pattern of the game continued with Worthing having most of the ball and much more territory but Lewes defending well by putting pressure on the ball late.
2-1 half time.
A change of shape by Worthing to 4-3-3 to try and take advantage of the space in the wide areas allowed Worthing to gain more joy and create more chances against the stern Lewes defence. The 2nd goal didn’t take long to come when good work by Danielle Lane saw Maddy Emmerton put clean through to finish and make the game 2-2. From then on there only looked 1 team who where going to win as Lewes tired and they struggled to apply the same pressure and defend as well as they had. Unfortunately Worthing where unable to take anymore chances the created.
2-2 Full time
Extra time
Both teams visibly tired in extra time and neither side was able to find the back of the net.
Penalties
Sofia Bouyi, Sophie Frost, Kerry Sexton, Danni Lane and Jordan Lucas where all successful from the spot and after Lewes missed their 2nd penalty it was enough to see Worthing lift the cup.
