Worthing College Netball 2nds V Chichester College

Worthing College 2^nd Netball Team travelled away for the first time this season to Chichester College.

We arrived at Chichester College in good spirits and ready to play, after being delayed by a training session in the hall we started the match 20 minutes late, and the first thing we noticed was the quite large amount of support that the Chichester girls had in the hall. But we certainly were not ready for this kind of support.

The first quarter went well with the Worthing College girls demonstrating good passing, defence and using the whole court. Also some very good shooting from the two Emma’s. We led 17 – 4.

With no changes for the 2^nd quarter we started well, and so did the Chichester girls they started to up their game and that was a bit of a shock for us, and then the support from the side lines started, but it was unlike any support we had ever heard. It was not cheering, it was jeering! On several occasions they were asked to be quiet by their teachers but this was not happening. Also they did not seem to understand that the court was for the players and not for their feet! But despite this the Worthing College girls continued to play good Netball and tried to block out the inappropriate behaviour from the side lines.

We ended this quarter on 27 – 11.

At half time the talk was psychological more than anything, the girls needed to block out the noise (not support) that was coming from the side lines, they needed to just concentrate on the game and listen to the whistle. With a change of centre at half time, we went back on court with a determination to win. The girls started to go for every ball, they worked hard to keep the game going in their favour. This quarter ended on 40 – 20 to Worthing College, and demonstrated that the noise from the sideline did not effect their game plan.

In the last quarter we had one more change, the hall was hot, the noise was still inappropriate but the girls had to work hard for just 15 more minutes and win the game. The girls were told to go for every ball, defend every pass from them and make Chichester work hard and use the whole court. The Worthing girls did this, but Chichester also had the same game plan, in this quarter Chichester scored 3 more goals than us.

The game ended on 46 – 29 to Worthing College.

On a additional note the Worthing College 2^nd Netball Team acted so professionally throughout the whole match, they were up against almost hostile behaviour from Chichester College but they rose above this and played their game and proved that even with inappropriate support and comments coming from Chichester College they would not allow this to get to them.

Chichester College spectators also did not understand that an umpire (me) needs to walk along the court to as the play goes along, tripping over their feet, standing on their feet and them actually standing in the way throughout the game is inappropriate and rude.

So…congratulations Worthing College 2^nd Netball Team you represented the College to the highest standard and you did me, the college and yourselves proud.

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 8

After the half term break and a good week of training under their belts both Football Academy sides went into their respective matches looking to continue their good start to the season. Both teams were going to be tested with the 1^st XI at a very strong City College and the 2^nd XI traveling up to Uxbridge.

The 1^st XI started their game well, but were shaken when going 1-0 down very early on. A long through ball was not cut out and this led to the powerful number 9 rounding keeper Kieron Gillard and passing the ball into an empty net. 1-0. In the past Worthing have been guilty of getting frustrated after going behind, however this was certainly not the case in today’s encounter. Worthing took the game to their supposed more illustrious opponents and had more of the possession and arguably outplayed City College. The short, sharp interchanging of passing was a delight to see and this led to a number of chances. Luke Jearum, Paul Jackson, Alex Staines and Ben Standing all had chances to level the scores. It wasn’t too long however before the scores were level. Paul Jackson, who had been a late call up, continued his excellent hot streak in front of goal by coolly finishing under the advancing home goalkeeper. 1-1. That was how the score stayed until half time and this represented the very even nature to this match up.

Going into the second half Worthing knew that they needed to keep up the attitude and work rate to ensure a positive result. The home side were obviously wounded by the visitors positive first half performance and they came out fighting. However the defence were standing strong with Gillard making a couple of good saves that bounced right in front of him. Andy Heward, Jack Boxall, George Dowell and Ali Giammattei were disciplined enough to keep the home side at bay and be mature enough to play forward passes to begin Worthing attacks. Disaster struck midway through the second half though when a long ball was again not cleared and it was the number 9 yet again who took full advantage. 2-1.

Again Worthing showed excellent team spirit and attitude to continue to play passing football with only the final pass eluding them. The introduction of Sam Mannings definitely had an impact and Alex Staines had one of the better chances to equalize. However it wasn’t to be but the lads need to hold their heads high and be proud of their efforts and the way they conducted themselves against one of the teams who will be challenging for the ECFA league title this season.

Meanwhile the 2^nd XI were extending their unbeaten run to 5 games with a 5-2 victory over Uxbridge. Goals came from Tomas Nemeth, Zaki Rahman, Thom Taylor, Phil Charman and the returning Ezio D’Ercole. Coach Danny Cullip was pleased with the victory, however he felt that the performance was not quite up with the standards that the lads have been setting recently. However if you can get a team who wins when playing not at their best, that can only be a positive and shows signs of a good team.

Well done to all involved and good luck to those playing Friday in the ESFA National Cup against East Berkshire.

Worthing College IXV 38 v Collyers IXV 6 (H)

Worthing College continued their fine run of results and prepared well for next week’s U18 Daily Mail Cup round 4 fixture away against Hurstpierpoint College. With significant changes to the starting XV from the pre half term squad the start places for next week were up for grabs.

Worthing dominated the collision and the tight exchanges however they showed a lack of accuracy at the breakdown committing a number of offensive penalties which restricted the attacking flow. The first half was punctuated by penalties as both teams came to terms with the referee. At half time the score was 12-6 to Worthing.

Despite the foul weather that would become the feature of the second half Worthing enjoyed great success in the wide channels with Ryan Ball, Chris Claire and Kane Bone each carrying well and a constant threat to the Collyers defence. Jack Roberts and Matt Sercombe continued their outstanding form in the back row and had fine games in both attack and defence. Both players showed great maturity in shifting the tactical focus to combat the conditions and were key to Worthing scoring four unanswered second half tries. The try of the match however was the fine solo effort from Ollie Harcus. For any tight head prop to score from 40m is impressive however any fine outside back would have been proud of the angle of run at the heart of the opposition defensive line.

Collyers 2ndXV 19 Worthing 2ndXV 12

An 18 certificate horror show first half full gore, blood, pain and mistakes. The second half with PG certification had a more comforting narrative with Worthing taking a starting role in comparison to their cameo performance from the first half.

 

Burgess worked well to lead the players and behind the solid kicking game of Keith Worthing mounted several attacks into the opposition half. Endeavour was not getting it done until an excellent individual try from the impressive Cook turned the tide. All the good work to be undone within minutes when the home side scored again after some good interplay.

 

Towards the end of the game Worthing hit their straps and both forwards and backs combined testing the defence and if not for a couple of mistakes from the referee Worthing could have been well in for the win.

 

Wigzell ran well and he along with the front 5 colleagues dominated in the scrum, however Worthing struggled during phase play and struggled to get into the game as the opposition played the official well.

 

Eventually Worthing got a deserved score well taken by Pumfrey in the left hand corner. This was the highlight of a reasonable 2^nd half performance and if the game had continued the visitors may well have taken it out.

 

The front row was again exceptional in the tight, the second row was hard working and the back row did well. The line out was a weakness today and this put pressure on the backs. With ball in had the backs went hard and new combinations were tested, defensively the mid field was strong getting over and past the gain line, the back 3 lacked experience and with players carrying injuries it was never going to be the best day. Having said this Pasmore did run well and Anderson looked industrious, may be with a little more ball some damage could have been done.

 

In summary- too many mistakes, not enough quality first phase ball and poor continuity skills reduced the chance of the win.

 

 

Steyning next week, lets get things back on track.

Worthing college V Coulsdon college
Away at Coulsdon is always a tough test. A very strong, quick & athletic team to face we had to bring our A game!
The game was a tale of 'runs' as both teams sat in 2,3 zone defenses. We out-thought Coulsdon & made the extra pass to beat their pressure! We looked great & found ourselves sitting pretty at halftime ahead 20 points 42-22!
3rd quater we still looked strong & focused cruising along with the lead. I rotated the bench freely & all players that steppped on contributed. But then Coulsdon found their feet & with minutes raining found themselves 4 down! I had to rally the starters & we weathered their 'run' & held out for a 2 skin of our teeth victory! 71-69! Worthing win
No scores as Coulsdon didn't provide score-sheet.

Netball 1 42 Tautons 1 10

There was a real buzz about todays game as the opposition had a reputation of being a quality college for Netball, often reaching the finals of the National Cup. They arrived for an early start on a dry afternoon.

 

A number of the girls recognizing some of their opponents from Regional U19 netball.

 

Amber was playing her first game back since her ankle injury and Hannah Carey reverted back to Defence. I asked the girls to focus and work hard on attack and defence right from the outset. The first 15mins were amazing, we blew Tautons away with our determination and desire to win, the passing was crisp and the work rate 100% - we lead at the end of 15 mins

15-2.    The play continued in a similar vein for the 2^nd quarter with the scoring dropping off slightly and the score at the end of the 2^nd quarter was 24-4.

 

It is hard to maintain the focus when winning easily and things dropped off after half time.  It was easy to understand the frustration of the Tautons coach as the girls had the netball skills to play the game but our want to win therefore we were first to the ball, and battled for everything they did not compete.

 

Changes were made going into the last quarter as the game was won and I wanted to see how players played in different combinations.

 

Final score 42-10 – excellent win

 

Man of the Match – Amelia Stubbs – New defensive partnership with Hannah – 10 goals conceded in 60 mins not bad.

Worthing Rugby 1stXV Regional FE 10s

A strong Worthing side travelled to Dorking RFC for what was to be an eventful day’s play. A lacklustre warm up followed by an indifferent performance and opposition break away try put paid to any chance of competing in the Cup competition come the latter stages of the competition. With plenty of disappointment in the eyes of the players it was clear that not too much needed saying and with that we moved on to the next fixture against Richmond 2s (Rich whaaart? ‘Richmond’). They were as usual abrasive in style and had a number of very dangerous athletes always putting the Worthing side under pressure, however Worthing managed to collect two scores and win comfortably against the Richmond second string side. Hereafter it was on like Donkey Kong, Worthing progressing into the second tier tournament to play Reigate and Esher.

 

The Reigate game was close for a short time then Worthing opened up the field with some excellent rugby scoring tries a plenty working together well as a side offloading well, creating space and finishing when the opportunity arose.

 

The final game against Esher was to be a tough encounter however the best was saved until last with the early Worthing lethargy being vanquished from memory and the sights of Conroy-Smith and Pitchford sprinting down the touch line replacing them.

 

In all a day of what might have been, a better warm up, more responsibility taken or a more direct approach during the opening moments of the day. However one tackle eventually shaped the entire day, if the Canterbury player is brought down a win was possible and that falls on every mans shoulders.

 

 

Lessons learned and better things lay ahead but for today the ‘Established Plate Winners’ title will have to do.

Hallsy's Academy Report - Week 7

Both teams were in cup action this week with the 1st XI taking on South Downs in the ESFA National Cup and the 2nd XI travelling into Mid Sussex for a 2nd round County Cup tie against Thomas Bennett.

The 1st XI went into their tie with South Downs looking to learn from their previous week's reverse at the hands of Mid Kent and the result was an awesome first half display, which saw the hosts 3-0 up at the break.

The game began relatively evenly with both sides looking to play on the hallowed turf that is Worthing United??!! South Downs created the first couple of chances with their centre half just heading over from an outswinging corner being the closest. Shortly after however the home side took the lead. Alex Staines ran onto a short back pass and finished well. 1-0. This goal gave Worthing a huge amount of confidence and the began to pass and move the ball around all areas of the pitch. Worthing quickly doubled the lead when an Ali Giammattei cross found its way to Staines who cheekily flicked the ball over the advancing South Downs goalkeeper. 2-0. The confidence and ability levels were now flowing and chances were coming thick and fast with Sam Mannings, George Dowell, Jordan Clark, Luke Jearum and Staines all having good chances to extend the home sides lead. Thirty minutes had only just passed when Worthing added a third and in hindsight killed the game off. Staines again completed his hat trick with another low excellent finish. 3-0. More chances came with centre half Andy Heward having the best opening, when his free header went wide of the far post. Half time 3-0.

All those watching had certainly had a treat in the first 45 minutes with some of the best football that has been witnessed at the College Academy. However complacency had set in and this affected the second half performance. Even with this Worthing still had numerous chances to extend the lead with Staines, Jack Boxall, another Andy Heward free header and both Sam Mannings and Jordan Clark having great efforts from free kicks all coming close. South Downs also increased their performance levels in the second period and their hard work paid off with 20 minutes to go with their left back attacking the ball at the back post and beating Kieron Gillard in the process. 3-1. Even with their poor second half showing Worthing closed out the game relatively comfortably and will now advance to the 3rd round of the National Cup.

Meanwhile the 2nd XI were continuing their excellent form with an impressive 5-3 victory away at Thomas Bennett in the 2nd round of the County Cup. It again took the lads to fall behind before performing and coming out on top as they were 2-0 down at one point. Special mention must go to striker Paul Jackson, who scored 4 of the goals in this impressive victory. The lads have again showed great character and ability to advance to the next round. Defender Alex Cole rose at the back post to finish the scoring and thus completing a very effective performance.

All in all a great week for the Football Academy, however the lads must continue to take this forward into the rest of the season and if this does happen I'm sure the results will continue to come as they have done in this last half term.

basketball match report 21/10/09

worthing college V haywards heath college

away at haywards heath is always a game to look forward to. a testing game both physically & mentally. we had to be focused to get the result.

first quarter; we won the tip & set the tone for the game. we looked lively & scored at will. great drives from ollie hunt, josh mountifield, ian marshall & tom wyatt made us look good on the offensive end but our defense was slack. we outscored haywards heath 25-10 in the opening 10minutes but 10 points was too many to concede, we needed to step up our D!

second quarter; we rotated the bench & looked for a defensive spark. we again cruised in for easy scores but couldn't get consecutive stops! baskets from matt sharp, ollie hunt & ian marshall effectively put the game away as again we out scored haywards heath. this time 17-10 making the score at the half 42-20

at the half we spoke about locking up on defense. trying to hold haywards heath to less than 10 points in the next quarter!

third quarter; intensity raised & haywards heath found it tougher to get their shots off. again we rotated players off the bench & everybody contributed! tough scores from stuart nayer & ollie hunt ( including a break away 2-handed dunk ) kept the scoreboard ticking over! our defense was better & we held haywards heath to 7 points in the 3rd, scoring 20 points ourselves ballooning the score to 62-27 heading into the final stanza

fourth quarter; the win was in the bag but we needed to stay focused at both ends. we again ran the floor well for more easy scores! again we scored 20 points in the quarter & did a decent job on the other end holding haywards heath to another 10 points! final score 82-37 worthing college win!

Worthing College Netball 2nd Team V Taunton

Worthing College Netball 2^nd Team started their match against Taunton well with a 13 – 0 lead, the passing was going well and the defending and the girls put a nice pace into the game.

In the 2^nd quarter the two Emma’s put in some impressive shooting (15 goals in this quarter) and extended the lead to 28 – 1, the defending was holding and the girls were increasing the pace of the game.  With the court being quite slippery due the huge amount of rain the night before the girls needs to ensure that they landed every pass, which they were doing.

Going into the 3^rd and with some changes on the court, the girls were told not to have a Worthing Wobble as it is known when some of the dynamics of the game changes.  They kept up their impressive performance, defence still holding and the shooting still going strong the girls ended the quarter on 42 – 2.

Last quarter and the main aim was to keep the defence and passing going strong, it almost worked and the defence stayed strong but some of the passing went a bit off and there was quite a few missed passes happening.  The girls did manage to keep the impressive shooting going with another 14 goals in this quarter and the game ended on Worthing winning 56 – 5.
