Worthing college V Uxbridge college

we had a score to settle as we left for Uxbridge.. they had handed us our first loss in the opening game of the season!

we knew they had a very talented play maker so we had a few trick defenses up our sleeve to throw at him in order to revenge our loss!

from the opening tip we looked the aggressors. baskets from ian marshall & jack ryan got us rolling early & our defense was awesome! we held Uxbridge to two first quarter scores. (only 4 points in the opening 10 minutes!) it was amazing. we in turn netted 24 points & were on fire! louis harris capped it off with a deep 3 point basket! 

the 2nd quarter was a different story. Uxbridge found their feet & rallied! but we kept our heads & replied with tough scores of our own! this period saw a lot of points & some great basketball from both teams! we fought harder & out hustled Uxbridge & went into halftime with a commanding lead.. 51-36! we had been outscored in the 2nd 32-27 but had weathered the storm & stayed focused on the task at hand!

the 3rd quarter was a battle. both teams stepped up their defensive intensity & it was hard to score at either end! we slowed the game down as time was on our side. Uxbridge tried to hurry us up but we handled the pressure very well. guards josh mountifield, ollie hunt & matt sharp all stepping up & handling the ball with confidence! our defense had been tough we held Uxbridge to 11 points in the quarter adding 15 ourselves to push the lead to 66-47 heading into the final stanza!

we looked poised in the 4th quarter & answered every Uxbridge basket with great plays of our own. every member of the team gave an awesome effort at both ends of the floor & contributed to keeping us ahead! back to back great driving scores from tanaka munjeri gave us a real boost giving us a 20 point cushion. the win was in the bag & we played hard to the final buzzer. 2 big 3's from man of the match louis harris & a free throw from jake robinson sealed the deal! we had outscored Uxbridge 21-16 in the 4th quarter for a comfortable win! final score 87-63!

BCS Regional Championships

A 7am start on Tuesday 24^th November, on a wet windy dark morning was one of the highlights of the Netball Academy calendar !

 

We travelled to Fleet in Hampshire for a days netball against colleges in the British Colleges for the chance to represent the South Region at Loughborough in April.

 

The weather had improved slightly on arrival, but not ideal conditions.

 

The draw had given us a tough pool but confidence was high as we had been unbeaten all season.  The first game against Godalming was a disaster, defensively strong, the attack was unable to convert the opportunities they had and after half an hour, the game was lost 9 -10.

 

We then had an uphill battle to win the group. Fortunately the girls rose to the occasion, and after making a change to the attack and giving Emma Mountford her debut in the first team, we beat Reigate College 30 – 3. We went on to beat Peter Symonds which then meant we had to beat Barton Peveril in the last game to win the group on goal difference.  Barton Peveril had watched our previous game and were clearly concerned. We went out determined to win and beat them quite comfortably 18-6. We won the group easily on goal difference.  This put us in a three way play off for the winner position.  By now it was 4.15, dark and the wind and rain had really started lashing down. Our first game was against Basingstoke , who had won poole C, we again started off really strongly and never looked back – winning the game easily 18 – 5.

 

Now our biggest challenge to date, Brockenhurst, last years National winners who had managed to retain 3 of their U19 players.  By now we were all very wet (both teams) however we started well enough taking a two goal lead. Unfortunately we could not maintain this and despite the girls giving everything we lost 18 -6 to the worthy winners, to finish 2^nd overall.

 

Player of the tournament – Two actually – Emma Mountford and Hannah Carey – Outstanding performances from two Yr12 players.

 

Great day (after the first game) – looking forward to the Nationals next Thursday

Windy, wet, sandy and cold, beautiful rugby conditions for the big chaps and not so much for the fleet of foot. The pitch having had lots of work completed on it in the past couple of weeks stood up to the test although would not win any prizes at the ‘Grounds-keeper Awards’ at least not in the aesthetics section.

 

Worthing played with the wind in the opening half and made many trips into the opposition 22 however converting pressure into points was harder than possibly expected. It took 20mins before the territory was used effectively and 5 points were put on the board as Hart went over on the right hand side. Double was unable to convert the extras owing to the gale and the lack of solid footing.

 

Worthing huffed and puffed but the Symonds house was made of brick and didn’t fall.

 

To the second half and the game mirrored the first with the windward side doing the majority of the attacking putting all the pressure on. Worthing rebutted all advances and made sporadic forays into the opposition half. One of these voyages was looking like stagnating in a quagmire of mediocrity then the flame haired Double danced his way through the first line of defence and stood up the last two defenders making it across the line with a final lunge. This brightened up an otherwise turgid attacking display from both sides as the conditions dictated an abrasive and combative forward battle.

 

Time was ebbing away too slowly for the home side as they defended wave upon wave of determined and direct Symonds attack. Then after a string of defensive penalties the referee (a late and more than adequate stand in for the non attending official) had no choice but to offer Laszlo 10mins rest for cumulative team infringements. The ensuing kick was missed owing to the terrible underfoot conditions. This was the last real chance the visitors had as time ran out.

 

More to work on for the Worthing side all of whom made valuable contributions to the win. Stand outs being Roberts, Harcus and Sercombe. The final defensive effort showed just how far this group of players has come on field.

 

A very tough fixture to come in round 6, congratulations for the win, here is to everyone bringing their A game to training on Monday.

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 11

Not enough people "maning up" and stepping up to the plate was the sorry story that was the 1st XI this week, in what potentially is a season defining week for them. Players rested and out of position aside the Worthing players who took to the pitch never looked to take responsibility in very challenging conditions against a decent, but not outstanding Central Sussex side. Mistakes were aplenty in this match up, however it was the visitors who never let it phase them and as a result came away with a 4-0 victory. Changes were made, but this was too little too late. Possibly the team had one eye on the "big one" this Friday, but some didn't do themselves any favours to be apart of that team. A definite kick up the backside for the much developed 1st XI, but on a positive note they can rectify this within 48 hours and I have faith in every one of them to a man to do so!

The 2nd XI go from strength to strength after casting revenge on the only team to beat them this season, John Ruskin. According to coach Danny Cullip the boys played the conditions well and should have been 6 or 7 to the good with Liam "Des" O'Connor and Andy Herrington being the main culprits of missed opportunities. The scoreline of 2-1 seems close, however Worthing were comfortable at 2-0 with the goals coming from a Thom Taylor header and a Matt Dodd strike. Again I cant praise the lads highly enough with regards to their workrate, attitude and determination to develop and improve so excellent work and long may it last!

All in all a very mixed game day, but all must understand that consistency is key if we are to continue this excellent start of the season for both the 1st XI and 2nd XI teams.

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 10

After spending week 9 of the Academy programme in the spinning studio it was time to replace the Lycra for more traditional footballing attire. Both squads had important games for certain reasons. The 2nd XI were at Worthing United taking on Imberhorne in the County Cup Quarter Final, whilst the 1st XI had their longest away trip of the season so far, away at Newbury in the ECFA Cup Preliminary Round. Both teams went into their games full of confidence, but no one would have expected the outcomes of these games before the start of play.

The 1st XI arrived at their destination to find a pitch that all farmers would be proud of for this time of year, the grass was long and divots a plenty. However the ethos was still to pass and move the ball with pace and purpose. Worthing started the half playing into a strong wind and this affected judgement and at times the quality. However the attitude from the Worthing lads was plain to see as they raced into a 3-0 lead at half time. Chris Churchill, Alex Staines and Jack Carey were the scorers.

This half time score was exactly the same when South Downs visited earlier in the season, but this was never added to as complacency set in. In this game however the Worthing players never took their foot off the gas and continued to create chances and score more goals. In between goals being scored both post and bar were struck so it could have been more! The most pleasing site was the players dominating the game and taking responsibilty for their own play. As the score racked up this gave an opportunity for those "modern day" centre forwards to make their case! Defenders Ali Giammattei and George Dowell were moved up front alongside the impressive Ben Standing and all credit to those swapping positions as they never looked to "showboat" and disrespect the opposition. Worthing added 10 further goals in the second half to advance to the next round of this second national competition. The excellent Alex Staines completed his hat trick, skipper Luke Jearum also weighed in with 3, George "Shearer" Dowell bagged a brace, Ali Giammattei and the dominant Jordan Clark also netted, however the goal of the game (arguably) was dispatched by Andy Heward, whose 30 yard drive thundered in off the cross bar for the final goal of the game. 13-0.

A well disciplined performance from all players because at times Newbury players were being a bit naughty to say the least with their tackles and off the ball antics. This team are really developing and if they keep their consistency up who knows what may happen.

The 2nd XI have stretched their unbeaten run to 7 games thus claiming their place in the County Cup semi finals. Coach Danny Cullip felt that the lads under performed in spells, but by getting the right result shows the sign of an accomplished team. Imberhorne were brushed aside 4-1 with the goals coming from Phil Charman, Liam "Des" O'Connor, Matt Dodd and Thom Taylor. The boys have been nothing short of excellent up to this point and are now only one game away from a chance at picking up the first piece of silverware for the College since 2007.

Again a great set of results from the Football Academy, however all need to make sure that feet are firmly planted and work rate continues to ensure that our season runs later into next year, rather than being all over by Christmas!

Worthing College Netball 1st 51 Sackville 13- Netball 2nd 18 Imberhorne 44

A chance for both squads to support each other this afternoon when both teams were drawn away in East Grinstead in the Sussex Knock Out Cup.

 

The first match of the day saw the 1st team take on Sackville in a lovely sports hall, just made for netball ! The score line at quarter time of 16-5 flattered Worthing as the attack was very flat, poor circle rotation and the balls into the final third were very poor. Words were exchanged at quarter time but although Worthing increased the lead to a comfortable margin at half time, things had not improved greatly in attack, pleasingly the defence look solid. Changes were made at half time, with Cassie Birch making her debut in the 1^st team and she took her opportunity well at WD. Worthing continued to score but without ever really getting going. A final change was made at the end of the third quarter with Hannah Carey partnering Amber O’Brien in attack and Elouise O’connor making her debut also in the 1^st team.

 

An easy win for Worthing 1 but things need to improve big time for any hope of winning the BCS Championships next Tuesday in Fleet.

 

The 2^nd team had the rough end of the stick, playing outside on a slippery surface in very windy conditions at Imberhorne school, kicking off at 3.30pm. We knew it was going to be a tough game as a number of their players play Regional Netball and the 1^st team beat them by a very narrow margin last yr in the semi final of the cup.  At the end of the 1^st quartr we were losing 8-4 and felt we were still in with a chance. Sadly Imberhorne started the 2^nd quarter well and the game began to go beyond Worthings reach as the quarter ended 22 -7. Changes were made and the girls were told to go out and compete for every ball, things improved and the third quarter was much improved. Imberhorne stepped up their game again in the 4^th and ran out winners 44-18.  

 

We are once again likely to play them in the semi finals of the cup at Worthing. A game the first team will no doubt relish.

 

Well done both sets of players for the support shown in both games.

basketball academy match report 18/11/09

Worthing college V Sussex downs Eastbourne

 

always a tough match up Eastbourne have a big line up & a disciplined game plan! also their home-court is extra long & an icebox

we won the opening tip, scored the first basket & didn't look back! the 1st quarter was good for us as we scored freely & our zone defense held Eastbourne at bay! we led after the first 10 minutes 19-13

the second quarter was a different story. Eastbourne found their feet & knocked down some shots! we kept fighting & rotations from our bench helped us stay level. at the half the scores were tied at 33! we had been outscored in the 2nd 20-14!

at the half we spoke about raising our intensity & pressure on the defensive end! we had to step up..

the 3rd quarter started & we went on a run! 3 buckets from louis harris & 2 from ian marshall gave us a little cushion! our defense kicked in & we held Eastbourne to 9 points. scoring 19 points ourselves we lead 52-42 heading into the final stanza

the final 10 minutes was a tough test as Eastbourne tried everything to get back to level terms. we couldn't break away further & both teams traded scores. a big 3-pointer from louis harris (man of the match) sealed the game for us down the stretch! we were actually outscored in the 4th quarter 13-12 but came out on top with a good win! 64-55 Worthing!

Worthing College IXV 24 v Canterbury High IXV 14 (A)

Worthing continue their unbeaten start to the season with a good win away to a well coached Canterbury side. The game was dominated by a very strong wind that blew straight down the pitch which made kicking and passing very difficult.

Canterbury contested the ruck and played to the referee very well and constantly challenged Worthing possession. The Canterbury 15 would also be a constant threat throughout the game.

Worthing played with the slope and wind in the first half and would score all of their points in the first 35 minutes. Worthing's first score came from a solid scrum with Jack Metters working the ball blind and capitalising on the space created. The try was also converted by Jack.

Worthing's next two scores would come from Stephen Brown who finished well on both occasions beating a total of at least 6 defenders. Both scores where unconverted and fine examples of the style of play Worthing are working to achieve.

Worthing's final score came a minute before half term when Tom Lowe finished a very strong Worthing set piece. The final try of the half would be converted by Jack Metters and the half time score was 22-14.

Playing in to the wind in the second half Worthing played some of their best rugby of the season. Both the lineout and scrum were dominant for Worthing throughout the game and these would provide excellent first phase possession for the Worthing backs. The referee became increasingly involved in the second half with the breakdown becoming very scrappy. The scoreless second half was concluded with a full length attack from Worthing which would be turned over close to the line.

Next week Worthing play Peter Symonds in round 5 of the Daily Mail. The game is at the leisure centre and scheduled to kick off at 1400.

Worthing College 17 v Hurstpierpoint 0 (A)

Worthing College travelled to Hurstpierpoint for the Daily Mail U18 cup round 4. Hurst went into the game having won 8 of their 11 fixtures so far this season and with Worthing unbeaten a well contested game was on the cards. 

With the pitch heavy from overnight rain a free flowing game was going to be unlikely. Worthing played down the slope in the first half and dominated the early attacking possession. Hurst however counter rucked at a level not experienced by Worthing so far this season and would continuously disrupt Worthing's attacking momentum. Harry Green (Man of the Match) scored the first try for Worthing, after a fine 1v1 tackle Harry got back to his feet quickly turned over possession and drove hard for the corner, the conversion was missed. The second Worthing score came from Kane Bone after physical work from the Worthing forwards that created a blind side that was attacked accurately and the scoring pass was a spectacular offload from Stuart Stirling making his return from injury.

The second half would see Hurst dominate possession but with the Worthing defence increasing in physicality and composure the gain line was defended with a new found intensity that was the focus of the Worthing pre match preparations. Worthing's final try came from an interception from Chris Double, Chris completed a 60m run to the line with an acrobatic dive, the conversion was a formality, 17-0. The final 15 minutes were disrupted by injury and ill discipline from both teams.

Round 5 next and with the opponents set to be Brockenhurst or Peter Symonds a fiercely contested game is guaranteed. The game will be played on Wednesday 25 November at Worthing Leisure Centre.

Worthing 7-1

Chichester were well worthy opponents well matched and potentially the game could have been a close won , but today Worthing played Academy  Hockey and "All the hard work and training paid off", Eleven players played as a team ,and on the day would have been very difficult to beat by any opponent, the passing was great the movement was great, ball speed was excellent, their was no way that Chichester were going to win this game. Everyone, I am glad to say had their moment of brilliance, and their coach , who i know very well ,and who plays National League for Havant, commented at the end of the match "What a good side the Academy was!" a proud moment! Well done lads!
