Worthing College IXV in British Colleges National Elite Cup and League Play Off Semi Finals

Worthing College will host two of the nations rugby elite in the coming weeks. The season is coming to an exciting climax with both Filton and Hartpury due at the Leisure Centre for what promise to be very exciting games. Worthing are on the back of good form at U19 level with a 100% success rate in all competitions and a settled side made up of strong units. For many of the lads these will be the last home games in college colours as the national finals are to be played at a neutral venue.

We look forward to seeing you at the Leisure Centre for KO at 1500 this Wednesday.

Worthing Make Rosslyn Park 7s Semi Final

Proud, surprised, elated, excited and energised all of the thoughts and emotions after two days of tough rugby 7s competition in London. Worthing set off on Thursday morning on a trip into the unknown on the Disco bus of destiny.

Worthing were in a pool with Farnbrough, Peter Symmonds and Amman Valley from Wales and the format determined that only the top team form each group would move forward to the quarter finals the following day. This coupled with the lack of experience in playing 7s was enough to predict a really tough days work and possible non return for the second days events but that was for later on.

Worthing kicked off at 11am v Farnbrough, laying down plenty of good tackles, scoring even more trys running out 59-0. This was an interesting start and made for plenty of confidence going into the second game v the Welsh visitors.

Valley came into the game having fought out a tough draw with Peter Symmonds and that pointed towards a very challenging encounter for Worthing. So to the start and Worthing were clearly up against a strong, organised, skilful and experienced side that had played lots of 7s rugby before. Worthing went down by two scores and were looking down the proverbial barrel of a big fat gun.

But excellent performances from the whole side created a last play score by Short converted by Leeming to snatch a well earned draw and set up the winner takes all game against Symmonds.

So pass out the ammunition and lets go to war. Worthing did not really look at the races and leaked points by the bucket load. Again the gun made an appearance and again a closer inspection of the said proverbial metallic object made for unhappy viewing. But a team with character doesn’t know when quit so Worthing played with heart, miles and miles of heart and struggled back to beat Symmonds. Excellent performances from everyone, a great team spirit and enthusiasm for what was to most a new sport helped Worthing to the show.

So day two Worthing had been drawn against a very strong Colstons side that was very impressive on day one of the competition and had cleared all before them with little trouble. So was it to be a 4 hour round trip for just 14mins of rugby? Well all in good time, but Cinderella was definitely going to the ball and she was looking pretty good and didn’t fancy turning into a pumpkin any time soon.

Quarter finals on a big Rosslyn Park pitch had a few of the girls nervous (excellent), some excited and but all ready to do their part. Kick off came and it was time to ‘Fix up and look Sharpe’ and that they did. Worthing went down to two trys in the first half fortunately only one was converted. So at half time a few worlds of encouragement from the coach and the girls went back out with a zesty tang chasing a place in the semi final. So the last 7mins of play in the competition or so one may have thought?

Worthing heaped pressure on to the opposition and scored the first try (12-5 Colstons) Leeming hit the post with the conversion but Worthing were on the score board. So ‘Big Mo’ was firmly with Worthing as the last minute of the game began. More and more pressure was pilled on and Worthing scored the equalling try and conversion. Full time whistle and with the score 12-12 and the Sue Barker question was on every ones mind “What happened next”. Well ‘Golden Point’ was the shout more effort, energy and enthusiasm needed to get one of these sides over the line and into the Semi final.

Worthing went directly onto the offensive taking advantage of a couple of indifferent officiating decisions, this leading to more pressure in the opposition’s 22m and great press defence put Worthing further onto the front foot and then the decision that turned it all. Penalty 15m out in front of the horns, Leeming asked if she could go for the shot and that she did, slotted between the posts and that was all she wrote. Worthing win 15-12 with a golden penalty kick.

That was the performance of competition by the girls and in reality was the final for Worthing. Hartpury the eventual winners of the competition were the semi final opponents and they were a match to far. The experienced rugby players winner through 45-0 Worthing not having the technical or tactical ability to live with the Gloucester side. So Cinderella did go to the ball and did eventually lose her lavish dress and slipper, but she is still a real beauty in my eyes.

Well done girls and thanks for all of your efforts across the two days.

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 17

The Worthing College Football Academy based themselves at the new home of football, Hill Barn with both Men's and Women's side taking on opposition from around the south. Pensioners and dog walkers alike were treated to a feast of football with the weather for once being kind and the only rain around was that of GOALS, GOALS and GOALS. In all 22 goals were scored across the three matches and Worthing contributed to 14 of these strikes. The quality of football from all games was plain to see and wouldn't look out of place at the top table of Sussex County Football.

It was a great experience having both Men's teams playing side by side, so it gave me a chance to observe how well the 2nd XI have developed this season and on the basis of their performance on Wednesday they could easily challenge a number of teams at 1st XI level, which is great credit to Danny and all the players who have been involved. The 2nd XI hosted Uxbridge and needed to get back on track after a couple of lacklustre performances. The rust seemed to be shaken off at the 2nd XI came out 6-0 winners with another 3 efforts disallowed. The scorers on the day were Liam "Des" O'Connor, Zaki Rahman and Phil Charman, who all hit braces. A special mention must go to Aiden Dayer, who had a goal ruled out, which would have been his first for the Academy and a well deserved goal that will be when the time comes.

Meanwhile the "rain" was now torrential with the 1st XI putting eight past their opponents, local rivals Sussex Downs. After his first successful attempt of sports reporting Worthing stopper James Fernandes again takes up the match action...

First Half

For Worthing College this would be their 2nd game in 3 days so the team knew they would have to dig in deep to pull out a result today. The start of the game couldn’t have got any better for Worthing College as Herbert put them 1-0 up in the space of minutes. Following on from this a couple of minutes later Mannings done well down the left and put in a deadly ball only for Herbert to pop up again and finish nicely 2-0. Worthing were playing decent football which lead to their third in 10 minutes, Good play by Jearum and Clark winning tackles and it was Jearum that played a pin point pass to Mannings on the wide left who cut inside and used his pace and slotted it under the keeper 3-0. Worthing began not to keep the pressure on and this lead to Sussex Downs scoring, the left winger cut inside and played a ball into their striker who turned Boxall and fired past Fernandes 3-1. Worthing let Sussex downs come forward again for 10 -15 minutes but good defending from all the back 4 players (Giammattei, Staines, Heward and Boxall) kept them at bay. 4th goal of the half came from Clark winning a tackle in the midfield and playing the ball out wide to Standing who threading the ball to Herbert who beat one player and finished past the goalkeeper in a one on one situation. 4-1

Second Half

Worthing came out to the second half knowing that the job was still not done, so the team began to play keep ball and work on and off the ball. Eventually they were rewarded when Herbert got his 4th goal of the game breaking through and beating a couple of players and finishing. 5-1. Confidence was high from Worthing and manager Dave Hall made his first sub by introducing Dowell who was swapping for the hard working Mannings. Dowell immediately made the impact by getting on the end of a cross to tap in a well crafted Worthing move. 6-1. Good organised defending was key today and it showed in the confidence of all 4 defenders. On the other hand Fernandes was forced into making a low save when the defence were caught napping but the corner was cleared and Worthing were back in control. From the break Worthing worked it down the right Boxall doing well to find Standing who finished from the cross nicely. 7-1. Dave Hall made his final sub by bringing off play maker Clark and introducing Carey. Carey was already involved with play by pulling off a nice one 2 with Giammattei who fired the ball up field for Herbert to chase, no options for the striker who laid it back to Dowell who was lurking around 20 yards out and hit a shot straight into the top corner. 8-1.

To conclude a "wonderful" Wednesday for the Football Academy with the 2nd XI seemingly back on track and the 1st XI now unbeaten in three matches, scoring 12 and conceding just 2 in that time. Maybe we should give you boys a rest more often!!

Lets keep this run going!!

Onwards and upwards,

Hallsy

Worthing 2nds 18 Brockenhurs 31

Worthing went to the New Forrest and started to take care of business in this semi final clash in the southern region of the performance competition. A great start with all of the pressure being provided by the Worthing college wolf pack, but huff and puff as they would the Brockenhurst house of bricks stood firm. This up until a great bit of counter rucking by Walsh got Worthing the first 5 pointer of the game.

More effort and all of the territory but no more points to show for the efforts. Disappointing as the visitors played all of the rugby and the home side were struggling with the pace of the game.

At the half Worthing looked at building on couple of areas, the main one being the attacking through the mid field where Jordan and Stirling were the class of the field. Hills was running the game well and Hubbard was working very hard to get the forwards over the ball and get the backs moving.

With the start of the 2nd period Worthing had a slope and gusty wind to contend with, but no fear the visitors were playing some very nice rugby and looking as if they could deal with anything thrown their way.

Not so much…… there was a period in the second half where it all went a little bit northwards.  4 unanswered scores in 20mins put paid to the Worthing charge, or did it? From somewhere some of the chaps got their game faces back on. Trys were scored by Worthing getting themselves back into the mix with the front row really starting to take care of business, Burgess, Chatfield and Wigzell doing a little bit of a demolition job being ably supported by the back five. Birch and Patrick won their share of line out possession and the well balanced back row was destructive, combative and organised (although White did go missing on occasion).

A good decision to take an easy 3 pointer with 5mins to go left the score 24-18 to the home side and Worthing continued to pressure up the home D. unfortunately on the last play fo the game Worthing were turned over and conceded the counter punch that could not be answered.

Final score Brockenhurst 1st 31 Worthing 2nd 18. A great effort by the Worthing side with vital and valuable contributions made by all concerned and a mega thank you to those travelling players that did not get to take the field your efforts especially welcomed.

So what can we taken from this nearly story? A tale of close but not close enough or we are just not good enough. Well I’d venture to the former, chances to win but not taken, players playing well but not well enough, a few mistakes cost the place in the final against Collyers.

So in conclusion here is the naughty little secret, player responsibility, to take control of the game when given the chance, to condition themselves during the off season and maintain with good nutrition and focus during the season.

Winners win, losers lose and blame someone or something else and quitters inevitably quit being forgotten and lost to history. Pride dictates we bounce back showing pride and Wingmanship to each other and take responsibility so we can return victorious again.

Congratulations and good luck to Brock, the second of two great games this year between us both, lets hope we catch a break on the flip side.

worthing V west kent

we arrived in west kent to find that the leisure centre we were playing in had a very small court, the out of bounds was the surrounding walls. it was going to be a tight affair.
running scores were impossible to work out from the jumbled score sheet that was kept. however, individual scoring was kept.
the game was a close affair, we started well & gained an early 10 point advantage in the opening period but west kent rallied. we subbed freely & used our whole bench. west kent hung around & did just enough to stay close. we played some great team basketball & made it look easy in spells. but at the half we only had a slender 6 point lead.
again we made changes & switches on the defensive end but west kent had found their feet & crept into a 3 point lead. we had fallen asleep & went away from what we had been doing well, moving the ball & cutting to their hoop.
we were down heading into the final quarter. but we kept our heads & took the game to west kent on both ends. we frustrated them with our defense & forced them into silly mistakes. we took the lead in the final minutes & west kent lost their cool! 3 of their players picked up technical fouls & louis harris calmly stepped up to the free throw line & sealed the win for us. going away..85-74! a good team win & performance.

Hallsy's Academy Report - Monday Night Special

Due to the adverse weather conditions this winter Worthing College Football Academy 1st XI still have 8 games remaining, therefore this extra Monday game took place against top of the table and unbeaten City College Brighton and Hove. Stand in skipper for the day and goalkeeper James Fernandes takes up the action...

First Half

Worthing knew that they had a big test ahead of them in this match with the quality that Brighton City College have. Due to suspensions, illness and unavailability manager Dave Hall had to use some of the 2nd team players to boost his squad. Worthing started to first half brightly knocking the ball around nicely and winning headers and tackles etc. Brighton City College obviously are a very talented group of players and they started to get into gear as the half went on. Brilliant work by Clark in winning headers against tall opposition, Nemeth with his quick feet moved towards the left hand channel, pulled off a nice pass with Standing and from this Nemeth received it back moving away from his marker and winning a free kick just past the half way line. With a strong wind behind Worthing in the first half they knew they had to test the oppositions defence, from this Giammattei stepped up confidently to take the free kick and delivered a superb ball over the top and there was Dowell leaping to nod it past the goalkeeper – Worthing 1-0 Brighton City College.

Brighton City College by now had stepped up a gear pushing men forward more often but Worthing’s centre backs Colwell and Staines stood firm and played a very good game. The opposition kept coming and Fernandes had to come out confidently to catch 2 crosses to calm things down, throughout the first half the shape of the back 4 was top class. Eventually the goal came for the opposition when good movement down the right channel lead to their striker picking the ball up and blasting past Fernandes – Worthing College 1-1 Brighton City College. There was a big call for the referee during the build up of the goal because one of the Worthing defenders feels as if they were fouled in the build up which lead to the striker scoring. The game was starting to fire up as tackles were beginning to fly in from Giammattei, Colwell, Staines and Clark but all successfully winning their tackles. Right Winger O’ Connor was working hard to help Taylor out and managing to get up with play as well to help striker Charman which showed great work rate. Charman showed off his strength by holding off their centre back and pulled a shot wide of the post. End of first half.

Second Half

The message from manager Dave Hall at half time was to keep battling throughout the half and get a result. Worthing had the disadvantage of playing against the wind this half so they knew that they needed to keep tight at the back. From the whistle to start the second half the Brighton City College central midfielder tried a speculative shot from inside his own half but was caught comfortable by Fernandes. Worthing started the second half as well as they did in the first, passing the ball nicely. Standing and O’Connor were making brilliant runs down the left flank and the right flank which were picked out a couple of times nicely by the three midfield players Nemeth, Clark and Dowell. As the half went on passes starting to string together from Brighton City College, their captain beat 2 Worthing players and pulled off a shot which Fernandes was equal to by putting the ball around the post. Worthing progressed and Colwell pulled off a brilliant block to deny the opposing striker, from this Clark picked up the ball and thread through a brilliant ball to Nemeth who beat one man and sent O’Connor on his bike after the ball down the right wing, O’Connor pulled of a excellent cross which Nemeth ran onto and headed past the goalkeeper – Worthing 2-1 Brighton City College.

Worthing had now moved up a gear with the encouragement of people watching from the sidelines and Dave Hall. As the game moved on Dave Hall made his first substitute by bringing off work horse Standing and replaced him with Rance. On the other hand Brighton City College knew that they had to get back into this game and started to flood men forward and it took an amazing block on the line by Taylor to deny the oppositions left winger. Worthing were now under pressure and needed to get more of the ball and play their own type of football, manager Dave Hall made another substitution by introducing Herbert who replaced Charman, Herbert went straight to the striker position. He made a big impact by scoring about 10 minutes since coming on when the ball was played through to him and Herbert running on to it 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper and slotting it under him – Worthing 3-1 Brighton City College. Dowell had moved into a more defensive side to the midfield and winning tackles well. Taylor and Giammattei offered pace down the left and right wings, whilst Staines and Colwell stood firm to deny any more attacks from the opposition from Brighton. Full Time

As you can tell from the report another fantastic team performance from the lads. The players that came into the squad were excellent and this gives me a few headaches for the remaining games. The Academy as a whole has developed so much this season and great credit must go to each Academy member for the efforts and abilities throughout the season. However we are now 2 wins out of 2 and now must go into the next game (Sussex Downs) full of confidence.

Lets keep this run going!

On a sunny March afternoon we made our ways to Godalming, that is myself and the College 2nds Rugby Team, I would be an " An outsider looking in!" my son had played rugby for Worthing for 7 years so I was not quiete a complete novice, and probably would understand most of what I saw. What I did see was a completely commited team, who had at least 50% of the game and didn"t deserve to loose by such a big margin , to many mistakes and handling errors cost the Worthing side dearly. It was a shame for a side to loose so heavily to a team who Worthing had matched in many areas, the Worhing scrum and maulling was better than Godalming, and the forwards worked tirelessly. A special mention goes to Jo Walsh who was superb as  Captain, and also I must mention Dowglass and Wigzell who had worked so hard for to little reward well done chaps!

On the whole a entertaining match to watch with some great rugby from Worthing at times, behaviour on and off the pitch was fantastic, so well done Ben and the Rugby Academy!

Netball 1 - 35v Bhasvic 30

This Wednesday saw us travel along the coast to the East for a change to local rivals Bhasvic in the BCS league – a win would secure the league for us so victory was extremely important. We knew that they had some good players with 4 of them playing at regional level so we looked forward to a closely fought game.

With the 2nd team not in action, a squad of 11 was taken – with Emma Luke and Cassie Birch coming into the 1st team squad.

Shooting has not been our strong point of late so the starting line up was changed with Hannah Carey coming in at GA with Amber O’Brien GS, Laura Finlay at WA, Nicky Gatland at C, Briony Short at WD, Caitlin Kay GD and Mele Stubbs at GK.

With changes to the normally starting line up, a slow start was to be expected and there were no surprises there – unfortunately the passing generally was careless and shooting stats were not good. Defensively we were sound and ended the quarter 9 – 6 up. Georgia Williams came on at GA and Lizzie Northeast at WA and the movement was better, although the shooting was still not at the level required. The passing was still careless however again the defense were strong and we extended our lead, 19-10 at half time. Decided this time to change the defense to give Cassie a start at first team level and Hannah Carey at GD, by taking Briony and Caitlin off we lacked aggression in defence (Hannah and Cassie – a definite area to work on)  although both players worked hard. We won the third quarter by 1 and went in 29-19.

With the shooting still not at the level required, it was time to bring on Emma Luke for her first start in the 1st team – not an easy thing to ask of anyone but Emma was up for it and Amber moved out to GA. Caitlin was brought back into defense with Briony taking over at centre from Nicky Gatland. It is amazing how long 15 mins is and how quickly a comfortable 10 goal lead can vanish. Bhasvics tails were up and we were soon only winning by 2. We could have cracked but fortunately the girls stood firm and the shots started going back in – with 1 minute left we had a 5 goal lead and the coach was able to relax.

An interesting day from the coaches point of view. Having spent this week working on timing and passing its back to the drawing board as this was clearly not successful.

Well done for holding your nerve girls.

This result does mean we have won the BCS League prior to playing Chi on 21.4.10

Women's Football Academy County Cup Final

Worthing 2-2 Lewes Sussex Downs (after extra time)

(Worthing won 5-4 on penalties)

For the third year in a row Worthing College won the Sussex under 19’s County Cup thanks to a dramatic 5-4 win on penalties. After falling 2-0 down inside the 1st 15 minutes despite having the majority of possession Worthing faced an uphill battle. Two break away goals by the lively Lewes forward gave them something to defend. Worthing kept moving the ball and trying to play the right way and this brought them some joy on the half hour mark when Meg Priest scored from a Sofia Bouyi corner. The pattern of the game continued with Worthing having most of the ball and much more territory but Lewes defending well by putting pressure on the ball late.

2-1 half time.

A change of shape by Worthing to 4-3-3 to try and take advantage of the space in the wide areas allowed Worthing to gain more joy and create more chances against the stern Lewes defence. The 2nd goal didn’t take long to come when good work by Danielle Lane saw Maddy Emmerton put clean through to finish and make the game 2-2. From then on there only looked 1 team who where going to win as Lewes tired and they struggled to apply the same pressure and defend as well as they had. Unfortunately Worthing where unable to take anymore chances the created.

2-2 Full time

Extra time

Both teams visibly tired in extra time and neither side was able to find the back of the net.

Penalties

Sofia Bouyi, Sophie Frost, Kerry Sexton, Danni Lane and Jordan Lucas where all successful from the spot and after Lewes missed their 2nd penalty it was enough to see Worthing lift the cup.

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 16

After the previous two weeks of cup action both Academy teams were back in ECFA League action with the 1st XI at home to John Ruskin and the 2nd XI travelled to Kingston. Training had somewhat been disrupted this week due to injury and illness, which had led to 13 travelling with the 2nd's and 12 with the 1st XI.

The 1st XI needed to get back on track after the last couple of "unlucky" results that they had suffered and coach Dave Hall had to shuffle the pack with Alex Staines reverting to left back, Jack Carey moving into centre half, Ali Giammattei moving into the holding midfield role and the returning Dave Herbert playing just behind the striker. This meant that skipper Luke Jearum moved into the central striking role.

Worthing began the game reasonably well with wingers Sam Mannings and Ben Standing getting in behind their opposing full backs, but unfortunately their crosses were met with John Ruskin heads rather than the host sides. The first main chance of the game saw a team move, which involved George Dowell, Giammattei, Jordan Clark, Sam Mannings, Herbert and finally Jearum, whose clean strike was well saved by the visiting goalkeeper. As the half progressed the away team began to find their feet with some neat passing football and their midfield pairing seemed to have too much time on the ball. However Worthing began to provide a better position defensively with centre half pairing Andy Heward and Jack Carey reading the game well to cut out any through balls that came their way. Chances were at a premium with both sides attacking their opponents final third, but unable to pull the trigger. Half Time 0-0.

Players have been overplayed recently and this was beginning to show from the first half performance. Therefore the "thinking footballer" was needed in the second half to ensure that a positive result was gained with the least amount of exertion. Unfortunately Worthing were all guilty of giving the ball away cheaply, which led to wave upon wave of John Ruskin attack, which were duly thwarted by the backline of Dowell, Heward, Carey and Staines. When called upon Worthing stopper James Fernandes was again in inspired form by showing courage to come and punch away from set piece situations.

Then came the turning point in the game. Dave Herbert played a lovely long pass through to the "onside" Mannings, only to be adjudged to be in an offside position. From the resulting free kick holding midfielder Giammattei seemed to be all over his John Ruskin opponent. Amazingly to the John Ruskin bench no foul was called and with the defence out of position Jordan Clark played a pinpoint pass through to skipper Jearum, who took the ball in his stride and finished cooly into the corner of the net. 1-0. Celebrations were lively and discussions heated, especially between the John Ruskin bench and some Worthing players. However that old adage "concentration" was now more key than ever if the three points were to be bagged. After the deadlock had been broken this led to more pressure from the visitors with again Worthing just about coming up on top. Their best chance falling to number 9, who unmarked from a free kick found the chest of Fernandes not once, but twice. Up the other end Worthing had their chances to wrap up the game with Heward missing the target with a header and Herbert having a goal chalked off for guess what... offside. The final whistle came to the relief of a very tired Worthing side, however another great team performance and three points in the bag will make all sleep easy tonight.

Meanwhile in Kingston the 2nd XI went down 3-2 with Thom Taylor and Liam "Des" O'Connor on the score sheet. Coach Danny Cullip described the performance as "disappointing", however the squad as a whole have been hit with injury after injury and combining this with over playing had led to mass fatigue setting in, so all players should be commended on their attitude and desire to play.

To conclude with games coming thick and fast the Academy will be stretched to its limit, therefore its players need to be honest with themselves and make sure that they prepare for all their physical activities the right way to ensure that energy levels are channelled in the right direction.

Time to rest and recoup I feel is the next focus.

Onwards and Upwards,

Hallsy

match report 17/3/10

worthing V kingston

we knew kingston would be a tough match for us today having lost to them at their place by 2 early in the season. we had to bring our A game & get a good start
from the opening tip we looked a step slow & kingston took advantage of us. for once we had a bigger line up but we couldn't manage to get the ball inside! kingston scrambled very well on D & took it to us on offense! we fell behind 18-15 after the first 10 minutes. we needed to step up!
we made changes going into the 2nd quarter & changed up our defense. kingston still couldn't be slowed down. we were off the pace & falling behind. we subbed & rotated but couldn't find a spark! louis harris scored 13 points in the 2nd but again we were outscored 25-23 in the period. we were down 43-38 at the half.
at the half we spoke about what we needed to do to get back into the game. we had to stop the ball as kingston were running us off the court & we needed to rebound & push it back at them.
as the 3rd quarter started we looked a lot better on D! we got the ball out of their hands & tried to push it back at them. a 3 pointer from richard bell closed the gap but kingston then stepped it up & took over. we were again outscored, this time 26-17! finding ourselves down 14 points 69-55!
heading into the final stanza i told the guys to play full court & scramble to get the ball back. we started well & stopped the ball on D turning it into fast break scores for us. jack ryan hit the boards well & finished the put backs. we were on the come-back but were always chasing the game! kingston kept a cool head & the closest we came was 6 points! we had played better in the 4th & had outscored kingston 25-19 but the great effort hadn't been enough! the final score was 88-80 to kingston! who had played the better basketball on the day, hats off to the better team.
a sad way to end our competitive season but many positives can be taken from our performance.

Hallsy's Academy Report - County Cup Special

As promised here is the much anticipated match report from the 2nd XI's County Cup Semi Final, with guest reporter Iain "9 toes" Haggart taking up the action:

The second team had the biggest game of their season this week in the county cup semi final against the Weald. The team may not have been here because we made the run up to the final hard for ourselves in the early rounds by having to go 2 goals down against St Wilfreds and Thomas Bennett until we began to play football. The quarter final was more like ourselves and we comfortably beat Imberhorne 4-1 to progress to the semi’s. This match was the chance for the football team to win their first trophy and on our ability we were quietly confident of progressing into the final.

The venue was the fortress of Worthing United where the 2nd team have been undefeated this season and we were determined to keep that record. The conditions were not the best for us because of a strong wind which held the ball up and on some occasions blowing it backwards prevented us from using the chip over the top for our fast strikers to run onto. The game began in a tight fashion with both teams not a lot of chances and it being a gritty midfield game. The first chance though fell to the Weald number 9. A long ball was played down the line, however their number 10 was in a offside position, the problem was that he deliberately blocked Jack Buchannan from getting near the number 9, and wasn’t penalised for what was a clear obstruction. However Kieron Gillard made an excellent block to deny the number 9. (These types of saves and blocks were to continue throughout the match in what was an excellent display from the Worthing keeper.) This was the only real major chance of the half, with only a few half chances falling to both sides in what was a tight match.

The second half was pretty much the same with the wind playing a deciding factor and caused problems with set pieces for both sides, with it either blowing an in swinging corner out of play or very close to going into the back of the goal. There was though a rather comical moment in the half when man of the match Liam Dunbar managed to get shot by a sniper on a hill and comically rolled over backwards much to the amusement of the bench. Certainly a you’ve been framed moment and it could be easily sent in because it was caught on camera! A nervous moment came in front of the Worthing goal in the last minute from an in swinging corner. Gillard came to catch the ball but the wind blew it away from him and fell to a weald player only for it to be cleared off the line by Dunbar.

0-0 was the final score in full time and the match went to extra time and after extra time it was still 0-0. (extra time was the same as the normal time with both teams unable to break each other down + I can’t be bothered to write in detail what happened because it wasn’t that interesting)

It was penalties. Captain Matt ‘Ginger Prince’ Dodd under advise from the cameraman chose to go first to put pressure on the Weald. Thom Taylor, Tomas Nemeth, Andy Herrington (who had earlier forgot his squad shirt and had to have it delivered by his mum), Kieron Gillard- who took the keepers head off nearly and Phil Charman all stepped up, slotting their penalties away with ease. The same happened to the Weald although Kieron almost had two of their penalties, just flicking the tips of his gloves. It went to sudden death and Paul Jackson was the first up and put his penalty away, same for the Weald. Next up was Lewis Humphrey and credit to him for stepping up. He stuck the penalty well but sadly failed to hit the target and missed. All the pressure was now on the Weald number 5 to send his team to the final. Quoting Zaki Rahman ‘he’s left footed he can’t take penalties’ this was true and he struck the bar and missed! Lucky boy Lewis! The rest of sudden death went through the whole Worthing team and Thom Taylor was ready to step up again. However after Liam Dunbar scored his penalty the Weald number 4 stepped up. After number 5 missed earlier surely he would score? NO, he scuffed it into the post and prompted exuberant celebrations from the Worthing team on the field and in the changing rooms. Coach Cullip was proud of the boys and said it was deserved after the effort we have put in over the season.

So a first final for the Men’s football and a chance to win the football team a piece of silverware for the team.

Role on the final lads!!

Good luck in the final lads. You thoroughly deserve a chance of some sliverware after all your hard work and efforts, this goes to both sides this season as you have all been a joy to work with!

Cheers,

Hallsy

Versatility Tournament at St Vincents

Wednesday 10 March saw the 1st and 2nd Netball Team travel together to a new tournament for them at St Vincents in Hampshire. A total of 23 teams had entered from the Hampshire League which was split between A & B teams.

The weather was sunny but a bitting cold wind cooled the temperature considerably and after a couple of mishaps with Tori and Laura on the sat nav we arrived at St Vincents.

The tournament was well organized and the students at St Vincents played an active role in a very successful day, as runners, time keepers, crowd control to name but a few.

The girls relished the chance of playing different positions and the teams got off to very different starts. The first team won every game until the last which proved to be a disaster for them, losing 3 -1. This meant 3 teams in the group had lost 1 game so it came down to goal difference and we missed out on the semi final by 1 goal.

The 2nd team lost their first two games but then went on to win the next 5 and draw 1. Theirs was a round robin tournament and they finished a very creditable 3rd.

The girls had a great time and got on well with each other, great support and a few surprises for the coach. I am now aware Amelia Stubbs and Lizzie Anderson Easey make creditable shooters and Georgia Williams can intercept balls.

The day finished in McDonalds at Chichester where the girls treated the coach to a Sweet Chilli Chicken Deli (having already bought me a coffee at the tournament) !

A pleasure to take out for the day.

Players of the day

1st team Amelia Stubbs

2nd team Lizzie Anderson Easey

PS Emma Luke is now to sit in the front and navigate on all future occasions.

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 15 (I think!!?)

Both Worthing College Academy sides were in action this week with the 1st XI travelling to Mid Kent in the ECFA league and the 2nd XI in their biggest game of the season to date, a County Cup Semi Final vs. The Weald at the home of football that is Worthing United.

The 1st XI needed to shake off their hangover from the previous weeks epic National Cup game at York. However preparations were affected by many injuries creeping into the Academy, with George Dowell missing out and with Chris Churchill being suspended, Phil Charman and Tomas Nemeth taking their place in the 2nd XI it meant that coach Dave Hall had to enter the transfer market and put together some late deals to ensure that the squad was 13 strong.

The game itself started very evenly with Mid Kent's long ball style being blocked out by the back four of Ali Giammattei, Jack Boxall, Jack Carey and Andy Heward with good positional sense and timing. As the half grew on Worthing began to stamp their authority onto the game with Jordan Clark and Luke Jearum switching play at will. Wingers Ben Standing and Sam Mannings taking on their full backs at pace and Matty Rance was working hard to get on the ball and get Worthing moving forward. Alex Staines was holding up the ball well and used it intelligently to ensure that possession was kept. However all of this work was taking place in the middle of the park and therefore needs to higher to provide goalscoring opportunities. These were now beginning to come with a free flowing move ending with the ball being squared to Sam Mannings, whose shot was saved by the Mid Kent keepers legs. Worthing were really starting to dominate and the best chance of the game came towards the end of the half. A driven 45 yard pass by Heward found Staines who killed the ball out of the air acrobatically only to rush his shot and the chance had gone. 0-0 at half time.

Confidence was high as the second half began, but Mid Kent seemed to start the brighter with a succession of corners. Again the long ball tactic was used, but this time it was the great positioning of keeper James Fernandes to thwart another Mid Kent attack. This seemed to wake Worthing up again with the passes seeming to return. Staines was harshly called offside from a Clark pass and Staines crossed for Mannings whose effort was deflected wide. This should have allowed Worthing to kick on and take the lead, however the opposite happened. Jack Carey failed to clear a long ball, which led to the right winger slotting home. 1-0.

Worthing responded well to this set back and from the kick off almost levelled. Mannings was put through only for the ball to be stuck under his feet at the vital moment. The sucker punch came with 15 left. The Mid Kent right winger again found himself free to finish cooly. 2-0.

To many the game would have been over, but not to the Worthing players. Again the passing stepped up a level and chances came. A Matty Rance shot, Luke Jearum one on one and a Sam Mannings volley were notable efforts, but unfortunately for Worthing the scoreline stayed the same.

At times it seems as if I'm repeating myself, the players are playing some great football but get punished at vital times. However I'm again proud of every one of them as they still try to play the game the right way, which is a testament to their abilities and attitudes. I'm sure that if we continue to play the way we are and take our chances the results will begin to match our performance levels.

Onwards and upwards,

Hallsy

Worthing 2nd 29 BHASVIC 10

A good showing from Worthing in this encounter on a sundrenched wind swept BHASVIC Centenary Stadium, this like the Home of rugby at Worthing Leisure Centre was rapidly bringing itself in line with premiership standards as both colleges have a long term plan to be playing in the top flight of the English game.

The home side were short of 3 players and while this was initially disappointing it gave the Worthing side a chance to get plenty of game time and its here on our little journey that I must congratulate and thank Fitzgerald (full game), Jordan (three quarters), Hart (half game), Lee (half game), White N (quarter game) for their sacrifice and sportsmanship for running with the opposition side.

Game on and Worthing were getting it on like ‘Donkey Kong’ running the ball from all parts with Parker getting the side moving well, Anderson made yards with every carry and Luke had learned to play with the rest of his team making him a much greater threat with the ball.

Within a 4 minute period in the first half the visitors laid the rugby smack down with every player making it happen. The video will show some excellent running with the ball, better rucking than in previous weeks and an unexpectedly good line out performance as part of an excellent weeks rugby.

The back row was working well together with Laszlo carrying well from first phase, White P making many tackles and slowing ball down and Cook getting in the face of the half backs. Patrick and Birch were making it very difficult for the opposition line out. Another best game yet for the props of Wigzell and Smart both getting through some good work and Smart even getting on the show boat with a cheeky little back door offload.

Hills was taking care of business with ball in hand and bringing Pumfrey and Hart into the game, the video will show an excellent execution of T-Bone and a great try at the end.

My words can not do justice to the trys scored today so I think that the DVD should take care of that, but it would be remiss of me if I were not mention that many players put their hats into the ring for next weeks county cup final and I like and respect that.

A great week of training and top effort by both teams, congratulations to all.

5-a-side Competition at Queens School

Worthing entered two sides into the competition and they went into opposite groups. With the side split evenly both managed to qualify to the out of the groups and team ‘A’ lost their semi final 4-2 to Huntington College after a pulsating game conceding two goals in the last couple of minutes. Team ‘B’ qualified for the final after beating Queens ‘A’ 4-2 after falling behind to an early goal.

The final between Worthing and Huntington was a very fast game with Huntington winning out 4-2 again. Good afternoon for all squad members and a great warm up for their county cup final next week.

college basketball playoff quarter final

worthing(3) V bhasvic(6)

having been drawn againts the undefeated bhasvic team we knew we were up for a very tough opening round. we have played bhasvic before & knew what to expect, tough full court pressure & smart team offense.
as the game tipped off we looked slow & bhasvic punished us. as we thought they showed a full court press & we played right into their trap! we were outscored 18-7 in the opening ten minutes just the bad start we talked about not having! again we were in a hole againts a very good team. (louis harris had 5 points & ian marshall the other 2)
the 2nd quarter started & we attacked another 2 scores from louis & ian! but we couldn't contain bhasvic & we traded hoops! we needed stops & we couldn't find a spark. again we were outscored in the period, this time 19-13 all points again coming from ian marshall & louis harris bar a lay in from josh mountifield. we were down 37-20 at the half!
at halftime we spoke about speeding bhasvic up & getting them out of their sets as they had done to us! we had to step up to get back into the game!
the 3rd quarter started & again we traded hoops. ian marshall fought hard & scored 10 points in the quarter. we just couldn't string together enough defensive stops. we had some great effort on ball from lucy uncles & matt sharp & we did outscore bhasvic 18-16 in the 3rd but still found ourselves down 53-38 heading into the final stanza!
heading into the 4th i told the guys to throw everything at them, we had to pressure them full court to make something change
we started well, mutalib habib & gio corpuz used their speed to annoy the bhasvic guards & we came up with a couple of great stops & quick scores! sadly the closest we got it back to was a 10 point game (65-55) bhasvic kept their heads & beat our press! lucy unles hit back to back jump shots to keep our score ticking over & again we outscored them in the quarter 24-22 but the damage had been done in the opening period & it was too big a gap to close! the final score was 75-62 to bhasvic. hats off to a better team on the day, i'm sure they will be eventual play off winners!

A big week for Women's rugby

Peter Symonds was the Wednesday venue for the regional round of the BCS 10s competition and Worthing travelled full of energy with a strong squad of 16 ready and willing to give their all in the chase for glory.

The day was to consist of game against Peter Symonds and the very highly fancied Yeovil side that came to the competition on the back of a great win against Truro. Worthing had a warm up game against Brockenhurst where all players got into the action.

So to the first of the competition games 3 teams 2 progress to the national finals, so to Yeovil, pass out the ammunition lets go to war. Worthing had much of the early possession and territorial advantage however the west country side were strong in the rebuttal of each advance and looked dangerous on the counter attack. Towards the end of the first half Priest went over taking two defenders with her, T-R-Y time. In the second half Worthing went at it hammer and tongs, the collisions were big and the gains small until some excellent work from the entire team- 10 phases and Gatland finished off in the corner, not the prettiest try at the ball but certainly a graduate of the event. So 10-0 and more to come saving the best not for last but this delicious little number came from a scrum 5m from the Worthing try line, Wilson-Hardy hit Leeming from the base of the scrum, Leeming then threw the miss pass to Priest, she attacked her opposite number, showed her a clean pair and off loaded to Cave. A foot race ensued up to the 50m line, where Cave was felled but managed to hit the supporting Priest immediately offloading to Gatland and then we were off the races. Gatland high stepping into the opposition half breaking one half tackle and gassing the rest of the cover defence. Consulting the mirror we could now see this really was the fairest try of them all.

But not done yet, Worthing ploughed through the now overly frustrated Yeovil side and one more try was earned by great continuity and understanding of the laws of the game and the captain dotted down in the corner. A resounding 20-0 win and a marker was set, bring it all or nothing.

Yeovil beat Symonds and that set up the all or nothing clash with Worthing to the victor the spoils. In the best celebrity ‘Death match’ tradition ‘lets get it on’. Symonds played as if there was no tomorrow because there wouldn’t be if they didn’t get the win. So play they did and score they certainly did, 10 unanswered points in the first half. Not the way the story was supposed to play out. Here is where the story takes a big turn, at the half Worthing made some changes and it was clear what was needed- 12 points in 10 minutes, possible, yes, probable, no, but this is where heroes are made. Situations like this don’t build character they reveal it and these girls brought it by the bucket full. One then two unconverted scores and with the final play of the game Eager touched down between the horns and Leeming took care of business 17-10. through to the national finals, the last 8. The date for the finals has yet to be confirmed but rest assured the Worthing College Women’s side will be there and be keen to take care of business again.

(Wilson-Hardy, Leeming, Richardson, Cave, Priest, Potter, Longhurst, Lane, Frost, Eager, Finlay, Gatland, Northeast, Short, Kay, Moore)

So Sunday morning comes 8.30am to be exact and off to the fantastic 7s tournament at Christ Hospital. The sun was out and so were the big guns in both the Men’s and Women’s competitions. Worthing started their campaign with a greatly different roster to that of the successful 10s team but were full of excitement and my ears stopped bleeding from the noise they called music just in time for kick off. Epsom College (eventual cup winners) laid down some education proving every day is a school day dispensing the knowledge by 17-0, we weren’t in Kansas anymore that was for sure.

So on to SEEVIC another fancied side that could bring the heat so lets to it, Worthing scored first, while not unexpected not as scripted by the Essex side. Worthing were put back into their box by losing 15-10 great performance though, maybe 7s was for us?

Then it was time to drop the hammer St Bedes who had brought an energetic squad full of girls playing for the first time, no mercy here 28-0 Worthing a great 4 try display with Leeming getting the conversions. Momentum was with the army of 9 although their number reduced as man down (Parker had a shift at the sports centre) but the rest would soldier on into the final group game. Wisbech GS from Cambridge, a fantastic encounter two sets of warriors going toe to toe in a gladiatorial battle to the finish….of the game. Worthing 15-0 winners and into the Plate competition as did Wisbech. 3rd in the group was good enough and an excellent effort seeing as the squad was a fraction of the size of the others at the tournament.

Worthing made short work of Sutton Vale in the semi final scoring 3 trys in a pretty one sided affair. To the final by now the effects of their efforts had taken their toll and Worthing had less of a bounce and more of bumps and bruises with nearly every member of the squad carrying some kind of injury. Deterred not by the physical ailments inspired by the occasion the last girls standing took the field and made and excellent fist of defending for all they were worth until the last play of the half where Wisbech crossed for an unconverted try. This laid symmetry firmly at the door as Gatland had her try to square the game disallowed with the last play of the game.

(Leeming, Short, Parker, Potter, Kay, Gatland, Northeast, Anderson-Easy, Moore)

Hugely disappointing but in all incredibly rewarding, the pain will heal and we will have to leave glory for another day but maturation in defeat and the journey travelled to be the prize for a weeks efforts.  I am proud of the efforts of all of the girls that played this week and look forward incredibly to the national 10s and Rosslyn Park 7s which will be another step forwards in our development.

As a last piece of good news Amy Wilson-Hardy has been selected on the bench for the England U20s to play France next weekend, congratulations.

Hockey Sixes Tournament

                                      So near yet so far!
This was the first year that Worthing had been able to field  2 teams in this traditionally strong competition, it was always going to be tough for the "B"s though it was a good experience for them and hopefully lessons were learnt.
Sixes is a completely different game compared to eleven a side, and the team that is able to master the difference will be the team that will do well. Some of the sides that I thought would do well struggled, they just didn't cope with sixes, and in the end I was pleased with our 3rd placing for the "A"s.
To win this tournament would have been great, but this was our best performance in the 6 years that I have been involved with the college side, and the standard gets higher each and every year, so well done Worthing!
I was very proud when commented by Alan Grey that what a nice and well behaved bunch Worthing were, and even prouder when "dusty" Miller commented on the great hockey skills that the boys had, it was like being a very proud father of fourteen!

Worthing College IXV 23 v SEEVIC IIXV 0

Worthing College advance into the British Colleges elite cup after a convincing victory dominated by well organised, physical and committed defence. Man of the match Greg Bush scored both the Worthing tries, had an outstanding game contesting ball at the breakdown and provided excellent link play throughout. Jack Metters kicked both conversions as well all three penalties and conducted play well at fly half. The IXV now face Richmond college on Wednesday 10 March at the Worthing Leisure Centre pitch (KO 1430) in what promises to be another high quality game of college rugby.

Hallsy's Academy Report - National Cup Special

Worthing College Football Academy headed for their most important game ever in its history on Tuesday morning to face York College in the last 8 of the ECFA Cup. An overnight stay was the only option to ensure that the players minds and body were at their peak for a 12 noon Wednesday kick off. The lads took the 6 hour bus trip in their stride and had an opportunity to stretch their legs in the evening with a training session at the palatial facilities that York College had to offer. The evening culminated in a team meal at a local italian restaurant, where the banter was the only thing flowing. The morning brought a more focused mood and as all sat down to their Olympic breakfast the magnitude of the task was beginning to sink in. Are we good enough to sit at the top table of English College Football? All was to be revealed during the most important 90 minutes in some of these young players lives.

The venue for this occasion was the modern 3G surface at the very impressive York College, which should suit Worthing's passing football as it was wide and flat. The match throughout was played at a tremendous pace with both teams playing short at every opportunity, however Worthing still seemed to be at the hotel with Lenny Henry and were behind inside 5 minutes. A ball round the corner was latched onto by the impressive York number 9, who then went onto finish cooly under James Fernandes. 1-0.

This could have been the trigger for York to press home their advantage, however it was the visitors who took the initiative by playing the attractive football that we now come to expect from a Worthing College side. The central trio of Tomas Nemeth, Jordan Clark and skipper Luke Jearum were pulling the strings with widemen Ben Standing and Sam Mannings stamping their authority on the game with direct runs and skills a plenty. Now the chances were beginning to come. Striker Alex Staines began to get into the game and was played through only for the York full back to get back and make a challenge before Staines was about to pull the trigger. The next chance was never too far away in this period with Mannings, Staines, an Andy Heward header and volley all came close to breaking the deadlock for the visitors. Another mazy run from Standing could have resulted in a penalty only if the tricky winger wouldn't have been so honest and gone down under the challenge. The best chance of the half fell to skipper Jearum, who headed powerfully only for the home goalkeeper to tip his effort onto the bar. There were many more chances, but none were taken and with the York goalkeeper in inspired form was it going to bite Worthing in the backside. With the game heading for half time Worthing were still looking to break down the great York wall, but this was to be our undoing with a quick break allowing the also impressive number 11 to run on and finish well, which led to wild celebrations from the 100 strong York crowd. 2-0.

Goals conceded at bad times were costly, but Worthing had shown that they do belong at this level by outplaying their opponents for most of the half. The general feeling at half time was that the next goal was crucial and were confident that it could come Worthing's way.
The second half was as non stop as the first, but without the number of chances. The turning point of the game came when full back Ali Giammattei's run was halted prematurely by a York defender only for the referee to wave away the protests. This was then followed by the opportunity to get back into the game. The home goalkeeper for once made a mistake and palmed out a Nemeth cross with the rebound falling to Jearum. The ball was struck with power only for it to be stopped on the line with the second rebound there for the taking no one took up the offer and the chance was then gone. The question "what if?" definitely springs to mind.
As the game wore on the pace was beginning to catch up with both sides as the game became extremely stretched. Both sides created more chances, but Fernandes was more than a match for what was thrown at him and at the other end a Jordan Clark mis headed and Tomas Nemeth free kick were what Worthing could muster.

The final nail in the coffin came just before coach Dave Hall was to resort to the 3-3-4 formation to get back into the tie. Andy Heward was adjudged to have body checked the York number 10 and the referee no hesitation in giving the penalty kick. The kick was struck well by the York captain and Fernandes almost got his hands to it. 3-0. Before this Phil Charman came on for the excellent Ben Standing for some fresh legs and after the horse had bolted Chris Churchill came on for Ali Giammattei the final change saw Jack Carey came on for the skillful Tomas Nemeth.
Throughout the game Worthing never threw in the towel and this was typified by full back George Dowell who work up ill on the morning, but still put in an efficient performance at right back. Worthing even had further chances with Luke Jearum's header being the closest. So the game came to its end. The hosts knew they had a scare and to some back at Worthing College they may see this as a beating, however those at the game will know that it was far from the case. However it was same old, same old with chances not taken and concentration lacking at crucial times. So in conclusion the top table is there for the sitting so here's to next year!

Onwards and Upwards,

Hallsy

Worthing College Team; Fernandes; Dowell, Boxall, Heward, Giammattei; Clark, Jearum(c), Nemeth; Standing, Staines, Mannings. Subs; Charman (Standing, 67), Churchill (Giammattei, 78), Carey (Nemeth, 89), Rance (Injured in training)

P.S. On reflection sitting on the bus on the way home the boys need to and should be proud of their efforts whatever others may say because those who were there witnessed a high level of football with Worthing arguably playing the better football for periods and with my philosophy of attractive, attacking football it is a credit to them that they have taken this on board. They are a credit to themselves, their families and the college, an absolute joy to coach.
Attention must now move to the equally talented 2nd XI, who are in the County Cup semi final vs. The Weald next Wednesday and if they play as well as they have done this season there could be a first cup final for the College since 2007. Good luck to all involved.

Cheers,
