Hallsy's Weekly Look Around the Academy - 2 down 2 to go...

The focus this week at the Worthing College Sports Performance Programme was at County level with two of the squads representing the College in their respective County Cup Finals. First up were the Netball Performance Programme, who were taking on Hurstpierpoint College. The match was played at Burgess Hill School for Girls, but despite this Worthing took a large following of supporters to hopefully see the squad victorious.

Following success at the Sussex round of National Schools, Worthing were the favourites however a Cup Final is a completely different game as those of us who have been around a while know. Worthing started slowly missing the first three shots with Hurstpierpoint taking their opportunities to take an early 3-0 lead. Worthing struggled to find form throughout the court, nerves getting the better of them against a much improved Hurstpierpoint team. Defensively, as the quarter went on, Worthing improved and with more opportunities to score, the first quarter ended 7-8 down. The message from Performance Programme Coach Tina Price, was to calm down, believe in themselves, work harder at hunting the ball down and hopefully the performance would improve. This was unfortunately not the case in the 2nd quarter, which saw Worthing slip behind by 4 points.

Changes were made at half time to freshen up the approach and hopefully get Worthing back into the final. Emily Begley came on at Goal Shooter and Mele Stubbs at Goal Defense with Mele Jackson moving back to GK. Emily shot brilliantly under pressure and that gradually pulled the defecit back to one goal at the end of the third quarter. A fast and furious match was beginning to take its toll on the Worthing side, which meant further changes. Sarah Uncles replaced the hard working Anna Van Eetvelt at Centre, Vicky Bowles moved to WD and Katy Finlay to WA. Despite fatigue setting in Worthing remained in the game and with a minute to go were still only a point down and with Hurstpierpoint playing a dangerous possession game, Worthing stole back possession and hot shot Begley scored the equaliser, much to the delight of the travelling Worthing supporters.

As the scores were level at the end of normal time, two halves of two minutes were played of extra time with the scores reset. In the first period Worthing managed to take a 2-1 lead, which was the first time they were ahead in the whole final and it was a lead they were not going to relinquish. In the second period Mele Jackson rebounded a Hurstpierpoint shot, which was played safely down court and it was that girl Begley again to seal a 4-1 win in extra time.

Tina Price was ecstatic with the sides attitude "today was a brilliant fightback from the girls and it shows that a game is never lost until the final whistle goes. The girls have been a pleasure to coach this season and have deserved to gain this accolade from all their hard work and efforts. I would also like to thank the travelling support as they really got behind the team and hopefully they gave the girls a lift when they needed it."

With one County Cup success the travelling support moved onto Lancing FC to watch the Men's Football Performance Programme 1st XI, who were taking on Bexhill College in their County Cup. Up to 150 supporters witnessed an entertaining final, where two types of football clashed. Worthing's passing and expansive game came up against Bexhill's physical and direct approach.

The start of the final was a tense affair with both teams surrendering possession all too easily. Once the game settled it was Worthing's passing style that seemed to come to the fore. A direct Joe Warner run down the left led to an excellent pull back to oncoming midfielder Jon Watkins, who blasted over to waste a golden opportunity. It was not long though until Worthing took the lead. All the set piece work in training paid off when Dave O'Callaghan's corner was met by Warner, whose flicked header found Ryan Fergany, who cooly slotted the ball into the top corner. The rest of the half saw Worthing's back line defending extremely well against the set piece threat that Bexhill had with their considerable size, however Worthing were still dangerous up the other end. An O'Callaghan short corner to Toko Moyo was laid back to the midfielder and his strike was excellently tipped over the bar.

The word from coaches Dave Hall & Danny Cullip at half time was to continue to work hard off the ball to keep the teams shape to give them the best possible chance to be victorious. Worthing started the second half brightly and this led to Worthing doubling their lead. A Fergany cross was met by Moyo, who volleyed a pass into Watkins. As he turned the defender and was about to shoot a Bexhill foot prodded the ball into the far corner.

With Worthing in the ascendency it was vital that focus was maintained to make sure the Cup was theirs. However there was still drama to come, when defender Dan Heward handled in the penalty area instinctively, which led to his dismissal. Bexhill thought they were back in this final with 20 minutes to go, however they didn't count on Worthing stopper James Binfield pulling off an excellent diving save to his right to make sure Worthing maintained their clean sheet. Binfield was again called into action, this time a superbly timed tackle on the dangerous Bexhill number 9, a tackle that any centre half would have been proud of.

Worthing re-orginised quickly with Fergany being replaced by holding midfielder Matt Hardman to sure things up in the middle of the park. Even with the one man disadvantage Worthing still looked dangerous in attack. A Dave O'Callaghan free kick was only parried by the goalkeeper, Moyo followed up, but put the ball over the bar, when it seemed easier to score. Worthing did finally get a deserved third. The tireless Joe Warner read a headed back pass, flicked the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper and dived to ensure the result was 3-0 and the County Cup was going the short distance to Worthing.

Performance Programme Coach Dave Hall praised the squads performance "The shape defensively of the team tonight was excellent. This allowed us to frustrate Bexhill and then catch them when we were in possession. Each player did their specific job superbly and it was great to see this team functioning so well and this was especially apparent when we went down to 10 men. From all their hard work in training and games this season I'm so pleased that they now have a piece of silverware to show for their attitude and efforts. I would also like to thank all those that came to watch as I'm sure at times they were the 12th man. Our attention must now be on the 2nd XI County Cup Final as well as securing the ECFA National League title."

So with two County Cups won its now the turn of the Women's and 2nd XI Men's Football squads to look to achieve the improbable. A Worthing College Quadruple!

County Cup Final 1 of 4 - A Good start...

Netball County Cup Final v Hurstpierpoint Wed 14 March 3.30 k/o

A coach took the netball squad, together with supporters from the Rugby Academy and the remaining Netball Academy members to Burgess Hill for an eagerly awaited final againstg Hurstpierpoint.

Following success at the Sussex round of National Schools, Worthing were the favourites however a cup final is a completely different game as those of us who have been around a while know. Worthing started slowly missing the first three shots with Hurst scoring theirs to take an early 3-0 lead. Worthing struggled to find form throughout the court, nerves getting the better of them against a much improved Hurst team. Defensively, as the quarter went on, we improved and with more opportunities to score, the first quarter ended 7-8 down.

The girls were told to calm down, believe in themselves, work harder at hunting the ball down and things would improve.
Unfortunately they didn’t !. Shots were still being missed and the centre court were struggling to feed the circle. Worthing were 4 a drift at half time.

Half time was the time to change things, Emily Begley on at Goal Shooter and Mele Stubbs on at Goal Defence with Mele Jackson moving back to GK. Emily shot brilliantly under pressure and we gradually pulled the defecit back to one goal. Mele J had to deal with some very unpleasant parents from Hurst which needed Brdges and Hall to go and stand behind her goal for support. A role Ben took over for the final quarter.

Fourth quarter still a goal down, further changes made as Anna was exhausted after she had tracked up and down court tirelessly due to the nature of the game. Sarah Uncles to Centre, Vicky Bowles to WD and Katy Finlay to WA. Worthing remained a goal down and with two mins to play Hurst decided to play possession netball – an extremely dangerous tactic as I know from experience. With 30 seconds remaining Worthing Stole possession and Emily Begley scored. Worthings support went wild.
In netball it goes to 2 mins each way extra time then golden goal.

Worthing took the centre and Emily scored, Hurst equalised, Worthing scored again and managed to keep Hurst at bay till 2 mins had passed. 2.-1 Worthing, first time all afternoon Worthing had been in front. Our centre pass and Katie Pearcy scored to give us a 3-1 lead. Hurst battled but a missed shot was rebounded by Mele Jackson, played safely down court for Emily to score 4-1 with 49 seconds to play – first time I relaxed all afternoon.

A brilliant fight back to prove a game is never lost till the final whistle goes.

Girls you have been a pleasure to coach this season and deserve to win the cup.

Supporters – you were brilliant.

Tina

Hallsy's Weekly Look Around the Academy - So close...

Worthing College Men's Football Performance Programme 1st XI reinforced their lead in the ECFA National Premier league after fighting back from 2-1 down to defeat East Berkshire 4-2 at East Preston FC and avenging the ECFA National Cup defeat earlier on in the month. Worthing took the lead through a long range Ryan Fergany effort, but East Berkshire took the lead after two defensive errors to go into the break 2-1 ahead. After a change in personnel and some constructive words, Worthing's response was excellent with the returning Fergany scoring two minutes into the second half to get the game back to all square. A second change saw Toko Moyo come into the fray and his impact was almost instant, as he ran onto a through ball, beat the East Berkshire goalkeeper, only to be brought down by him to concede the penalty. Top scorer Joe Warner stepped up to give Worthing the lead. Moyo again was in the thick of the action and it was his closing down that forced an error from the East Berkshire captain, which led to Moyo being upended for the second time. The result was the same with Warner striking his penalty into the opposite corner from the first to seal the win. Worthing's three points took them 9 points clear and with Kingston losing to AFC Wimbledon, Worthing have now secured at least second spot, which guarantees a National Play off spot, but coach Dave Hall does not want the squad to rest on their laurels "Both squads have been excellent this season, especially with their willingness to learn and develop. This is now the business end of the season where all competitions are up for grabs and the players need to stay focused to hopefully win the league to ensure a home draw in the playoffs, but first and foremost the upcoming County Cup Finals for both squads are the immediate priority."

The Rugby Performance Programme had their second season defining match in as many weeks as they took the long trip to Exeter in the British Colleges' National League Playoff Quarter Finals. Worthing were out the blocks quickly and didn't seem to be affected from the 4 hour road trip as they quickly went into a 15-0 lead. However the home side got themselves back into the game and scored a game defining try, which was converted to edge Worthing out 26-25. Performance Programme Coach Ben Coulson was proud of his players "despite the long journey we started extremely well and the players gave it their all and left everything on the pitch. Its not the first time that the Rugby Programme have been beaten in the final stages of a National Competition over the last three years, so the players just need to dust themselves off and go again, especially as the squad still have the BCS National Cup last 4 against Myerscough, which will again be a test and one that I'm sure they will give their all in."

The Women's Football Performance Programme again had two matches in a week, but this time their week was and extremely positive one scoring 16 goals and only conceding one in the process. Firstly Worthing overcame Priory College, who are linked to Charlton Athletic 5-1. On Friday Worthing had a Sussex Schools league match against Steyning, which gave Performance Programme Coach Mike Bridges the opportunity to play some squad players as well as those coming back from long term injury. Worthing's attitude was excellent and this showed with the 11-0 scoreline. Despite the difference in class coach Bridges thought that it was still a worthwhile work out to ensure that competition for places in high coming into the upcoming County Cup Final against Chichester on March 21st at Worthing FC with a 7.30pm kick off and entry on the night is free.

The Worthing College Sports Performance Programme has an already well updated blog site and Facebook fan page, which keeps all up to date with news, reports and photos from all the Programmes work. It has now launched a YouTube channel where all the footage from match analysis DVD's are online for all to view. To subscribe to this site visit http://www.youtube.com/user/wcacademyofsport?ob=0&feature=results_main or type "Worthing College Sport" into the YouTube search bar.

Hallsy's Weekly Look Around the Academy - Could it be a clean sweep...?

The Worthing College Sports Performance Programme were looking to make it a clean sweep of their squads making County Cup finals this season. With the two Men's Football and Women's 1st XI Football squads already in their respective finals it was the turn of the Netball and Rugby Under 18's programmes to see if they could add to the three finals with Worthing College representation.

The Netball Performance Programme travelled east to take on Mayfield School of St Leonards in their County Cup Semi Final. Despite not firing on all cylinders in the first quarter Worthing still took a 9-4 lead into the second quarter where they extended their lead to 18-9 at half time. Only the defensive work of Mele Jackson and shooting accuracy of Katie Pearcy ensured that this lead was in tact. Changes were made to hopefully improve Worthing's performance with Emily Begley coming on at GS and Katie Finlay at WA. Mayfields also made changes, but fortunately for Worthing the tempo of the game was not altered and with Pearcy continuing her shooting accuracy along with Hannah Pannell and Sarah Uncles stepping up in defence and thus booked Worthing's place in their final with a 39-23 victory. Performance Programme Coach Tina Price was happy with the outcome "In semi finals the result is all important and today we got the result, but all the players know that they will need to perform better in the final if the squad wants to win the tournament that gives you the accolade of best team in the County for this season."

The Rugby Performance Programme were looking to make it five Worthing College squads in County Cup finals when they took on Sussex Downs of Lewes in their under 18's semi final. Unfortunately Worthing started slowly and were quickly 15-0 down. Some readjustments and strong team spirit put Worthing back into the game, but their slow start cost them to eventually go down 22-19. Luke Calleja, Josh Bath and Lewis Maslen touched down with Barney Lyons converting two of the tries. Performance Programme Coach Ben Coulson knows that the players will come back stronger when saying "it was a shame that the team didn't start well, which put them on the back foot straight away and set the precedence. The squad are obviously hurting, but have taken on board this defeat and will look to bounce back straight away in the BCS Under 19's Elite League Playoff last 8 away at Exeter College."

The Women's Football Performance Programme had two BCS Elite League matches this week against the top two teams in the division. First they took on Oaklands College (Arsenal FC) in a match played at Worthing College. Worthing put in a brave performance and competed with their more illustrious opponents for most of the match, but in the end that extra bit of quality showed for Oaklands to come out 4-2 winners. Amy Potkins and Sophie Frost were on target for Worthing. Due to league completion deadlines and the poor weather conditions last month the same squad had to play two days later against Thurstable College (Colchester FC). Worthing again battled hard, but fatigue was definitely their downfall against high quality opponents and were defeated 4-1, with Jade Widdows on the scoresheet. "The squad has been competing all season against high quality opposition in the highest grade in Women's College Football in the Country, so in defeat the players can only learn from their experiences and take this into their future development, which is one of the main areas that we pride ourselves on in our performance programme." coach Mike Bridges said in reflection in what was a tiring week for the Women's Football Programme.

The Men's Football Performance Programme only had one match this week. With the 1st XI having a rest week the 2nd XI took on Chichester College in the BCS Performance League. Both coaches Danny Cullip and Dave Hall had the opportunity to see how the 2nd XI is developing in preparation for their County Cup final. Worthing began well and were looking to play effective football on a compact pitch and took the lead from an Abdoulie Bah mis-hit cross into the top corner. When in command of a game its important to capitalise on chances created, but Worthing were left to rue this and just before half time Chichester equalised after a defensive error. The second half followed the same suit as the first with Worthing dominant and missing chances, whilst Chichester were a threat on the break. In the end the shares were spoiled, but Worthing could see this as a couple of points lost. Nathan Webster starred for Worthing in the middle of midfield, who is coming back from a long injury lay off and is definitely looking to stake a claim for a 1st XI start in the coming weeks.

Over the next couple of weeks Worthing College are in four County Cup finals. If you wish to come along and support your local College sports teams the dates, times & venues are as follows; On Wednesday 14th March the Netball County Cup Final opponents to be announced. Game to be played at Burgess Hill School for Girls with a 2pm tip off. On Wednesday 14th March Men's Football County Cup Final 1st XI against either St Bedes or Bexhill. Game to be played at Lancing FC with a 7.30pm kick off with a £3 entry fee including a match programme. On Wednesday 21st March Men's Football County Cup Final 2nd XI against Thomas Bennett of Crawley. Game to be played at Lancing FC with a 7.30pm kick off with a £3 entry fee including a match programme. On Wednesday 21st March Women's Football County Cup Final against Chichester College. Game to be played at Worthing FC with a 7.30pm kick off, which will be free entry. All players would really appreciate the town's support.

Hallsy's Weekly Look Around the Academy - Big Day for the Programme...

This week saw many of the Worthing College Sports Performance Programmes in make or break matches in their seasons and they came out on top to continue the Colleges' fine season up to now.

The Rugby Performance Programme took on Oaklands College in the Last 8 of the British Colleges' National Cup at Worthing Leisure Centre. Worthing started brightly and took the game to their illustrious opponents and eventually reached an unassailable lead, eventually coming out 32-0 winners. Try scorers on the day were Declan Peake, Adam Fastnedge & Jack Roberts. Barney Lyons kicked the extras. Performance Coach Ben Coulson was extremely pleased with the players efforts and is looking forward to the Semi Final at home to Myerscough College of Preston "The boys were all fantastic today, which they have been all season. They fully deserve this next game against a College, who are heavily linked with Sale Sharks and it will be great to see how far these players have come in their time with us. This is what the Performance Programme is all about, players developing their individual and team intelligence, which can surely only develop against teams such as Myerscough."

The Men's Football Performance Programme were both in their respective County Cup Finals, which is the first time this has happened in the history of Worthing College Football. The 2nd XI took on Hazelwick School's 1st XI in their Semi Final and put in a performance that saw them never behind, being 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1 then 3-2, which was the final score. Worthing's goalscorers were Captain Adam Bardouleau, Matt Hardman and Ryan Hallett. The 2nd XI now play Thomas Bennett of Crawley's 1st XI at Lancing FC on Wednesday 21st March with a 7.30pm KO. This will be the second time that the 2nd XI have reached the final of this competition in three years and will hope for the same outcome from 2010, a 1-0 win over Hazelwick School.

The 1st XI made hard work of their semi final, which was against Sussex Downs of Lewes. In the first half Worthing couldn't really get into their rhythm and this resulted in Worthing going 1 goal down, however this seemed to spur Worthing into action and skipper Joe Warner quickly equalised, by capitalising on a goalkeeping error after a Nathan Webster strike. Worthing then took the lead just before the break with Dave O'Callaghan crossing for Warner to flick past the advancing goalkeeper. Worthing started the second half brightly, but it was Sussex Downs who got themselves back into the game, with a great long range strike. This again got Worthing going and it was Warner who completed his hat trick after taking an O'Callaghan pass in his stride, rounding the keeper and finishing cooly. The tie was put beyond doubt from an O'Callaghan corner, defender Dan Heward flicked on, which was only parried into the patch of Webster for a well deserved goal to make the final score 4-2.

Performance Coach Dave Hall is so proud of the squad when saying "Getting to the final of both competitions is a fantastic achievement and I'm sure that it is something that no College has done before. This shows the strength of the squad that we have here and this is totally down to the hard work, attitude and ability of the players. However getting to a final is one thing and its something that myself and Danny are always saying in training that you may have a really good season up until now, but more work is needed to ensure that there is something to show for the players efforts at the end of a potentially good season for the programme."

Meanwhile the Women's Football Performance Programme took on Filton College at Wick FC in the BCS Elite League. Worthing put in a tremendous team performance to hold the National Champions to a 0-0 draw. The Women's Football Performance Programme are also in their County Cup Final, so this has been a good season for all football programmes with hopes of potential silverware on the way. With this as well as the performances of all the programmes, Sports Performance Programme Co-ordinator Tina Price states "The success of this Wednesday is not just a one off. All players and staff have worked extremely hard to ensure that preparation is as professional as possible so that Worthing College can compete at all levels from National League or Cup through to County Cup's. The Rugby and Netball Programmes are also in County Cup Semi Final action soon, so there could be more Worthing College representation in County Cup finals and along with potential National Rugby and Men's Football accolades, this is something that the College and the whole Worthing area should take note of and be proud of."

Hallsy's Weekly Look Around the Academy - Half Term Special

Worthing College Men's Football Performance Programme missed the chance to travel to Leeds City College in the last 8 of the ECFA Premier National Cup after being narrowly defeated 1-0 against East Berkshire College at East Preston FC last Friday. Worthing College started the brighter with two quick chances coming from set pieces, both times defender Dan Heward found himself with a free header, but couldn't find the net. Wingers Lee Mottershead and Toko Moyo were giving their opposing full backs a hard time with their direct style and it was Moyo, who forced the first save after going through one on one with the goalkeeper, but only a corner was gained. Midway through the half the visitors began to get into their stride, following their late arrival to the ground due to travel issues and it was East Berkshire to score when on top, which was decisive moment in the match. A fluid passing move was finished by East Berkshire's skilful number 8, who beat keeper James Binfield at his near post.

Despite going one down, Worthing began to get back into the game and midfielder Jared Rance miscued his lobbed effort with only the keeper to beat after a great pass from Dave O'Callaghan. Worthing were well in the match despite not being their usual fluid passing selves, with possession too easily given up. With this a change was made with only 35 minutes on the clock. Rance was replaced by Paco Vasquez to sure up the midfield and this seemed to motivate Worthing, who had the best chance of the half to equalise. Moyo again took on his full back and delivered a sublime cross, which was met by Mottershead, but his strike came off the post and just evaded skipper Joe Warner.

At half time the message was to be patient and to make sure that the team shape, which Worthing pride themselves on. Straight from the kick off it seemed as if Worthing wanted to get back in the tie. This time is was Mottershead's cross that eventually reached Moyo, but his shot was well blocked. The standard of football being played was excellent with both teams defending superbly. In a game that was honest and entertaining for the 30 or so supporters who were at the match it took a strange twist with 15 minutes to go. Moyo was withdrawn for Ryan Hallett, whose left footed effort just missed the near post. After an aerial challenge between Lewis Jenkins and three opponents a free kick to Worthing was given and in the melee that followed TWO East Berkshire players were given their marching orders, which bemused all expect for the man that counts, the referee. Worthing could now really take it to their opponents to force extra time, but to their credit East Berkshire defended well and Worthing only created two or three goal mouth scrambles, which were only half chances. With time running out midfielder Shaun Cook went honestly into a tackle, which the referee deemed to be a bookable offence and his second, so he became the third player to leave the field of play. With that came the final whistle and disappointment from the Worthing players. Unfortunately Mottershead's frustration was a little too strong and this resulted in another red card for the referee to put in his report.

Performance Programme Coach Dave Hall was reflective in his summary of the game saying "After looking at the video of the game it was an extremely tight affair, which is what you would expect at this level of football and if you are not at your best the result can go either way. East Berkshire scored when they were on top and fair play to them and we wish them luck for the next round. With regards to the sending offs it wasn't that type of game, but the players need to learn that if on a yellow you can't dive in and if the referee is looking to give out cards don't give him a reason to even if you think he is wrong as its his opinion that counts. After the season we are having at times it maybe good to lose like this, so that the group can refocus and see how hard they have actually worked to get where they are. We have three league games left and a County Cup Semi Final next week so we will take it one game at a time and if the boys continue to put in the effort I'm sure that they will reap the rewards that are still on offer."

This Wednesday sees another big week for the Worthing College Sports Performance Programme with the Rugby 1st XV taking on Oaklands in the BCS National Cup Quarter Finals at Worthing Leisure Centre with a 2pm KO. Both Men's Football Performance Programme sides are in County Cup Semi Final action with the 1st XI playing at Sussex Downs Lewes and the 2nd XI playing at Hazelwick School of Crawley with both finals being played under lights at Lancing FC the squad need to bounce back from Friday's disappointments.

Definitely....

Hallsy's Weekly Look Around the Academy - Well Done Mele!!

Worthing College's Netball Sports Performance Programme player Mele Jackson made her British Colleges' National debut against Northern Ireland Under 21's last week. The match was played at the University of Belfast and with Northern Ireland preparing for the upcoming Under 21 European Championships, the British Colleges' side performed admirably, only losing out by two. However special praise was given to Jackson, who played the whole match at Goal Defence (GD) by Northern Ireland's coach as she was named player of the match. Jackson was excited by her debut "I really enjoyed the whole experience making my debut. The standard was extremely high and I felt that I held my own against older opposition. To receive player of the match is something that I'm extremely proud of and I look forward to the rest of the season both with the British Colleges' and Worthing College programmes." Performance Coach Tina Price was also pleased for Jackson "I'm so proud of Mele and her performance last week. This is a great achievement for Mele and I know that she will take this as an experience that can make her an even better player. These recent national call ups show that the whole Performance Programme is competing at a National level and there are opportunities for players to develop with us and possibly gain national and international honours, which has only happened in five years, since the start of these programmes, which is something that all players and staff, should be proud of and we are all looking forward to an exciting future."

Meanwhile Price's Netball Performance Programme were in Hampshire league action against Itchen College of Southampton. Worthing took across two sides and came away with two excellent wins. The 1st team won 35-29 with Hannah Pannell getting player of the match. The 2nd team an even closer encounter 23-20 with Elli Pennent gaining the individual honour of player of the match.

Due to the freezing conditions the only other fixture to be played was the Women's Football Performance Programme 1st XI, who have now made the final of the Sussex Schools Under 19 County Cup for the FIFTH season in a row after a very convincing 5-1 victory against local rivals BHASVIC. Striker Jade Widdows, Aliss Pidduck, Chloe Debaes, Amy Potkins and Danni Lane were on target for Worthing, who had to change the venue back to Worthing College at the last minute due to the referee deeming usual home ground Wick FC unplayable. Performance Coach Mike Bridges reserved praise for Danni Lane, who was solid at the heart of defence, Darcey James, who took hold of the midfield and Chloe Debaes, who performed well coming off the bench and deserved her goal. This semi final victory now sets up a mouthwatering final against Chichester College, which will take place at Worthing FC on Wednesday 21st March with a 7.30pm kick off.

Despite the weather conditions the Rugby and Football Performance Programme's still put together training sessions, which is one of the main important aspects of the whole Performance Programme. Whilst the Rugby Performance Programme trained in the Worthing Leisure Centre gym with strength and conditioning advisor, Mark Sambrook the Football Performance Programme Coach Dave Hall took the 1st XI squad to the brand new Indoor Football Arena (IFA) at Ford. With their match called off mid morning Hall highlighted the importance of still training. "As part of the Performance Programme as staff we make sure that if matches are called off training sessions still happen, whether it be fitness based, such as spinning or a weights session, or technical/game based. This is so that players do not lose their momentum and gives us the best opportunity to perform when the next set of matches come along. The Ford Indoor Football Arena is an excellent facility and its one that we will look to use more in the future as the 4g surface is excellent and it would allow us to work on technical aspects as well as having short, sharp small sided matches, which keep all players sharp and prepared for the upcoming batch of important games, which will shape our season."

The Men's Football Performance 1st XI match that was cancelled, the ECFA National Cup last 16 tie vs East Berkshire has now been rearranged for this Friday 17th February at East Preston FC with a 12.30pm kick off and will be an entertaining tie, especially with a quarter final place up for grabs.

Hallsy's Weekly Look Around the Academy - Well Done Lucy!!

Despite the freezing weather conditions the Worthing College Sports Performance Programme put in two solid training sessions in preparation for their National fixtures on the Wednesday. However only two matches survived the weather with the Netball Performance Programme and Men’s Football Performance Programme 1st XI beating the frost.

On a bitterly cold Tuesday night at Falmer the Netball Performance Programme reinforced their dominance of the BMW Brighton League with a 55-27 victory against Phoenix. Shooter Katy Finlay and Goalkeeper Hannah Pannell excelled as Worthing were victorious in all quarters to secure the win and maintain their lead at the top of the league.

On Wednesday the Netball Performance Programme travelled to their independent rivals Hurstpierpoint in the County Cup................. This pitted Worthing’s 2nd team against Hurst’s 1st team as both levels are represented in the Netball version of this tournament and therefore the hosts were the favourites. Worthing competed well with Hurst in the 1st quarter and made it difficult for their opponents and only trailed 10-8. Worthing then upped their game even more and took control of the tie to edge ahead 16-14. The lead passed over more than once in the 3rd quarter, but Hurst just edged it 26-25. Worthing’s second string had been immense in their performance for three quarters, however the final quarter was just a little bit too much for Worthing with Hurst running out 33-26 winners. Coach Tina Price was “full of praise and pride for the players involved and the future definitely looks bright, which was reinforced by the kind words of the opposition coach.”

The Men’s Football Performance Programme 1st XI took on Southgate in the ECFA National League looking to reinforce the excellent result in the previous weeks top of the table clash against Kingston. After a long trip Worthing took time to get into their stride, and this affected their ability to keep effective possession and create a number of clear cut chances. Despite this Worthing’s defence stayed firm and limited the opposition to half chances. Into the second half, with the introduction of Shaun Cook, Worthing began to get hold of the ball and create chances, which eventually led to them taking the lead. A Lewis Jenkins cross was volleyed in by Lee Mottershead. The lead was quickly doubled with Joe Warner capitalising on a goalkeeping error to add to his impressive tally this season. This victory has now extended Worthing’s lead at the top of the table to six points with three matches of their league programme remaining.

On Tuesday Worthing College’s Women’s Football Performance Programme member Lucy Somes made her debut for British Colleges against Australia Under 19’s in Birmingham. The British Colleges’ side were eventually beaten 3-0, however this didn’t dampen Somes’ experience. “The whole experience so far has been excellent. Having to sing the national anthem was so surreal. Although we lost the game I felt proud to be a part of the team and I’m looking forward to the remaining matches with the squad.” Performance Programme Coach Mike Bridges reinforced Somes’ call up. “Lucy has been outstanding for us this season as well as her first year with us. She thoroughly deserves this accolade and its one that has been celebrated across the whole performance programme. Its fantastic that players are given the opportunity to represent their country and I hope that this is not the final Worthing College player to put on a British Colleges’ shirt.”

Great work. Keep it up,

Talk with Tina - A week in Netball...

On a bitterly cold night Worthing College went to Brighton to play in the BMW League against Phoenix. We were depleted in numbers due to injury, college work and students work commitments but determined to maintain our unbeaten run. The girls were set a challenge of 60 goals and not to let the opposition get half. The game started well, with Katy Finlay in excellent scoring mood, with excellent feeding from Katie Pearcy, Jodie Beaney and Lizzy Hall. Hannah Pannell continued with her excellent progress as GK and the quarter ended 19 -8.

The opposition made changes at quarter time to try and stop the easy ball into Finlay which worked to some degree but the half time score was 30-13.

Opposition changed again, clarified some rules with the umpires !! however Worthing continued to be the dominant team with the three quarters score 42-20. The girls were reminded of their target but just fell short with the final score 55-27.

We will get to 60 next week girls

Hurst A v Worthing B in the county cup was Wednesday fixture at “Harry Potter's Gaff“ ( coach’s thought on the magnificent setting of the school.) Hurst were the clear favourites as they had finished 2nd to Worthing College at the National Schools tournament at Roedean. The girls were impressed by the swimming pool, indoor sports hall etc etc however we were not overawd and out to give them a good game. The game started very evenly and a neutral would have been hard pressed to know which team was at the Regional Schools Tournament, Emily Begley’s shooting was very accurate and the defensive partnership of Hannah Pannell and Sarah Uncles with the “terrier” Laura Joseph at WD making it very difficult for Hurst. The quarter ended 10-8 to Hurst. The second quarter Worthing took control, forcing Hurst into making errors, Hurst’s coach was in despair and Worthing capitalised ending the quarter with a 2 goal lead 16-14. The girls were told Hurst would come out hard a the start of the third quarter but all we had to do was maintain our discipline, look after the ball and defend every pass. The third quarter was again very tight with Hurst edging it to end the quarter 26-25 in front.

Sadly the fourth quarter was one too many for us, there were some very tired players on the court and Hurst upped their game to take it 33-26.

For me, after the disappointment of the weekend, I could not have been prouder of the girls – they all battled above their weight, worked tirelessly as a team, never blamed the umpire or each other and produced an outstanding performance. The coach at Hurst admitted we had her extremely worried.

Well done girls.

Man of the Match – all 7 of them

Hallsy's Weekly Look Around the Academy - Make or Break...

It was a make or break week for both Worthing Colleges' Men's Football and Rugby sides as they took on top quality opponents in their respective National Leagues. The Rugby Performance Programme took on SEEVIC (Essex) in a double header, which would see the victors progress in the BCS Elite Cup as well as take command on the South East BCS Elite League. Worthing were out for revenge after SEEVIC defeated Worthing in the corresponding fixture back in October and were clearly up for this match in front of a healthy crowd at Worthing Leisure Centre. Worthing ran out 19-8 winners. Kieron Leeming touched down on his return to the side and this was added to by Brad Parker and a catch and drive try from Elliott Luke. The trusted boot of Bart Pegg scored the extras. Performance Programme Coach Ben Coulson was delighted with his players "Upon reflection the boys were superb and showed the correct work ethic, which was combined with their technical abilities. However the boys need to refocus to ensure that this excellent result is not wasted and that we continue at this level of performance for the rest of the season."

Men's Football Coaches Dave Hall and Danny Cullip were in the same frame of mind after an excellent away day result against Kingston College, who have dominated each opponent at their home ground for the last 2 seasons. In this top of the table ECFA National League clash Worthing College 1st XI took at 2-0 lead before half time, with Joe Warner grabbing his 13th goal of the season and Dave O'Callaghan's long range deflected effort. Worthing also spurned many chances to increase their lead and Kingston's goalkeeper was also in fine form, which could have come back to haunt Worthing, especially after Kingston pulled one back, but this was in vein and Worthing ended up 2-1 victors. This now puts Worthing three points clear of Kingston with a game in hand and in addition to this Worthing also have the last 16 of the ECFA National Premier Cup and both 1st and 2nd XI's in their respective County Cup Semi Finals, so there is still plenty to play for during this final three months of the season.

The Women's Football Performance Programme were also in BCS Elite League action against the Chelsea Academy at Chelsea's Cobham training ground. Worthing battled hard and ran their opponents close, but in the end Chelsea were just too strong for their opponents and ended up 2-0 victors. Coach Mike Bridges was still extremely proud of his players and knows that this group of players will learn so much more from this defeat rather than in some of the straight forward victories that this squad has had this season.

Onwards & Upwards,
